Dear friends,

When Capitol Hill Housing was approached by Key Bank to develop 24th and Union in the Central District, we were excited at the opportunity to build affordable housing in an area rapidly losing its affordability. Although development of the site is a few years away, we immediately began engaging community networks to help us understand neighborhood priorities for this important intersection. Economic development, affordable housing and preservation of the area's cultural legacy are priorities that have been reiterated to us often.

We continue to refine a vision for the development that will meet these priorities together with community members and local organizations. Part of the vision will include a meaningful memorial to one of the pioneering African American financial institutions, Liberty Bank, which was located on the site from 1968 to 1988. We are gathering advice from local leaders to understand how best to honor its legacy.

There is a small group of individuals who feel the best way to memorialize Liberty Bank is through the landmark process. Preserving this building would not honor the memory of Liberty Bank and would greatly limit the number of affordable homes for members of the community. The building has been significantly altered from the original construction, architect Mel Streeter's vision for it was never realized, and he designed far more significant structures in his lifetime. If this building is not removed, it will likely remain unfortunately vacant for years to come, in no way honoring the history or culture of the community.

On March 19th the Landmarks Preservation Board is holding its final hearing on 24th and Union. I encourage you to attend and make your voice heard.

Best regards,

24th and Union
Capitol Hill Housing seeks to develop a mixed-use building featuring affordable apartments along with commercial space at 24th and Union in the Central District.

In order to develop the project, the existing building cannot be preserved. CHH recognizes Liberty Bank's historic and cultural significance, which we would honor with an appropriate memorial.

The legislative session is scheduled to end March 13 and the Housing Trust Fund needs support.

The Housing Trust Fund makes it possible for so many Washington residents to have affordable homes, and deeper investment is needed.
