Dear Friends,

2013. Done. It's a wrap. It was a good year. A fact we gauge in part by how well we advanced our 7 strategic initiatives. Three of our initiatives are about strengthening the operations of the organization and our balance sheet. One example of success was the creation of property action plans based on a portfolio-wide analysis that considers the financial success of our properties in conjunction with each property's mission fit. We also completed an agency-wide risk analysis to better equip us for avoiding hidden icebergs.

Three of our initiatives focus our real estate and community development activities. Beginning construction on 12 Ave Arts, partnering with market-rate developers on some big projects, and hiring a director for our EcoDistrict work exemplify our success in this arena. The final initiative is the $4.6 million capital campaign for 12 Ave Arts, which we wrapped up in October. Wow!

What's ahead in 2014? We still have some activity on our current plan with a focus on staff development. And we're moving home. With the completion of 12 Ave Arts scheduled for fall 2014, we will be back on Capitol Hill in October. I think 2014 will be a good year too.

If you want to learn more about our accomplishments and vision for the future, mark your calendar for February 10th - our annual meeting of the Board, open to the community.

On a sad note, we lost a dear friend and staff member of CHH last year. Rosemary Allen passed away unexpectedly just before Christmas, surrounded by her loved ones. She was a great person, a great friend and a great accountant. We miss her dearly.

Best wishes to you in 2014,

In Memory

Rosemary Allen, our co-worker and friend, passed away at the end of 2013.

Rosemary came to work for CHH in 2009 as a property accountant. She was a strong and vibrant presence in our organization during her several years here. Beyond her role in accounting, she mentored younger staff, often volunteered at events, and provided wise counsel.

Outside of CHH, Rosemary was a renowned knitter, dancer, pie baker, gardener, hiker and advocate for peace. She shared her life experiences and knowledge with many of our staff. We remember her fondly for her spirit, good humor, honesty, and love for the planet and for people.
