Hi-Desert Nature Museum

This exhibit celebrates traditional California Indian food sources. It showcases the extensive and sophisticated system of environmental knowledge underlying the use of food resources.
It examines contemporary issues of food localization, sustainability, nutrition and environmental health through an alternative, older lens.
Brown Bag Lunch Lecture 
January 8 - noon  
The lecture covers the 150th birthday of the State of Nevada, being celebrated during 2014 throughout Nevada.  The lecture includes ancient and modern history, some geology, biology and botany, and information about some of Nevada's leading and infamous residents through history.

 

Bring your lunch, bring your friends, or just bring yourself to our Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series once a month.  Speakers will present topics of special interest for high desert residents. The lectures start at 12:00 p.m. Admission is  $ 5 - Free for Members -  beverages will be served.

Kid EdVentures
Be a Painter 
Saturday, January 17 - 10:00 a.m. - Noon
 

In this month's session, children will be introduced to art of painting. Painting is a mode of creative expression, and its forms are numerous.  During this session of Kid EdVentures, participants will learn how to paint desert landscapes under the instruction of the amazingly talented artist, Michael Summers, who has featured art at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum, as well as throughout the Morongo Basin.

 

Participants must be at least seven years old.  Call the museum at (760) 369-7212 before Friday, January 16 to reserve your child's spot. There is no cost for this educational experience. However, this class will be limited to fifteen participants.

"Joshua Trees: History and Myths"
Chris Clarke, natural history writer, environmental journalist for KCET and blogger is writing a book on Yucca brevifolia, the namesake of the National Park and the village of Joshua Tree.
Starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum in Yucca Valley.

The Hi-Desert Nature Museum is located in the Yucca Valley Community Center Complex at 57116 Twentynine Palms Highway. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free, donations support the educational mission of the museum. The Hi-Desert Nature Museum is operated by the Town of Yucca Valley.
