President's Message

By Eric Coates
President, PACT

Similar to the frenzy in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and pretty much every where else in Canada, Ottawa's condominium scene is terrifying. As the old neighborhoods disappear faster than spring rolls from the opening night buffet, I wonder how much longer I will enjoy my view of Parliament Hill before it is obscured by the legions of condominia creeping ever skyward.

A New EDs Orientation - Going by the Numbers

By Sara Meurling
Executive Director, PACT

Gideon Arthurs recently commented on the length of his tenure as the new Executive Director at the National Theatre School, counting 118 days. If, like Gideon, I count my time at PACT in days, I am on day 95 (unless I exclude weekends, but who does that in theatre?).

There are over 700 people working at PACT member companies throughout our country and while some know each other from theatre school or past work, there are still many members of our community whom we would like to get to know better. That's why PACT brings you profiles of some of the many outstanding individuals who help make great theatre across Canada.

Name: Natasha MacLellan

How we know her: Natasha is Artistic Producer of Ship's Company Theatre in Parrsboro. Natasha was also named the Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award protg in 2007, the award's inaugural year.

LEANARTS Program Announces Selected Teams

Ten teams from across the performing arts disciplines have been chosen to participate in LEANARTS, the experimental pilot program designed to support promising performing arts initiatives in Toronto by introducing them to the tools and methodologies used by technology startups. The teams are: Associated Designers of Canada, Music in the Barns, FIXT POINT, Kaeja d'Dance, Liederwolfe, Loose TEA Music Theatre, Pat the Dog Theatre Creation, Pocket Concerts, The Ton Beau String Quartet, and Weld Art Collective. Congratulations to the selected teams and thanks to all who applied.

Over a period of five weeks in January-February 2015, the ten teams will be engaged in a process of "ideation", drawn from Steve Blank's approach to customer discovery and Alex Osterwalder's Value Proposition Canvas. They will learn to prototype on a small scale, market test through face-to-face interactions, and gain validated feedback that will allow them to build more engaging programs and solutions with higher probability of success.

LEANARTS culminates in Demo Night, February 13, 2015 where the teams will pitch their projects and talk about what they've learned at an event attended by funders, media and partner organizations.

LEANARTS is delivered in partnership with the Performing Arts Alliance (of which PACT is a member), The Working Group and MaRS with funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.
