A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Guardians, I hope you and your family had a relaxing Spring Break and that adventures were had. It was good to see so many of you at the Sweet 16 party (and huge thanks to Deb Roney and her remarkable and expansive team for putting together such a fun evening).
This is always an exciting and invigorating time in the life cycle of a school: spring music concerts abound, spring athletics are in full-swing, students are spreading their minds through our Global Connections program, seniors are making final decisions about colleges and graduation is nearing, plans for summer are being made, and on and on. It is so good to have so much vibrancy on campus. A few notes:
-Programming. We are commencing our programming season, during which students and parents select courses for the 2016-2017 academic year. We are very excited about the depth and breadth of course offerings into which students can immerse themselves; a wonderful range of Honors, Advanced Placement, STEM, and Humanities opportunities will be available. Students have many opportunities in coming weeks to learn more about course options, content, and expectations as faculty will talk about the options in students' current courses. We have also put together a range of enrichments and departments will also present information about specific courses. Of course, students are always welcome to talk to any faculty member to gather more information about courses. The goal is to give students multiple opportunities to learn about courses so that they can make informed decisions. -Potential Strike. As you know, there is potential for a strike in mid-May. If that becomes a reality, we will certainly communicate with parents and students, but here are a few notes if a strike does come to fruition:
--No one knows how long a strike may last, so grades will be input by faculty by close of business on May 11 and if a strike persists, there is the possibility that central office will cancel final exams and those grades entered on May 11 might serve as the final, semester grades. Thus, as always, please help your child stay active and current with assignments so that there are no outstanding assignments by that date. If your student has any outstanding assignments, projects, quizzes, tests, etc., please have them be in contact with their teacher in very short order to schedule time to get them submitted. --The date and time of graduation will remain the same (Jun. 13 at 4PM) Of course, as matters become more clear, I will keep you posted. I do hope this finds you well! Go Grizzlies!

Coming Together For Jonathan
Jonathan Annicks, a senior here at Payton, is a varsity runner and is well known in Payton's media/journalism community. He is a bright young man whose presence has always guaranteed to make others smile. He has always been a hard working student, not letting anything get in the way of his dreams. On Apr. 10, Jonathan stepped out from his home to retrieve a phone charger from the family car and, without reason, warning or provocation, he was shot by an unknown man and he is now paralyzed from the chest down. Jonathan is known to his friends and fellow Grizzlies as an adventurous, physically active guy who loves the Blackhawks (he coached youth hockey), loves school, and spends endless hours in the journalism lab, working with Ms. Mowery. Jonathan's plans to begin college in the fall and study broadcast communications are now on hold as he focuses on his recovery and adapts to a new reality. Jonathan has shown his inherent optimism, grace, and love of life by responding with positivity, hope, and smiling assurances that he will prevail.
His friends and the community are working to support Jonathan, and insure he has everything he and his family need to face this unimaginable challenge, and so Friends of Jonathan Annicks was launched. It is an online crowd-sourced medical fund the goal of which is to secure donations towards Jonathan's needs, including continuing medical care, physiotherapy, rehabilitative therapy, medical equipment, and other necessities for maximal recovery, self-sufficiency and independence.
Please consider participating in the Payton community's effort to help Jonathan in this time of need, and support him as he moves forward. Visit Friends of Jonathan Annicks to make a donation. Thank you.

SEMINARS AND ENRICHMENTS
Under Pressure
Dr. Erica Bauer, Director of Student Engagement
"Pressure pushing down on me, pushing down on you,..." ~ Queen
I cannot believe we are in the final stretch. As you may have noticed, many of our Grizzlies are working overtime on large projects, ACT Prep/Testing, and Advanced Placement Exams. This is a stressful time of year for many students who may feel under pressure. It is important to encourage students to ask for help, take breaks, and take advantage of the supports available throughout the school day. Below is a brief recap of the supports available to students at Payton.
Enrichments take place the last 50 mintues of each day, excluding Seminar days. Students have the freedom to sign up for enrichment periods based on academic need, club membership, personal interests, or athletic practices. Students in need of additional academic support can sign up for tutoring, homework club, quiet study time, and organizational support. If your student is finding a certain course challenging, please encourage him/her to sign up for an academic enrichment to receive additional support.
There also are a number of social emotional enrichments where students can engage in stress-relieving activities like jogging, gaming, meditation, and dancing, to name a few.
National Honors Society Tutoring is provided by members of the National Honors Society in strong academic standing. Students interested in a tutor can request one by clicking here. Students also can see their counselor for help with acquiring an NHS Tutor.
School counselors are available to students for social emotional support. Each student can set a lunch appointment with his/her counselor simply to talk. Our counselors are available for students to process their feelings regarding their workload, stressors, pressure, etc. Sometimes students just need a safe place to process and our counselors provide that space each and everyday. The Counseling Department can also refer students to additional school-based resources when necessary.
This is a stressful time of year for many, and we want to be sure that we are providing adequate supports for our students. If you have any questions or concerns regarding what we offer, how to access it, and what to do if your student is not taking advantage of these opportunities, please feel welcome to email me - Dr.Erica Bauer.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
International Travel News and Events
Come to International Night, Thurs. May 26 from 5-8:30PM.
I-Night is a celebration of Payton's diversity and world cultures, and it is a fundraiser for student international travel. I-Night features a feast of foods from around the world, a showcase of student performances, and activities highlighting the many cultures present at Payton. I-Night is organized by Payton's International Club and the World Language Department but we could not do it without parent volunteers. Click here to volunteer at I-Night 2016!
¡Vive la aventura! In Apr., Payton visited its sister-school, Belgrano Day School, in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the cultural exchange of a lifetime. With visits to the Tigre delta region, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano, a hop-on, hop-off city bus tour, a "quinceañera" fiesta, a Tango show and dance classes, and much more, this group lived it hasta lo máximo! Click here to follow the Argentina Spanish exchange.
Global Navigator Scholarship Recipients. Twenty Payton students will participate in study abroad programs this summer with the Center for International Education Exchange (CIEE), a nonprofit leader in international education exchange. This is twice the number of students and scholarships who participated last year. Collectively, these students received $77,800 in scholarship dollars, dramatically offsetting the cost of travel, and nearly eliminating it for some. In addition, Tulane University has agreed to grant college credit for these CIEE summer language and culture programs! Students pay CIEE a $100 fee, which is then sent to Tulane to evaluate the student's work at the end of the course. Students who do passing work get 4 credit hours and receive a Tulane University transcript, which they can take with them when they enroll in college.
Students will be spending close to one month abroad immersed in the culture, language, and histories of the following destinations:
Children's Rights and Education in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: Miaoyi Gong (JR)
Chinese Language and Culture in Nanjing, China: Juniors Xin Mei and Benjamin Mintz; Nicholas Timms
Education for Environmental Action in Beijing, China: Lucy Mangalapalli (soph)
French Language and Culture in Toulouse France: Juniors Rebecca Eng and Natalie Murdock; Sophomores Clara Drimmer and Christopher Ferguson
Global Entrepreneurship in Berlin, Germany: Nina Tansey (soph)
Global Entrepreneurship in Dublin, Ireland: Lily Zavala (JR)
Japanese Language and Pop Culture in Tokyo, Japan: Zuriel Trejo (JR)
Marine Ecology in Kralendijk, Bonaire: McClaran Shirley (soph)
Spanish Language and Culture in Madrid, Spain: Michael O'Sullivan (SR); juniors Tiffany Siu, Janko Stojadinovic, and Danny Zamudio; Catherine Johnson (soph); Yocelin Santana (frosh)
Youth Development in Santiago, Dominican Republic: Abygayle Rivera (JR)
Payton Students Start Johannesburg/Chicago Youth Fundraiser: Payton seniors Ella Berry and Alexandra Pollock have launched a fundraiser, a culmination of the independent research they have done on the systemic issues that plague communities in Johannesburg and Chicago, following their trip to South Africa with school last Feb. Through their project, they hope to help community organizations in both countries address their self-assessed needs. The project is in association with Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) and Chicago Youth Centers--Bronzeville (CYC), youth organizations that strive to improve the lives of children who lack many of the resources Payton students have. The students are asking any Payton families with the means to do so to consider donating a small amount of money to the project, which will fund the KYP and CYC youth programs. Your money will go to the improvement of academic and extracurricular resources that serve more than one thousand children. The fundraising goal is $2000, half of which will go to each organization. More information is available on the fundraiser website.

Thanks for Making the Sweet 16 Celebration a Success!
This year's sold-out event, at the Chicago Sports Museum at Water Tower Place, was a great evening packed with socializing, games, and fundraising for our remarkable school, which opened its doors only 16 years ago. Who knew then what a powerhouse of learning we would become?
Special thanks to the many Payton staff and faculty who attended, we loved having you as our guests. Thanks also to the nearly 50 parent sponsors, and to the fabulous student performers (Poms, Pieces of Perfection, and Sounds of Sweetness), who dazzled everyone with their talents.
If you have yet to collect your winning certificate(s) from the event, please contact Deborah Roney to arrange pick-up. Click here to view/purchase photos with "Mike Ditka".
See you next year!

PAYTON TEAMS AND ATHLETICS
Grizzly Team Updates
Chess: Kudos to this year's team. In addition to its overall 27th finish at the IHSA State Tournament, the team finished third in the state after the tie-breaks in Division 2A (based on the size of the school). Congratulations to the entire team for a season of unprecedented success and good times, and to this year's team captains Asher Borstein (JR), Emory Brigden (SR), Ian Kidwell (SR), and Michael May (SR) for their leadership and individual contributions. Other notable season achievements include Tiffany Siu's (JR) participation in the All-Girls National Chess Competition, and Alex Ding's (soph) finish in a four way tie for first place among sophomores in the invite-only MVP tournament.
Debate: Payton's novice debaters had a great showing at citywide finals. Freshmen Chloe Wilson and Mason Wicklander finished preliminary rounds with a 4-1 record and cleared to finals, with Wilson also earning 7th speaker. Alice Cao (frosh) won 2nd speaker. In varsity competition, seniors Lenny Brahin and Luisa Cusick finished preliminary rounds with a 5-0 record and cleared to octafinals. Brahin won 5th speaker and Cusick won 8th. Sophomores Laura Pickert and Aidan Williams inished preliminary rounds with a 3-2 record and cleared to octafinals. Pickert won 20th speaker.
Brahin and Micah Weese (SO) teamed up for the National Association of Urban Debate League tournament, finishing preliminary rounds with a 4-2 record and clearing to quarters. Brahin won top speaker and Weese won 13th speaker. In addition, Brahin won a trip to California to compete for a $40,000 college scholarship.
Boys Tennis: The varsity team welcomes its new Coach Billy Gardner, a former Michigan State doubles player! After several weeks of early morning indoor practices, the team came in second place at the York Quad Tournament on Mar. 30, in its first official match of the season. In regular conference play, the team swept Lane Tech but lost to Northside and Whitney Young. Team captains Alex Ernst (SR) and Jack Mellske (SR) hope to lead the team to victory against Morgan Park, Jones, and Lincoln Park in upcoming match play. Good luck, Tennis Grizzlies!
Baseball: Varsity baseball has battled to a 6-9 record despite struggling to field its full roster due to spring break and other school-related trips during much of the season. They are excited to enter May with the full squad. Freshman Benji Brokemond took advantage of the opportunity and earned a key role in the varsity lineup based on stellar play. Season highlights include a tense 9-7 victory over Jones, and a big 14-4 win over Amundsen. Key games are coming up against several conference rivals as the team seeks to finish strong and enter the playoffs with momentum.
The JV has been limited to 6 games due to weather and opponents' no-shows, but the season so far has been highlighted by a dominant 13-2 win over Northside Prep.
Sailing: On Mar. 22, with the water still cold and flurries in the air, 12 Payton sailors started their spring sailing season. They trained hard and within a few weeks had finished 2nd and 3rd in two qualifying regattas. They will move on to their regional qualifying regattas in Detroit and Lake Forest in early May and compete for a slot at the National regattas. If your son or daughter has an interest in being on the sailing team, they should contact one of the team captains Becca Rose (JR) or Gloria Kevliciute (JR). In addition, the summer sailing program at Chicago Yacht Club is a great way to learn more about the sport and prepare for the team. Visit the CYC website for more information.
Ultimate Frisbee: The Ultimate girls team is off to a great start and is even starting to get national attention! The following is an excerpt from Ultiworld, a national Ultimate Frisbee association magazine:
"Walter Payton Is Scrappy And It's Amazing
Walter Payton may have been my favorite team to watch this weekend. This program comes from Walter Payton College Prep in downtown Chicago and is notable because they don't have a boys team. Just the girls. And these girls were so fun to watch. While their play style wasn't polished, the hard work and skills were evident. The Grizzlies began their day by upsetting Edina Ultimate 8-6. Opponents consistently underestimated this team and they were consistently full of surprises. On a team that excelled through energy and grit [soph] Vanessa Tran stood out for her skill."
Girls Track: The team took second place with 95 points at the South Shore Invitational. Dharma Seda-Gonzalez took second place in the 800m, and Claire Goldman (JR) won first place in the 1600m. Katelyn Hutchison (JR) for placed third in the 100m dash and first in the 200m dash. Molly Crotteau (JR) and Goldman took first and second place respectively in the 3200m. Zuiri Guo (SR) took second place in triple jump. Congratulations Grizzlies!
Letter Day: Come to Varsity Letter Day on May 25 at 1PM in the Atrium. Students and faculty will celebrate Grizzly participants on interscholastic athletic and academic teams at the varsity level. Coaches will introduce their teams, describe their 2015-16 seasons, and distribute Payton varsity letters. The letter is recognition and a symbol of the dedication, effort, and achievement necessary to successfully balance academics with their extra-curricular activities. Refreshments will follow the event. Pizza and refreshments will be served following the event.

Host an AFS International Exchange Student
Host Diego from Chile. He is upbeat with a great sense of humor, athletic and likes all sports but his favorite is soccer. Or host Kaiyuan from China. He is optimistic, cheerful and smart. He loves cycling, playing chess and is an animal lover. Or host Helen from Germany. She is reliable, studious and funny. She plays the piano, writes songs and also plays volleyball. There are many more great students coming for the 2016/17 academic year.
Hosting a student will:
-Enrich your family by sharing your daily lives with a young person from another culture and country.
-Offer your children a better understanding of the world.
-Highlight Chicago to an outstanding young person from another country.
As a host family, you will open your home and heart to a student who will become a member of your family. Families host for a semester or for a full academic year.
Students arrive with their own spending money and excellent medical coverage, and they look forward to participating as active members of their host families, schools and communities. There is no typical host family. Couples, with or without children (any ages), single parents, or single adults - all are welcome to open their hearts and homes to a student. Please consider welcoming an AFS student into your home.

NEXT MEETING MAY 11
Local School Council (LSC) Update
At the Apr. 13 meeting of the Local School Council, Principal Devine provided updates and the LSC discussed the following matters: -33 juniors are National Merit Semi-Finalists (top 50,000 scores in the country). -The administration is now working with the incoming freshmen, another high achieving group of students. This class's rank score cutoff was 896.
-Dr. Bauer has been leading professional development around power, perception, prejudice, and pedagogy.
-The Instructional Leadership Team has been working hard since the Beyond Measure film screening and discussion, exploring where WPCP should go based on the feedback. The results will be integrated in CIWP. ILT is working on something broader than problem-based learning.
-Mr. Devine met with Ron DeNord (new CPS CFO) who said schools will have next year's budgets in May. CPS expects a $1B shortfall. Another pension payment is due on Jun. 30. Legislation has been proposed in Springfield (SB 231) that would rewrite the Illinois educational funding formula. -Student programming will launch for two weeks the week of 4/25. Enrichments to learn about options will be held. Then students can register for classes. -Following discussion, the LSC voted to approve a resolution defining the scope of activities for each of the independent groups engaged in fundraising for the benefit of Payton. These groups are Friends of Payton, Payton Boosters Association, and PIE. In addition to delineating the scope of activities, the LSC resolution formalizes a process for the groups to coordinate their activities, beginning with participation in the Aug. LSC meeting. At that time each group will present its fundraising plan for the year. In the event issues arise, the LSC will mediate between the groups to insure the best outcome for Payton students and programs. The next LSC meeting is on May 11 at 6PM in the Payton Library. All meetings are open to the public. Please join us!
