A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Fostering Healthy Student Growth
Dear Grizzlies,
High school is a dynamic time of life. Our students engage in notable academic growth and they go through many social and emotional (and physical) transformations as well. It is a time when students seek their identities, define and re-define relationships with their close friends, family, and communities. These processes can be exciting, piqued, and life-affirming. At the same time, these growth processes can and do pepper students with self-doubt, more questions than answers, feelings of isolation, and trepidation.
Our students at Payton are beyond their peer group on most academic scales, but from a social and emotional standpoint, they are still adolescents who are trying to find themselves and their place in the world. To aid in those social and emotional growth processes, we have many, many terrific people doing thoughtful work to aid students with this during Advisories, academic classes, enrichments, seminars, one-on-one and group discussions of various formats and purposes. Our goal is to have many opportunities for students to investigate and craft their social and emotional selves, and we are fortunate to have many adults on campus committed to and skillful with this work.
Our new team member, Dr. Erica Bauer, is charged with coordinating this work. Particularly, Erica is working with our various persons to ensure that we have many safety nets under our students who are showing signs of academic, social, and/or emotional struggle. This work will primarily occur as she coordinates our S^3 program (Supporting Struggling Students), which we launched two years ago and we seek to enhance under Erica and other's leadership. Erica will also work closely with our faculty, counselors, special education teachers, parents, etc. to help students find ways to better understand/identify themselves (as high school tends to be a time of great personal exploration and identity formation) and to help students negotiate the interplay between their developing identities and the societies around them. Exciting work is ahead! Erica is fantastic; our community got instantly better with her arrival, and great things are in the offing. Her fingerprints will be all over the school.
Our wonderful students are adolescents, and they come with the combined excitement and frailties of being such. There are times of great euphoria and times of stress and struggle. You are, of course, welcome/encouraged to reach out to your child's teacher, counselor, special education teacher, Advisor, an administrator if you are finding areas of struggle with your child and we can assist with determining the path forward.
Go Grizzlies!

NEW PAYTON FACULTY
Science: Ms. Kathie Ang
Payton Prep welcomes new AP Biology and Biotechnology teacher Ms. Kathie Ang. Ms. Ang has always had a passion for teaching, from teaching swim lessons to teaching High School, she says, "I love to see the progression of knowledge in a student".
A native of New Jersey, Ms. Ang came to Chicago to attend college at the University of Chicago. She graduated with a BA in Biological Sciences and a specialization in Neuroscience. She went on to obtain a MAT in Secondary Education from the University of Chicago's Urban Teacher Education Program - where she was a classmate of fellow Payton teachers, Mr Srivastava (Science) and Ms. Heiberger (Math). While at University of Chicago she was a member of the swim team and competed in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke and butterfly.
Ms. Ang was previously on staff at Kenwood Academy, where she taught AP Biology, 9th grade biology, and coached the swim teams. She will coach Payton's swim teams and hold swim team enrichments as well. Ms. Ang will also conduct the seminar: Kids Advisory Board Program, a group focused on improving children's healthcare. The seminar is sponsored by the Clinical and Translational Research Program at Lurie Children's Hospital. In this two-phase seminar, medical staff from Children's will come in and talk about their current research and then seminar students will participate in a community based medical research project.
Outside of school, Ms. Ang enjoys swimming, running, and biking - she completed her first triathlon this past summer - as well as practicing yoga, watching football and baseball, and just enjoying the outdoors. Being from New Jersey she is a huge Jets and Mets fan. Please give a warm Grizzly welcome to Ms. Ang!

GRIZZLY SPORTS NEWS
Welcome New Athletic Director: Head Football Coach Mr. George Klupchak
Payton is excited to announce the appointment of a new Athletic Director (AD), Mr. George Klupchak. Coach Klupchak was named AD in early Sept. after joining the Grizzlies as Head Football Coach in the spring. Former AD Ms. Bertoni-Mancine will remain an important part of the faculty, overseeing Health and Physical Education. Coach Klupchak was a three sport athlete at Naperville Central High School and focused on football at Hope College, where he played running back and majored in History, Political Science, and Religion. He received a Masters in Education from the University of Notre Dame, where he was a Teaching Fellow in the Alliance For Catholic Education program. He spent three years teaching History and U.S. Govt. while coaching football and basketball in the Phoenix area before coming back to Chicago to teach English and Physical Education at Chicago Bulls Chicago Prep. He was an Assistant Football Coach for two years before becoming the Bulls' Head Coach for another two years before coming to Payton. As AD, Coach Klupchak has responsibility for overseeing the more than 25 sports teams in the Payton program. He will review and approve budgets, and liaison with team fundraising, Booster Club, and FOP to communicate financial needs. He is also responsible for hiring coaches and securing the resources they need, formalizing schedules, and ensuring team transportation and game officials are properly organized. In the immediate term, Coach Klupchak is focused on getting his bearings as the new AS, and insuring that policies and expectations are clearly defined and communicated. He hopes to modernize the administrative tasks that must be completed by teams each season, improving efficiency so that coaches can focus on coaching. In the long run, he seeks to create an Athletic Department with the reputation and culture to match Payton's academic stature. Asked about his philosophy, Coach Klupchak said, "Athletics are a critical part of any great education. I want to create a culture of high levels of competition both within our school and against other schools." He related a story about his high school football tryouts: he was initially listed as 6th string tight end, and he used that potential letdown as motivation to become a starter, and to eventually become enough to play college football. He sees that character and desire in the Payton student-athletes. "I see that they want to be better, that they are willing to do what it takes. There is a history of success here and I just want to do all I can to just keep improving it."

Your FOP Donations at Work: Teacher Wishlist
Thank you to all who donated to the Teacher Wish List during Curriculum Night. The Wish List is an important component of the Friends of Payton (FOP) fundraising effort. It provides an opportunity for donors to contribute to specific Payton departments or needs. Over $30,000 was contributed to fund Wish List items last year- ranging from a single copy of a novel needed by the English Dept., to lab equipment for AP Science programs.
Last fall, the Math Dept. received Wish List funding for a 3D printer. The MakerBot 3D printer is used in the 3D Modeling and Printing Seminar, and approximately 50 students worked with the 3D printer during the seminar last year, another 50 are expected to use it in the seminar this year. The students work with SketchUp software to generate 3D models with the 3D printer. Mr. Scott Galson (Math) explains that the goal is to acquire enough 3D printers so Payton can integrate 3D modeling into the Geometry and/or Physics curriculum and explore engineering applications for the printer. The 3D printer can take four to five hours to produce a single project so more printers are needed to expand program uses. The Math Department hopes to obtain another MakerBot printer through the Teacher Wish List this year.
The Teacher Wish List table will be open at Report Card Pickup and the Annual Gala. And Payton supporters can now access the Wish List online. FOP is thrilled to have the Wish List online and is looking for volunteers to help to improve the website experience. Please contact Katie Fairbank if you have any questions about the Wish List or can offer some assistance with the website.

Payton's Hollis Baker (JR), Jennie Liang (frosh), Claire Seymour (SR), Kate Byrne-Slepicka (SR), and Elise Wagner (JR) play on the junior varsity team. They were set to play Lindblom (varsity) and Whitney Young (JV) on Sept. 26. The team's hoping for an 8th City Championship title on Oct. 4 at Indian Boundary before heading to the IHSA Regional Championship on Oct. 7 at Cog Hill. Having graduated 6 seniors last year, it is a relatively young team this year but, under the leadership of senior team captains Laura Goralka and Simone Miklosi, the team has gone 3-0 in conference play and has a 4-0 record overall, including a special win over U-High -- the first win against the Lab School in the team's last three attempts. Go Grizzlies! Girls Volleyball: The varsity Volleyball team clinched its 3rd conference championship in four years on Sept. 22 by defeating Lane Tech 25-11, 25-20. The Grizzlies are 13-8 for the year.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT UPDATE
Freshman Class Officers: Election on Oct. 14
Reported with the help of Hubert Mysliwiec, VP of Student Government
Payton's annual homecoming was a great success, but no less could be expected given the hard work of the entire Student Government. The Masquerade-themed dance marked the end of this Spirit Week, which included Pajama Day Monday; Twin Day Tuesday; "Guess Who" Wednesday, Class Color Day Thursday, and Spirit Day Friday. The week culminated in a fantastic pep rally during enrichment on Friday. Many thanks to all the parents who volunteered during Homecoming and helped make it safe and fun for the 500+ students in attendance. Student Government has now turned its attention to the election of freshman class officers during Advisory on Oct. 14.

NEXT MEETING OCT. 14
Local School Council (LSC) Update
At the Local School Council meeting on Sept. 16, Mr. Devine reported on the new faculty members joining Payton this year. He also announced that:
-Payton has 9 National Merit Semi-finalists; -Construction of the new building is on time and on budget. Bricks are being applied, and the opening is tentatively expected to be in Feb. of 2016; -Funding and contractors have been approved for construction of the faculty parking area. It is expected to be completed later this fall. -With Mr. Devine's encouragement, CPS discovered that it spent $2.8 million on food for events it hosted last year. CPS has instituted a new policy and will no longer provide food to CPS employees attending events lasting four hours or less, and spending limits have been enacted for longer events.
Finally, Mr. Devine was chosen as one of 7 CPS high school school principals to enter the inaugural CPS Independent Schools Principal (ISP) program. On the basis of his record as an experienced and high-performing principal, Mr. Devine is "exempt from network oversight and evaluation by network chiefs, and granted greater flexibility with regard to professional learning content, budgeting and purchasing for their schools." Congratulations, Mr. Devine!
The next LSC meeting is on Oct. 14 at 6PM in the Payton Library. All meetings are open to the public. Please join us!
