Parents, guardians, and the public are welcome at Local School Council (LSC) meetings, which are held monthly in the Payton Library at 6PM.

The LSC is an elected body that has three main responsibilities: School Budget, Continuous Improvement Work Plan (formerly SIPAAA), and Principal Evaluation, Retention and Selection.

All are welcome to attend and to make comments during the "Public Comments" portion of the meeting.

For more on the LSC, including a schedule of upcoming meetings, minutes of previous meetings, and a roster of members, please visit the LSC page of the Payton website.

two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to Payton!

Dear Grizzlies,

Welcome to the class of 2019 and their families, as they formally join the Payton community, and welcome back to our upperclassmen and families. We are so excited for the return of our compelled and compelling students. To prepare for your return, we have hired some rather remarkable educators to join and enhance our purposes and programs. We received hundreds of applications, conducted many lengthy interviews, spoke to many references, had many internal discussions about the needs of our community, and we are pleased to announce our first-round draft picks:

-Erica Bauer will give life to a newly-created, administration-level, role at Payton...the Director of Student Engagement (she earned her B.A. and M.A. from University of Dayton with major in Communication and minor in English, was a member of the University of Michigan's Consortium for Political and Social Research, earned a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Illinois-Champagne, and she has recently served as Director of Admissions and At-Risk Student Coordinator at Brooks College Prep.). Erica will help students understand and engage with varied matters related to multiculturalism and identity, and she will coordinate the efforts of our faculty to identify struggling students and to implement tailored interventions for those students.
-Marni Lewis will teach Dance and French at Payton (she earned a B.A. from Northwestern with majors in French and Dance).
-Leslie Russell will teach English (she earned a B.A. from Dartmouth with majors in English, African American Studies, and Developmental Biology).
-Devan Picard will teach Visual Arts (she earned her B.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and her M.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago).
-Kathie Ang will teach AP Biology and Honors Biotechnology (she earned her B.A. from the University of Chicago in Biological Science and Neuroscience, and an M.A. in Education from the University of Chicago).
-Priyank Srivastava will teach Chemistry and Physics (he earned his B.A. in Science from the University of Illinois-Chicago and his M.A in Education from the University of Chicago).

It's the people who matter most, and these wonderful educators, combined with our other exemplary faculty members, will create a wide-range of terrific learning opportunities for students in our varied locales of learning: classrooms, Advisory, Enrichments, and Seminars. It will be an exciting year, mostly for the student growth that will occur, and also for the fact that the construction of the west campus is due to be complete ~February, thus allowing us to broaden learning experiences to more spaces. Amongst all that is to come, we will wrap all that we do in our 4Cs of courage, compassion, character, and curiosity...and we and those around us will be better for it.

Go Grizzlies!

FRIENDS OF PAYTON
A Message From
The President

Dear Payton Families:

Happy September and welcome to the new school year! My name is Marla Gross and this is my second year as Friends of Payton (FOP) president. My daughter is a senior, and early in her freshman year I decided to volunteer to learn more about her high school experience. Through FOP I found many opportunities, and I hope you do too.

FOP is our all-volunteer parent organization. By virtue of having a student here, each parent is a member of FOP, and no dues are required. However, to support Payton, you can (and we hope you do!) participate in activities, volunteer at school functions, and donate to our school's needs.

In that vein, while the sun has been shining and the kids have been out of school, FOP has had a very busy and productive summer. Our involvement included supporting our students in the CPS-student led rally (against a later start time) held at Daley Plaza last month; beginning our Annual Appeal early, which due to the generous nature of the Payton community eased the impact of budget cuts; and hosting the freshman Parent Program in late August.

You can start getting involved by attending our FOP monthly community meetings - it's your chance to hear Principal Devine share information about the school and answer your questions. The first meeting of the school year is on Wed. Sept. 9, and thereafter on the first Tues. of every month. The meetings are held in the Library and begin at 6:15PM.

On a social note, please join your fellow Payton parents and guardians in a treasured tradition - Parents Night Out (PNO). These events are held twice during the school year and each one is hosted by a Payton parent. It's a great way to begin the school year, meet new parents, and reconnect with old ones. The fall PNO is Fri. Oct. 23. I will be there as will other members of the FOP Board, and we hope to see you then.

Looking forward to an excellent 2015-2016 school year!

Best,
Marla

Help Wanted:
Sports Editor

The newlsetter needs a new Sports Editor for the 2015-2016 school year, as former editor Steve Gallancy has moved on following the graduation of his Grizzly. The Sports Editor job entails editing short updates submitted by coaches, team parents, or student members.

The newsletter staff relies entirely on correspondents "on the ground" to report scores, highlights and other sports news for PPTW. Parents who regularly attend games and like to spread the word - and students who wants to add "sports reporter" to your list of extra curriculars - can volunteer to to write a full section or just text message results and highlights by contacting Jeanne Lamar at jmlamar@aol.com.

This fall, Payton fields teams in Sailing, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Pompon, Boys Soccer, Girls Swimming, Girls Volleyball, Boys 16" Softball, and Girls Tennis.
Check the Payton website frequently for schedule updates.

Upcoming Events

The upcoming year promises to be an exciting one for the Music Department. Mr. Glenn Rode, Director of Bands, and Ms. Kate Johnston, Director of Choirs, welcome back all new and returning Payton musicians, singers and performers!

Sounds of Sweetness (SOS), Payton's all boys a cappella group, was on their first-ever nationally televised broadcast on ABC for the "We Day" event last month. The group participated in the live event in April for the organization "Free the Children" from Toronto, Canada. In addition to the thrill of singing spontaneously with Martin Sheen backstage, SOS was honored to be a part of such a positive, life and world changing initiative. Sounds of Sweetness will be auditioning for 7 new members the first 2 weeks of school. If you know a young man who loves to sing - send him to Room 214!

Concert Choir goes to Argentina this spring! Be on the lookout for some very special events that will help get them there. The students will "sing their way to South America".... Sponsors and endorsements welcome!

Later this fall, Payton Concert Choir will head to Carl Sandburg High School to audition for the Regional and State Choirs.

Congratulations to Alexa Moster (JR) and Donald Riddle (SR) for being cast in the elite All-State Musical "Rent" to be performed the first weekend of January. In addition, Billy Lynn (SR) has been selected to sing at the opening of the show. Payton had 7 students (the most allowed) audition for this prestigious show and we are so proud that 3 of them will be representing our school and Chicago in January.

Pieces of Perfection (POP), Payton's all girls a cappella ensemble, will be auditioning for new members the second week of school. Watch for announcements! Ms. Kate Johnston was recently named the new Musical Director for POP.

Fundraising News

Annual Appeal Update
As you know, Payton faced substantial budget cuts for the 2015-2016 school year. Friends of Payton (FOP) chose to begin its Annual Appeal this summer rather than wait until the fall, as is traditionally done. Our community banded together and, with the financial support of families from every grade, grandparents, and friends, we have retained our current teacher staff, along with the robust curriculum and manageable class sizes they bring.
With the potential for additional CPS budget cuts after January 1, FOP will continue to work for the funds to secure Payton educational programs and staffing through the school year. Accordingly, the Appeal will continue throughout the year. You will receive a letter from FOP sometime in October and if you haven't yet donated, please do what you can. We still need to help fund student seminars, Global Connections trips, and professional development for teachers, to name a few areas.

Thank you for supporting Payton education programs and students!
GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
Spanish Language
Award  Winners

Congratulations to several Payton world language students who attained national recognition for excellent performances on the 2015 National Spanish Examinations.

Payton students earned a total of 5 gold, 11 silver, and 15 bronze medals along with 24 honorable mentions.  "Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, "because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 157,000 students participating in 2015."

Payton students have a long history of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers, Kathleen Gallegos, Alicia Quintero and Colleen Vallin.

This year's Payton Gold Medalists are: Claire Goldman (JR),  and seniors Camila Giraldo, Kaylor Weaver, Irie Evans, and Jacob Baskes.
Welcome Freshmen. Welcome Back, Returning Parents and Guardians.

Payton Initiative for Education (PIE) is a non-profit organization designed to build and manage an endowment fund to ensure the legacy of academic excellence at Payton. Once the endowment reaches its $3 million goal, the income generated will be used to help reduce the annual fundraising burden that falls on the entire Payton community due to the lack of sufficient public funding for school programs and supplies.

PIE is looking for committee volunteers and new board members. Committees include Investment; Development; and Marketing/Communication. It is updating its webpage so anyone with media production, photography, advertising, web experience, etc. would be an exciting addition. If you are interested in board membership, please contact Susan Orloff at president@paytonppie.org.  If you are interested in a Committee, please contact Susan Pearsall at swpearsall@gmail.com. See our temporary website www.paytonPPIE.org for more information.
CLUBS AND TEAMS
Grizzly Chessmen and Women Needed

Come one, come all - the Payton Chess Team welcomes all who are interested in playing chess. All skill levels are welcome. Practices will be held once a week during enrichment and/or after school, likely on Wed. starting in late Sept. or early Oct. and will continue through the winter. We will also provide all team members with a variety of resources for practicing, and improving, their games. We expect to have several matches against other CPS high schools and will participate in several high school tournaments over the course of the winter.

Stay tuned for further details, and in the meanwhile please feel free to contact Payton parents Steve May, at steve.may55@gmail.com, or Lauren Tatar, at ldwtatar@gamil.com, with any questions you may have or to find out more about the chess team.
