two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Year End Notes,
Budget Concerns

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

The laboratory of learning that is Payton continues unabated. Some notes:

-External Recognitions: Business Insider, WaPo, US News World Report.
-Prom...was an elegant affair at the Drake Hotel. Huge thanks to the Senior Steering Committee for all of its planning.
-34 Cheers...to our Payton band, which received Superior or Honors Superior on all of its ratings at the CPS Band Festival.
-ACT...our juniors posted a 29.9 average on the March administration of the ACT.
-Study Abroad. 10 Payton students earned scholarships from CIEE to study abroad this summer.
-The Performing Arts. The Spring Choir, Band, and Dance Concerts were all wonderful expositions of student talent.
-History Fair. 33 Payton students had their history fair projects advance to the state competition and 4 are advancing to the national History Fair.
-Payton Advanced Studies Program. Next year, 24 Seniors will dive into advanced study projects of the student's design, including: Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus, Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Front End Web Development, Comparative Government, Developing a Low-Cost Disposable Allergen Tester, Creating an Affordable Prosthetic Hand, Gender Dynamics at Payton and in the Context of Our Society...and many others.
-Letter Day. The Payton Booster Association recognized the efforts and achievement of 40 academic and athletic teams at the inaugural Payton Letter Day.
-2nd Annual Junior Book Awards...were a huge success, with dozens of colleges and universities represented.
-Athletics...Congratulations to all of our student-athletes on their commitment, development, and successes during the Spring athletic seasons...and best of luck to our athletes and coaches who continue their seasons at state tournaments. And congratulations to Boys Bowling, Girls Bowling, Girls Basketball, Debate, Cheerleading, Boys Basketball, and Chess who all earned IHSA Team Academic Awards.

We continue to await the receipt of our budget for the upcoming, 2015-2016 academic year. Based on information thus far gleaned, the budget situation does not look promising for the CPS and, thus, for Payton. We will continue to advocate smartly and tirelessly for our people and programs. We have been successful in the past with our budget discussions, but I do not handicap the likelihood of success this time. As we are facing very real, very large cuts, please know that I believe in the efficacy of teachers...they are the catalysts for student growth on our campus...and

I will do whatever I can to limit the impact of budget cuts on the faculty...all in an effort to limit any impact budget cuts would have on student learning.

Thank you to all who continue to make Payton such a special place for our students and faculty. A particular note of thanks to our intelligent and eminently kind-hearted friends in FOP, who do so many small, medium, and large things to enhance the Payton experience. And a thank you to our families whose children are graduating in June...thank you for all you have done throughout the past four years to advance this community!

Enjoy the beginnings of summer!

Sincerely,

Tim Devine, Principal

It Ain't Over 'Til....

Even though the number of school days left is getting smaller, the number of volunteers the school needs keeps growing! We need several dozen Payton parents and guardians to help out between now and the first day of school on Tues., Sept. 8. Please consider signing up to help with one of the following activities - it is a great way to support Payton and to connect with other Payton families.

Teacher Appreciation Lunch, Jun. 22, 12-1PM.  This annual celebration of the teachers and staff who make Payton terrific includes, by tradition, homemade desserts from Payton families. We need several volunteers to set up, serve food, and clean up on Jun. 22 and several to send in some homemade goodies - if you can help, please send a note to  FOPCommunications@gmail.com.

Welcoming Incoming Families. We are launching a new event to have current families welcome incoming families to Payton and help them get connected and involved in our school community. After our Freshmen Orientation program for students and parents on Aug. 27, we will have our first Payton's Back to School Bash from 5-7PM. We need folks to pitch in to make this work - please be a part of this exciting new event, and send a note to FriendsofPayton@gmail.com.

Registration, Aug 24, 25, 26, 27. If you know the alphabet and want to help make sure all our kids are signed up to start school on Sept. 8, you are a perfect fit for helping with registration! We need 25 volunteers on each of the four mornings that returning students will be registering (SR 8/24, JR 8/25, Soph. 8/26, Fresh. 8/27). If you can help one (or more!) morning, send a note to FriendsofPayton@gmail.com.

Ongoing Needs. We always need volunteers - whether it's fundraising, Teacher Wish List, Spirit Wear, in school events, or re-designing the FOP link on the school website. If you have any experience or interest in any of these areas, or would just like to get more involved and aren't sure how, please send a note to FriendsofPayton@gmail.com and we'll put you to work!
FRIENDS OF PAYTON
A Message From
Marla Gross

Dear Payton Families:

I want to say thank you to everyone who has participated, volunteered, and donated this year! Through FOP, Payton families provided an extraordinary amount of support throughout the year. Over 150 people volunteered at events, and through our fundraising activities we raised money for student activities and travel, teacher professional development, technology, and other things that help make Payton great.

While it has been a successful year, I can't help but worry about the challenges the school faces in the coming school year, primarily in the form of gaps in the budget provided by CPS. The school will be relying on FOP for support not only for the things we've traditionally helped provide, like professional development for teachers, technology, and international travel, but possibly for things that have historically been covered by the CPS budget, like textbooks. Please remember this for next year - our students will need your help.

To those families with graduating seniors, good luck in all your endeavors! To those who will be back at Payton in the fall, I hope you have a great summer and come back ready for another terrific year.

Best,

Marla

FOP President

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
A Most Successful
International Night 2015

Together the Payton community came together to raise more than $3300 in funds to support our international travel programs. Many thanks to all who volunteered their time and talent to this memorable celebration of our school's diversity. We couldn't have done it without you!

Ready, Set, Plan: If you missed the chance to broaden your horizons through global travel and exchange experiences this year, mark your calendar now to plan for 2016. Key deadlines and info sessions come up very quickly in the fall.  Start thinking now about places and courses of study that interest you. Be sure to budget enough time to fill out applications and secure teacher recommendations. Always check program websites and Payton Global Connections for specific due dates and guidelines.

A huge thanks to all of the Concert Band, Chamber Strings, and Jazz Orchestra members for their hard work at the Instrumental Spring Concert last month.

Congratulations to the Concert Band on its across-the-board Superior Rating at the CPS Band Festival in April. Out of 40 points, the judges awarded scores of 38, 38, and 40 for the prepared selection and, out of 30 points, the band scored 29 for the sight reading portion. Bravo!

The Payton Jazz Orchestra (PJO) has been invited to perform for the annual CURE Chicago Event at Navy Pier on Jun. 24. This will be the 12th appearance by the group at the annual fundraiser for Citizens United For Research in Epilepsy, founded by Susan and David Axelrod.

Thanks to the PJO's members, especially the graduating seniors, who are returning and taking part of their summer break to perform at the event.

And from the Choir Room....after fantastic spring concerts, Concert Choir will collaborate on Jun. 1 with Northside College Prep on their final concert of the year, singing John Rutter's Birthday Madrigals. Concert Choir will sing Wanting Memories at graduation on Jun. 8. After bidding the wonderful seniors goodbye, Concert Choir members will set their sights on the Argentina tour scheduled for Apr. 2016. Be on the look out for some amazing opportunities to hear the choir as it raises funds for this incredible journey.

Sounds of Sweetness has had a very sweet year indeed. A spur of the moment opportunity came their way in March and they sang (on 3 days' notice) in front of 16,000 people with The Band Perry at the All State Arena, and hang out backstage with Martin Sheen. SOS will convene again at the recording studio on Jun. 18 to archive this year's unique blend of talents and energy. This time it will be a digital release - details forthcoming.

Word is out for the incoming 9th graders to audition for music classes. Thanks to all of you who assist and advise incoming families. The choir room heard a record number of auditions. We are all looking forward to working with Payton's incoming talent.

Fundraising News

ˇGracias! Gratias tibi! Merci! Xičxič Thank You!

Friends of Payton (FOP) would like to thank each and every one of you who has generously donated time, effort, and support throughout the school year. Many of the school's activities, programs, and supplies are funded by proceeds raised by FOP. This is only possible because of Payton's dynamic, caring community. FOP funding efforts may be winding down for the year, but we are fast at work planning for next year. If you would like to get involved, send us an email at FOPFundraising@gmail.com.

Spring Sports Roundup

Girls Track and Field: The Lady Grizzlies have wrapped up a tremendous season, including great performances from some of the younger students.

Congratulation to freshman Alana Chandler, who advanced to the ISHA 2A State Finals in the 3200 meters after capturing second place, with a personal record of 12:14, at Sectionals. Also at Sectionals, the 4x800 meter relay team of Samantha Foster (SR), Esha Kular (JR), Dharma Seda Gonzalez (Frosh), and Katelynn Jankowiak (JR) demolished a Payton record with a sub-11-minute finish. Overall, Payton captured seventh place out of the 14 teams at the meet.

Earlier this month, at the CPS Frosh/Soph Championships, Payton had a strong sixth place finish in a crowded field of 21 teams. Jankowiak took first place in the 200M, and sixth place in the shot put.

Boys Tennis: Led by Coach Sean King and team captains Jack Coletto (SR) and Peter Williamson (SR), Boys Varsity Tennis had an UNDEFEATED regular season racking up wins against Lincoln Park, Jones, Lane Tech, Morgan Park, Northside and Whitney Young! Congratulations to all players including seniors, Jack Coletto, Lev Kendrick, Jack MacDougall, and Peter Williamson; juniors, Alex Ernst and Jack Mellske; sophomores, Asher Borstein, Adam Isaacs and Cassius Thom; and freshmen, Adam Clark, Isaac Gershberg, Alex Vinarov, and Alex Xu.

In the post-season City Championship individual tournament, Alex Vinarov placed third for first singles; Adam Clark placed third for second singles; Jack Coletto and Peter Williamson placed first for first doubles; Asher Borstein and Alex Ernst placed third for second doubles; and Lev Kendrick and Jack Mellske placed second for third doubles. In the team city championship tournament, Payton beat Morgan Park and Northside to move on to the finals. In a heartbreaking loss to Whitney Young, Payton finished second in the city team championship.

Singles players Alex Vinarov and Adam Clark and doubles players Jack Coletto, Peter Williamson, Asher Borstein and Alex Ernst competed in Sectionals over Memorial Day weekend. Way to go Grizzlies!

Girls Softball:  The girl's fast pitch softball team has drawn together well with most players returning from last year. They are under the leadership of first year head coach Chris Thompson, building on his role as assistant coach last year. Freshman Gracie Gonzalez has handled most of the pitching duties. Juliana Iturralde (JR) has provided much of the hitting power this season. Team captain Abigail Hancock (SR), a four-year varsity starter, has provided leadership on and off the field. The team was successful in making it to both the city and regional playoffs. Although they were eliminated in the first round of each playoff, the entire team, from the starters to those who played roles off the bench, brought a good spirit of encouragement and joy in the game. Thank you and good luck to seniors: Taylor Bailey, Kandace Williamson, Abigail Hancock and Natalia Estrada.

Sailing: Ahoy maties! The Payton Sailing Team is looking for new sailors, as they say goodbye to several veteran sailors who are graduating this year. Summer practice is required. Interested students should email Cathy Nardi or David Wagner ASAP for details about the team.

Girls Soccer: On May 30, the Grizzlies won the IHSA Sectional Championship against Pritzker. Payton's 1-0 victory came from a well struck cross from Lilly Blender (soph) that ended up on captain Sophie Goethals' (SR) right foot and she blasted a shot past the Pritzker goal keeper for the only score of the game. Coach Escobar's squad continued to play inspired, team oriented soccer that features a next player up attitude. Against Pritzker, it was Blender's turn to step up and motivate the team with her all out effort and skillful attacks. In the previous game versus Jones, Brooke Gardner (SR) took the leadership role and made hustle plays on both ends of the field. The Jones game also featured a standout performance by captain Maddie Nash (SR) who showed athleticism and versatility by matching up defensively with Jones' best player and scoring an important second-half goal. The goal sealed the 2-0 victory over Jones after Goethals set up Grace Hildebrand (SR) for a first half tally.

Payton took 2nd in the regular season in the competitive Public Premier Conference. With an overall 11-3-3 record, the Grizzlies earned the #1 seed in the Bensenville Sectional. Payton won its first 2 playoff matches decisively over Lakeview and Foreman, and captured the team's 4th consecutive regional championship. In the post-season Payton's stingy defense, led by captain Meredith Leon (SR) and outside backs Megan Lewis (SR) and Cami Grandjean (soph), has allowed only 1 goal in the 4 playoff off matches. The team will need continued contributions from the back line as well as the midfield dominance that has emerged from the remarkable play of sophomore duo Hannah Lowenthal and Vivian Gasca when they take on Carmel Catholic of Mundelein in the Super Sectional on Jun. 2 at 5:30 in River Forest.

NEXT MEETING JUNE 9
Local School Council (LSC)
Update

At the May 11 meeting, Principal Devine provided the following updates:

He expects a June release of the CPS budget, which is later than usual. As widely reported, the budget will be a challenge given the CPS deficit of over $1 billion, and the recent Illinois Supreme Court decision finding that the state pension reform legislation is unconstitutional. Mr. Devine will begin sending portions of the CIWP to LSC members this week, including the portions delineating department goals for student growth.

Construction on the new building is proceeding on schedule, and the contract for field construction has been let.

Student programming for the 2015-2016 school year is underway. Students pick their top 7 choices for classes next year and include 3 alternate selections. Several new courses will be offered, including African American Literature, AP Capstone, and AP Human Geography (a freshman only class).

PE waivers for student athletes have been issued. Waivers are also available for AP Capstone students. The administration has proposed to CPS that students be eligible for PE waivers on successful completion of the Pacer fitness test, and are awaiting a response.

In the March ACT, the class of 2016 scored an average of 29.9, the highest in Payton history for the on-campus first test.

Two Payton seniors, Cristopher Herrera and Brianna Scott, have been awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which provides them with full scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate programs of study.

The LSC has received filing papers from five candidate for the three parent representative positions that will be open effective Jun.19. The candidates made brief presentations at the May meeting, stating their interest in the position and their qualifications for same. The retiring members will resign at the Jun. 18 LSC meeting and the new members will be voted into office immediately thereafter.

Please join us for the next LSC meeting on Jun. 9. The meeting will be held at 6PM in the Library and is open to the public.
