At press time, this year's remaining meeting schedule is as follows: 4/1, 5/6, 6/3.

All meetings are held in the Library.

fop fundraising is

a year-round effort

The Friends of Payton needs your valuable donations to support Payton's educational mission There are three ways to do it:

1. Mail a check payable to FOP at 1034 N. Wells St., Chicago, IL 60610

2. Drop a check into the FOP box in the school office. Make it payable to FOP.

lsc meetings are
 open, next is 5/11

Parents, guardians, and the public are welcome at Local School Council (LSC) meetings, which are held monthly in the Payton Library at 6PM.

The LSC is an elected body that has three main responsibilities: School Budget, Continuous Improvement Work Plan (formerly SIPAAA), and Principal Evaluation, Retention and Selection.

All are welcome to attend and to make comments during the "Public Comments" portion of the meeting.

For more on the LSC, including a schedule of upcoming meetings, minutes of previous meetings, and a roster of members, please visit the LSC page of the Payton website.

two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

Please send us current Payton news to share with other Payton families. Here are the submission guidelines:

Less is more -- 200 words or less works best in an e-newsletter. If that's not enough room to tell the whole story, include a phone number, email address, or web link to give our readers more details. Send text as a Word attachment or type it into the body of your email.

Include a picture or two if you have them; send pictures as .jpg attachments, do not embed them in your Word document.

All submissions are due the 25th of the preceding month. Send them to: fopnewseditor@gmail.com

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Payton Achieves,
CPS Budget Cuts Loom

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

The values of Payton's four Cs-Character, Compassion, Curiosity, and Courage-continue to be acted upon in numerous ways. To wit:

-Sophomore, Gloria Kevluciate, was elected to serve as the student representative on the Local School Council. We welcome her voice and ideas and offer many, many thanks to the tremendous thoughtfulness of our graduating LSC representative, Lucian Black, who has served on the LSC for the past two years.

-34 Cheers to Sarah Esslinger, our Counseling Intern, who was named Graduate Student of the Year by the Illinois School Counselor Association.

Payton was recognized as the 5th smartest public high school in the United States by  Business Insider.

-34 Cheers to senior, Brooke Gardner, for being named to the IHSA All-State Academic Team!

-Our junior class posted a 29.9 average on the recent ACT.

-34 Cheers to Brianna Scott and Chris Herrera, who both earned the Gates Millenium Scholarship. Congratulations to them, their elementary and high school teachers, and their parents.

-34 Cheers to two of our phenomenal debators, Lenny Brahin and Luisa Cusick, who placed in the top 20 in the national Tournament of Champions.

-Our seniors have been hearing back from colleges. It is exciting to learn where they will be writing the next chapters of their life's story. Much goes into the college application process from both the family and school. Notable thanks to our counselors and teachers who wrote thousands...literally thousands...of college and scholarship recommendations for our students.

On a broader and quite important note, the CPS will issue budgets to schools in June. As of this writing, CPS has a $1.16 billion shortfall (out of a $6.4 billion budget). Unless the shortfall is addressed by CPS, City Hall, the Governor, and the State Legislature in very short order, CPS will impose the largest budget cut in its history. This would negatively affect many of Payton's people and programs. If an 18% budget cut comes to Payton, it would impact our course offerings, extracurricular programs, class sizes, and the depth and breadth of our faculty. We have been and will continue to advocate for our people and programs, and we have tendered many suggestions as to how the budget shortfall can be lessened, but please know that we-and all other CPS schools-are facing a sizeable cuts. We will be given more information in June, so it is currently not known what specific impact budget cuts would have. This general information is offered now so that there is no surprise if cuts do occur. A promise: we-the Payton administration, the Instructional Leadership Team, and the Local School Council-will tirelessly and thoughtfully advocate for the needs of our students and faculty. We have done so in the past, and you have our commitment that we will do so again. We will keep you appraised.

CLUBS AND ACADEMICS

Girls Ultimate Frisbee Off to Great Start

The Payton Girls Ultimate Team is Chicago Public School's first all-girls Ultimate Frisbee team. When veteran player Nicole Cantello (Coach Nic), family friend of Zoe Kaplan (JR), said she would get a team of women coaches to volunteer their time if Zoe could get enough students for a team. Zoe pulled together 16 girls an they began practicing in winter 2014. This past fall another 12 girls joined the team, giving Payton enough players to field a second team.

Coaches Leanne King, Wendy Rochon and Nicole Cantello all have impressive backgrounds in the sport. Leanne King has played for the Australian National Team, and currently plays for Dish, a Chicago women's club. Wendy Rochon also plays for Dish and captains a coed team called "Bleeding Hearts." Nicole Cantello (head coach) played for 25 years and is now retired from club play. All three volunteer their time for the love of Ultimate and the desire to create and inspire more women players.

During its first year, the team took 2nd at State and was selected for this year's Regionals - an elite tournament for high-ranking teams that takes place in Ames, Iowa on May 16-17. The team is currently fundraising for its Regional début; if you are interested in being a sponsor please contact Coach Cantello (cantello.nicole@epa.gov) for more information.

The girls continue work on fundamentals, especially how to reliably complete a variety of throws in a game situation. They just competed in the Neuqua Knockout tournament in Joliet against teams from around the country and also have local games against Pritzker, Latin and Lindbloom. Team practices on Wed. and Fri. after school (practice is indoors during the winter months). For more information click to contact Coach Cantello or co-captain Zoe Kaplan.  Everyone can have a Grizzly's team disk for $10 -- just find a player. Profits help defer team costs and tournament fees.

Payton Logo COUNSELING CORNER
Counseling News
and Updates

Payton's Counseling Office has been buzzing with energy over the last month. Juniors are starting to get more serious about their college search process, sophomore meetings are taking place, and seniors are finalizing their college decisions. All of the students are starting to think about classes for next year and we encourage students and parents to stop in or set-up up a meeting if you have questions.

The College Fair was well attended on Apr. 21 and we had many great conversations with parents during report card pick up. Overall, it's been a busy and fun month. With over a thousand AP exams taking place between May 4 and May 15, things don't appear to be slowing down anytime soon!

What It Takes to Raise Funds for Items CPS Budget Does Not Cover:

-Volunteers Needed: 100+

-Volunteer Hours Needed: 1,000+

-Number of Supporters Needed: Infinite

-And a Community Coming Together to Celebrate Our Amazing School!

Our Payton community is simply amazing. People pulling together and tapping their resources to support our award winning school is a truly priceless gift. We cannot thank each and every volunteer enough for their time and dedication throughout the year. FOP's fundraising efforts help support our school on so many levels. Examples of items that our students and faculty would otherwise be without include: a 3D printer, AP test review books, upgrades for the planetarium, text books, and professional development programs. Constant fundraising efforts are needed to continue to fund programs and supplies due to the limited CPS budget.

FOP Wants You! The Vice President of Fundraising and Gala Chair(s) roles will become vacant in June. Payton is looking for leaders to fill these positions. Please contact Candise Cho at FOPFundraising@gmail.com for details.

Teacher WishList: Have no fear - if you missed your opportunity to purchase a wish list item at Report Card Pick Up, donate now by clicking here.

And again, thank you to all Payton families, teachers, engineers, security, staff and administrators for supporting our school store through your Spirit Wear purchases. All sales benefit our Diverse Learners as well as other Payton programs. Spirit Wear is a great way to strengthen our community, socialize and show our Payton Pride!

Spring Sports Update

Girls Track and Field: The Lady Grizzlies have been blazing new trails on the track, with great performances at the Intra City Quad and Tiger Classic meets this month. Katelyn Hutchinson (soph) managed to win, place and show at the Intra City Quad with a 1st place finish in the discus event (61 ft.), 2nd place in the 100 meters (13.60), and 3rd place in the shot put (25 ft.). Katelynn Jankowiak (JR) sailed to 2nd place honors in the long jump. Other notable showings included Zirui Guo (JR), the top performing Payton runner in the varsity 200M (31.36), and Sanajah Johnson (frosh) in the frosh-soph 200M (31.98).

The Tiger Classic brought stiff competition from teams like Latin, but Hutchinson once again claimed 2nd place in the 100 meters. Brittany Lundberg (SR) brought home 4th place in the 400 meter dash (1:10.00).

The CPS Freshman/Sophomore Trials were held on Apr. 25 and featured strong performances by Hutchinson: 2nd place in 200 meters (28.85), and freshmen Abby Rooney in the 400 meter, Audrey Pettigrew in the 800 meter, and Alana Chandler in the 600 meter.

Coming up this month are the CPS City Championships (May 5-9), Sectionals (May 15) and the IHSA State Championships (May 22). Go Grizzlies!

Girls Soccer: The varsity team built on its strong start by winning four of its five matches in Apr., including 3 Public Premier Conference victories. After a hard fought 2-0 defeat to talented Lane Tech, Coach Escobar's squad bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Von Steuben. Goals by captain Sophie Goethals (SR), Grace Hildebrand (SR) and Stella Binion (soph) paced the offense, alongside an outstanding defensive back line led by captain Meredith Leon (SR) that shut down Von Steuben's offense. Over the two-game stretch the Payton defense, which featured an aggressive full team effort, managed to contain the opponents' attacks and held a pair of prolific scorers - each bound for Division 1 college soccer careers next season - to just two goals.

The team needed its entire roster to notch a couple of come-from-behind 2-1 victories over U High and Curie. Coach Escobar juggled his lineup and relied on every player to step up and secure road victories. Captains Goethals and Maddie Nash (SR) provided inspiration at U High and Hildebrand lofted a well-placed shot from 30 yards out for the winning goal in the final minutes. At Curie, Coach Escobar's determined and strategic coaching helped free Binion for a goal early in the second half to tie the score, before Goethal's laser shot put gave Payton the win. Two days later against Jones, a Goethals penalty shot early in the game opened the scoring. Nash secured the win with the final goal, beating Jones 2-0. The Grizzlies are 7-2-1 as of Apr. 26.

REMINDER: The girls' final regular season game is against Latin at Toyota Park, home of the Chicago Fire. Tickets are still available and by purchasing your $20 ticket you get admission not only to the Payton game on May 3, but also to a professional soccer double header the following weekend, May 9. The double header features the Fire vs. Real Salt Lake and Chicago Red Stars women's pro team versus the Boston Breakers. A fan bus will provide free round trip transportation from Payton to Toyota Park for the Latin game on May 3. Students will need a permission slips to ride the bus. To purchase game tickets please see Coach Escobar or ask a team member for information.
