A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Spring At Last

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

It was so good to see so many of you at the Gala. It was a wonderful event, made most special by the friendships that were forged and continued, and for the ongoing support each of you has for our many programs and people. And a very special thanks to the many, many parents who aided in putting together a vibrant and fun evening. The omnipresent commitment of Payton parents is seminal to us being effective in hastening forth the varied skills of our students. Thank you!

A few updates:

Construction...continues unabated: The crews have completed the below-grade construction (e.g. installation of 85' deep caissons and the foundation) to the vertical construction, where we will see the form of the new, west building take shape. The vertical construction is expected to take approximately 12 months.

Parking Lot: Along with constructing the new building, crews will build a parking lot on our field just south of the east building. Currently, faculty and staff park on Hill Street and on leased parking lots near the Brown line and Oak Street. CPS is not renewing those leases, which would leave the school with far too few parking spaces. The new lot will provide notable benefits to Payton's community: 68 on-site parking spots (including ADA accessible spots) for use by our faculty during the school day, and by guests in the afternoon and weekend (e.g. parking for performing arts productions, athletic events, parent meetings, academic competitions, afternoon, weekend, and summer events). Payton will finally control its athletic field. Many don't know, but long ago, CPS entered into a 50-year lease with another entity that controls the field until the year 2050. With construction of the parking lot, Payton will, for the first time in the school's history, have self-determination over the use of the field. The construction will include the installation of an outfield fence for our girls 12" fast pitch softball team and our boys 16" softball team, and there will be potential for us to lease parking on dates when we will not use the lot (of course, usage by Payton's people will be the priority). Cars will enter and exit the lot off of Oak Street so as not to add congestion to car and foot traffic along Wells Street. Construction will begin after Memorial Day and conclude in mid-August. The project comes at no cost to the Payton community.

2015-2016 Calendar: Is being constructed in partnership with our union membership. As soon as approval is granted, we will certainly publish it to students and families.

Class of 2019: We are excited to welcome the incoming freshman class, the top-scoring freshman class in the CPS. By all accounts, it is a truly dynamic lot of compelled and compelling students.

As we turn the calendar to April, I hope Spring Break finds you with family and friends and gives you time to relax and absorb yourself into life-filling aspects of our human condition.

Where Do Your FOP Donations Go?

Payton parents/guardians, families, and community members continue a tradition of generosity and support for Payton students. This year your FOP contributions have provided virtually the only unrestricted dollars the school has had to spend. These dollars are critical to ensure that current students have needed technology, updated textbooks, research materials, top quality seminars, far-ranging exchange programs, and extracurricular club and team support. In the next few issues of PPTW, we will spotlight the many ways in which your donations go directly towards giving your child and exceptional high school education.

Funding Educational Travel: Global Connections

Research on the impact of student international travel concludes that these educational trips and exchanges have a life-long effect. They correlate with higher graduation rates, increased interest and engagement in education, and higher salaries later in life. They prepare our children to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. Global Connections' purpose is:

From the beginning it has been Payton's mission that as many students as possible, regardless of socioeconomic status, have the opportunity to experience first-hand the world language and culture that they are studying during their four years at our school. The World Language Department has led trips to China, Taiwan, Japan, France, Canada, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Several of these are ongoing exchanges with sister schools; others are collaborations with reputable language institutes in those countries. Every year we continue to develop new cultural and language immersion opportunities for our students.

Over the course of the 2014-2015 school year, 93 of our Grizzlies have traveled abroad, absorbing the history and cultures of South Aftrica, China, Mexico, Taiwan, Russia, Czech Republic, and China.
Your FOP donations make these educational experiences
accessible to Payton students. Thank you.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Payton Science Olympiad Team
Moves on to State Competition

The Payton Science Olympiad Team has been busy preparing for and competing in several competitions. The team took 1st place at Regionals (bringing home 30+ medals) qualifying it to go to the State Competition, held on Apr. 18 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This marks the 3rd year that the team has taken 1st place at Regionals. Last year they came in 11th at State -- the highest CPS placement ever!

Competitions last all day with up to 23 different events taking place. The members work as teams on all events, with each team participating in 3 or 4 events. Every member of the team plays a crucial role and students learn to work with their partners and depend on each other's strengths to pull off a win. Events can consist of a build event where students build a device to use in competition, a lab event, a testing event in which a pair or trio completes a test, or some combination of test and build/lab.

Hanna Tomlinson (SR), one of the student leaders, says that she enjoys competing in the build events the most and spends 4+ hours a week to prepare for one. The team works hard but this group also likes spending down time with each other between events, playing cards or just hanging out. Other student leaders include Ryan Harrington (SR), Ekaterina "Stella" Tsotsos (SR), and Kit Ng (JR).

The club meets once a week, usually on an Orange enrichment day and on Fridays as often as possible. To get more information on meeting days and times and the club in general, contact the faculty sponsors, Mr. Bill Lyons (Science) at wlyons@cps.edu or Ms. Donna Figenshu (Science) dmfigenshu@cps.edu. You can also check out the national website at: www.soinc.org. Good Luck at State, Science Olympians!

CLUBS AND ACADEMICS
Future Problem Solvers Advance to International Competition

Congratulations to freshmen Isabel Diersen (left) and Catherine Johnson (right) who placed 1st and 3rd, respectively, in the Illinois Future Problem Solving Bowl (FPSB) Individual Competition. First place winners advance to the International Finals to represent Illinois in the Individual Competition. Second and third place winners also advance to the International Finals but are combined with three other students from different countries and/or states to compete as a MAGIC (Multiple - Affiliate Global Issues Competition) team. This year's International Conference will be held on Jun 10-14 at Iowa State University.

Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI) is an international program that involves thousands of students from over 15 countries around the world. Its mission is to foster students' ability to design and promote positive futures through problem solving using critical and creative thinking. One competitive component of FPSPI has participants research a series of global topics and learn a six-step creative problem solving process. Problem solvers apply their topic and creative problem solving knowledge to address a charge presented in an imagined situation, termed Future Scene. The topic at the Illinois FPSB was 'processed food'. In each competition, a panel of trained evaluators score student work and return it with feedback including suggestions for improvement. Click these links for more information on Illinois-FPSB and FPSPI.

Good luck at the International Conference, Isabel and Catherine!

Parents & Guardians:
Mindset Seminar

A growing body of research suggests that "mindset"--the way that we interpret success and failure--is a huge component in happiness, health, and future success. At Payton, we've made it a priority to nurture students' "growth mindsets" this year by changing how we teach, and how we talk to students about their challenges and struggles. Come to a co-presentation with Mr. Paul Karafiol (Resident Principal) and Payton Parent Alan Drimmer (Chief Academic Officer, Apollo Education Group) to find out more about what a "growth mindset" is, what it can do for your child, and what you (and we) can do to foster growth mindsets. Join us on Wed., Apr. 22 at 7PM in the Library.

Stars Under the Skyline - a Gala Success!

Thanks to so many relentless and dedicated Star volunteers, the annual Gala was filled with fun games, dancing and mingling with old and new friends, while raising the much-needed funds to support Payton's programs. Everyone rallied and pulled together another amazing evening, led by Star Gala Co-Chairs Cyndy Lyons and Sheila O'Sullivan! We also wish to extend a special thanks to Pieces of Perfection, Sounds of Sweetness, Galaxi, and Ms. Kate Johnston (Music) for their stunning entertainments. It was a pleasure working with an amazing and diligent group of volunteers and to share an evening with our Star community. We hope everyone enjoyed the introduction of mobile bidding this year, led by Jane Sheppard. It created a fun bidding experience and helped make the check-out simpler. The evening was a success, thanks to the many generous Star donors and bidders. Full details will come soon.

Non-Attendee Auction Winners may pick up their prizes on Wed. Apr. 1, 6:15-7PM at the Friends of Payton Community Meeting in the Library, or on Wed. Apr 15, 3:30-7PM in the Atrium during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Special arrangements can be made upon request. Extra fees may apply.

We want to hear from you and we welcome any questions or comments. We would especially love to hear from you if you are interested in filling a lead role next year. Please email us and let us know! Always in gratitude, Candise Cho (VP - FOP Fundraising), FOPFundraising@gmail.com.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: CHICAGO FIRE
Payton v. Latin at Toyota Park;
Chicago Fire & Chicago Red Stars Too
Reported by Lara Nowak(SR)

This year the Chicago Fire has given the girls the chance to face off against Latin at the Fire's home pitch, Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois. The game will be on Sun. May 3 and a fan bus will be available to take Payton students from school to the game - at no charge!

In exchange for this wonderful opportunity, the girls are selling tickets to a soccer doubleheader at Toyota Park on May 9. Chicago Fire will play Real Sal Lake, followed by a women's professional game between Chicago Red Stars and the Boston Breakers. With your purchase of a $20 ticket, you can attend all 3 games! All $20 tickets are advance sales, but day-of tickets for the Payton v. Latin game can also be purchased on the day of the game for $10 if tickets remain available.

The team will be playing on the stadium field, and plan to sell tickets for the game during all lunch periods in the upcoming weeks. The game is a great way to spend time with your Payton pals, or have an afternoon out with family. The Lady Grizzlies are already getting psyched for their professional (park) debut and ask the Payton community to help make this opportunity possible by purchasing tickets and coming out to cheer them on. "Playing in a professional stadium is going to be an amazing experience, and there will be so much more hype when it's against a team like Latin", says team manager Caroline Rooney (SR). Ask Coach Paul Escobar (P.E.) or contact a member of the girls' soccer teams with any questions about the games, tickets, or other information.

Soccer Season Begins!

The team is thrilled to have Coach Escobar as their head coach this year, and he began the season with challenging new training and fitness goals. "Hard work, heart, and hustle mixed with talent make you the greatest. There may be people that have more talent than you, but there is no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do". The team put Esco's training to the test the opening game - a win against Kennedy. The girls then beat Parker in a thrilling 4-2 victory featuring goals by Grace Hildebrand (SR), Sophie Goethals (SR), and Stella Binion (soph). Next came a 3-1 win against Elmwood Park, followed by a 3-3 tie with Whitney. The Grizzlies face Lane at Lane on Apr. 1

Spring Sports Underway

Girls Track & Field: The Lady Grizzlies have been bringing the heat to our unseasonably cool spring, with strong performances at the team and individual levels. Early last month, Payton took 2nd place out of 11 teams at the UHigh Meet #2, with top performances from the 4x800 relay team, finishing 2nd with a strong anchor leg by Elizabeth Shirk (SR), and a 3rd place showing by Samantha Foster (SR) a season personal best time 12:58. Katelynn Jankowiak (JR) leapt 13'10" to take 5th place in the long jump.

Returning to UHigh the following week, Payton had a good showing, finishing #5 out of 9 teams, with 36 points. Competition was very strong. Whitney Young and Brooks led the way, but several Payton team members registered personal bests at the meet. Jankowiak brought her long jump out to a personal best of 14'8", and Nia McFall (Soph) accomplished a personal best record of 8.51 in the 60 meter dash. In the 1600 meters, Payton had two of the top four runners, led by Foster (2nd place) and freshman Alana Chandler (4th). At the Mar. 22 CPS Championships, the Grizzlies were 9th in the field of 12 teams. The 4x800 relay squad, led by Jankowiak, took 3rd place, as did Foster in the 3200 meters. Chandler finished 4th in the 1600 meters with a personal best of 5:48.

Boys Baseball: This year seven seniors will anchor the Grizzlies, led by captain Christopher Huerta and co-captains Will Bernstein, Jack Brosnan, Ubaldo Castillo, Michael Mazurkiewicz and Danny Stiefel. Juniors Bison Carcelli, Zac Veitch and Michael May further power this year's formidable squad, with lofty goals to capture the city title along with recapturing a 3A Regional title, and playing well into June in the IHSA state tournament. Coach Fred Huerta, helming the team for his second year, notes "the 2015 Varsity team looks very promising...the leadership on this team is second to none."

On May 3, the Grizzlies take on Jones in the inaugural North-South Challenge at UIC's Curtis Granderson Stadium. The Challenge is a mini tournament pitting teams from the top two conferences in the city, Jackie Robinson North and South, for bragging rights. In the planning stages for this event, as well, is a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness. "It is very important our program recognizes we can make a difference off the field," said Coach Huerta, citing that many members of the team led off the 2015 season by participating in the Chicago Polar Plunge benefiting the Special Olympics, raising nearly $1,900 with the support of parents and fans

This season's schedule is online at the MaxPreps site. Go Grizzlies!

NEXT MEETING APRIL 20
Payton Exterior Photo
Local School Council (LSC)

At the LSC meeting on Mar. 9th. Mr. Devine and Mr. Karafiol reported on various events, projects, and developments around the school:

Preparations for PARCC testing are underway. CIWP goal-setting and planning is taking place in all the academic departments to develop robust improvement processes with feedback. Construction on the addition continues and is slightly ahead of schedule. Planning continues for a school parking lot on part of Becker Field (Oak and Wells). Snow days will be made up on Jun. 18-19 for students. Teachers will have professional development at school on Jun. 22-23rd. The 2015-2016 calendar is in the works and will be voted on by the school's union membership. A parent symposium about "Mindsets" is in the planning stages. The SSS (Support for Struggling Students) team has had very positive results this year with its interventions. In Semester 1 of 2012-2013 there were twenty course failures among all 9th graders. In Semester 1 of this year there was only one course failure among 9th graders. A new research-based course, AP Capstone is in the works to begin next year.

Mr. Galson also presented the Math Department's annual report. The department's focus this year was to revise course layouts, and horizontal and vertical alignments. These are now available on the WPCP website. Additionally, math department member have been active presenting at a number of professional conferences.

2015-2016 School Budget

Payton is still awaiting next year's budget from CPS, but the district overall is facing a $1.6 billion budget shortfall. This school year 100% of Payton's student- based-budgeting money is already dedicated to staff salaries.

The Payton LSC is looking for interested parents/guardians to fill three positions being vacated by exiting parent representatives whose children are graduating in June. These are one year positions. If you are interested, please attend the upcoming LSC meeting on Apr. 20, or email current LSC Chair Kaarina Salovaara.

Please join us at the LSC meeting on Apr. 20 at 6PM in the Library.
