stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
A Winter of Progress

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

The varied seasons of the school year bring new aspects of delight and excitement. At this time of year, post-Payton plans for our seniors are becoming clearer, and we continue to imagine the futures of these Renaissance young women and men. Simultaneously, we begin to welcome our rising freshman class (Payton's class of 2019). For the 4th straight year, this is the top-scoring class in CPS. We are getting to know them and, by all accounts, they appear to be a dynamic collection of learners.

Many wonderful experiences percolate in and around campus. Despite outdoor temperatures, our spring sports programs are getting underway, students are putting the final production pieces together for our spring musical - Into the Woods, we learned that we have 5 finalists for the Presidential Scholars Award, the annual Wellness Fair was a terrific success, our global exchange programs are in full bloom (Prague, Taiwan, South Africa, Russia, Beijing, Oaxaca), Sweetness Day is around the corner, spring Seminars are underway (17 of the Seminars were designed by students), and the annual History Fair has commenced. We also begin to cast our eyes towards the next academic year, and are laying plans for some new course possibilities: AP Capstone (for sophomores, juniors) - a new course that Payton has been asked to pilot, and AP Human Geography, which will supplant Honors World Studies for some freshmen.  Among our many fortunes at Payton are the tireless and dedicated faculty who facilitate so many of these opportunities for our students.

Construction on the new building is progressing well. The below-ground construction will be complete within a few weeks, at which time the crews will shift to the vertical construction. Plans are being made for the creation of a parking lot. Currently, many faculty and staff park on the leased lots near the Brown Line on Oak St., but CPS will not be renewing the costly lease. Thus, we are working with architects, central office, varied faculty, and the LSC to implement a good, workable plan.

We continue to make mindful evolutions to our programs so that our students are served well. Thank you for being a substantial part of these evolutions. See you at the Gala!

Go Grizzlies,

PAYTON PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
Thanks to Hosts and Volunteers for Spring PNO

Many sincere thanks to our hosts, Ed and Renata Seward, for a wonderful night of food, fun, and conversation at Payton's Spring Parents Nights Out on Feb. 28! These informal events give parents and guardians a special chance to get to know one another, even during this bitter winter, and the evening continued the tradition. Be sure to come out for the next PNO in the fall, as we welcome new Grizzly families into the community.

We are looking for a volunteer to take over the planning of Parents Nights Out. Our current party planner is only at Payton for one more year and is looking to train someone to take over this job. It's really easy and fun! If you're interested please email fopcommunications@gmail.com.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT - CLASS OF 2016
Second Annual Payton Junior Book Awards

In the spring of each academic year, a number of universities and colleges award a book to a high school junior who meets criteria set by that academic institution. The criteria include academic achievement, achievement in a particular discipline, ethical concerns, community service, school service, leadership, or intellectual curiosity.

Payton organized its first Junior Book Awards Program last year. Payton faculty met and chose a student who best satisfied the respective institution's criteria. Each institution's representative and a Payton faculty member presented the awards during a junior class assembly. The Book Awards Program was followed by a reception hosted by sophomore parents/guardians. The event was a great success, and offered a year-end celebratory note.

The 2nd annual Payton Junior Book Awards Program is set for May 22, and a brief reception will follow. All juniors will attend the program, and parents and guardians are invited to attend. (Parent/guardians of juniors selected to receive an award will receive notice shortly before the event.)

Please note: receipt of an award should in no way be construed as an indication of the likelihood of admission to the awarding institution.

If you have any questions, please contact Lance Paulsen (Counseling).

Senior Parents:
Book Your Yearbook Ad!

The time for celebrating your child's academic achievement and entrée into adulthood is quickly approaching. Along with graduation, your family will be swept up into the excitement of senior brunch, prom, and other culminating activities.

To show your 2015 graduate how proud you are, please consider surprising your child with an ad in the 2015 Walter Payton yearbook that recognizes the hard work and perseverance that has brought him or her to this glorious moment. There are many designs to choose from, and your sentiments will last forever. All ads will appear in a special section of the yearbook and will be in full color. Ad sizes range from a quarter of a page to a full page.

Please follow the link in the "Senior Information" section of the Walter Payton website to access the order form and templates, but be sure to act soon-a set number of pages are devoted to senior recognition ads, and we will design and include ads on a first come, first served basis. The final deadline for submissions and payments is Mar. 13. Please keep in mind that ads do sell out, and last year we had to turn away ads submitted at the end of the submission period.

Yearbooks are selling at a brisk pace and have tended to sell out in the past (there are approximately 50 left for about 400 who have yet to purchase books). If your senior student has not purchased a yearbook, check with Ms. Nantwi in the business office for availability, and order one before it is too late. Also, if your student did not purchase a book from any of the other school years, archived copies might still be available for purchase

Upcoming Events

There will be a collaborative musical event from our singing Grizzlies, Sounds of Sweetness and Pieces of Perfection, along with alumni at the annual Friends of Payton Gala on Sat. Mar. 28. Be sure to get your tickets and continue supporting our students. It's sure to be a great time had by all!

It is an exciting month in the choir room! Into the Woods opens on Wed. Mar.18. The show will run Mar. 18-21 at 6PM. Don't miss out! This promises to be a remarkable story told by our very own Payton Players/Singers. Ticket prices: $15 adults, $10 students and seniors.

The Payton Concert Band is working diligently on music for the upcoming CPS Band & Orchestra contest on Sat. Apr. 25 and the Spring Concert on Fri. May 15. Our Concert Choir and Intermediate Choir are working tirelessly to represent Payton at the All-City Contest on Sat. Mar. 21. Each group will sing two contrasting pieces and then sight-read. The contest provides excellent feedback for both students and directors and an opportunity to hear other groups. Good luck to all!

On top of all that fun, the Concert Choir and Intermediate Choir will represent Payton at the All-City Choir Festival at Senn High School in late March. The Payton community will be able to hear these selections at the Spring concert.

Congratulations to Arleigh Truesdale (SR) who represented Payton in Peoria in the All-State Choir. She joined 279 other talented singers from around the state and learned six new pieces of music for the occasion.

Senior Athletes Named to IHSA All-Academic Team; Grizzlies Prepare For Spring Action

A special congratulations to our senior scholar-athletes for being chosen for

the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) All-State Academic Team. Brooke Gardner was among 26 students in the state of Illinois to win a spot in the IHSA All-State Academic Team, and Elliott Adams was one of 50 students receiving an Honorable Mention. Required qualifications included a minimum 3.50 GPA on 4.0 scale after their 7th semester, participation in at least two IHSA activities during junior & senior year, and demonstrated outstanding citizenship. "This group is the best of the best," said IHSA Assistant Executive Director Stacey Lambert. "They embody the IHSA's mission, excelling in the classroom, in addition to the multiple sports and activities that they participate in. It really is an accomplishment just to be nominated for this award, and I hope the schools and communities that had winners are as proud of this accomplishment as we are to have these young people represent the IHSA."

Chess: Congratulations to Payton's Chess Team for an outstanding season! It competed in tournaments hosted by Evanston Township High School, DeLaSalle Academy, Benet Academy and Niles North. At the prestigious Glenbard South tournament, the largest tournament outside of the state championship, Payton finished ninth out of 46 high school teams, beating out Whitney Young and Northside Prep. Special kudos to Asher Borstein (soph) for receiving a fourth place medal for his Board 5 play.

Finally, the team of Caeley Harihara (SR), Peter Williamson (SR), Lev Kendrick (SR), Michael May (JR), Asher Borstein (soph), Kit Ng (JR), Nick Xu (JR), Ian Kidwell (JR), Peter Li (JR) and Emory Brigden (JR) finished 35th in the two-day IHSA state chess tournament in Peoria on Feb. 13-14, the largest tournament of its kind in the world with 148 teams and over 1200 high school players competing. Special thanks to Coach Krishnan Harihara and Asst. Coach Steven May.

Girls Track and Field: The team has had a great start to the season even with the many challenges we face including the weather and hallway running! At the Whitney Young 5 Team Invitational on Feb. 14, our 4x400 relay team, Brittany Lundberg (SR), Samantha Foster (SR), Rebecca Peebles (soph) and Alana Chandler (frosh), placed first, with a great time (1:09.09). Placing first in individual events were Samantha Foster (SR) in the 1600m, and Brittany Lundberg (SR) in the 400m. At the De La Salle Meteors Invitational on Feb.21, Payton placed fifth in a meeting fielding 15 teams and our 4x400 and 4x800 relays each garnered second place finishes.

There are many new runners this season and a strong, hard working freshmen class. The team heads to Lockport HS this weekend to see some more competitive teams and then returns for the UHigh Invitational on Mar. 6 at the U of Chicago. Go Grizzlies!

Girls Soccer: Under the direction of Mr. Paul Escobar (Phys. Ed.) the Payton Girls Soccer kicks off on Mon. Mar. 2 with tryouts for all teams. Leading the Grizzlies are a group of seasoned and determined senior girls (below) Expect great things to happen on the pitch this season!

Student Travel Reflections:

Beijing No. 4 Exchange

"The students of Beijing #4 received a warm welcome from Payton, despite the snowy conditions of Super Bowl Sunday! After some rest, some students trekked through the snow to a wonderful Super Bowl party, while others chose to celebrate a little closer to home. Beijing #4 also got to experience a real CPS snow day! Some went sledding for the first time, while others went to the Art Institute. That evening, the whole group enjoyed dinner at the Chinese Consulate with traditional food and some karaoke. The rest of the week was filled with days at Payton, a trip to the Willis Tower, shopping, museums, a tour of University of Chicago, and more. Our Payton families included Beijing students in their typical activities, helping them to gain a greater understanding of daily life in Chicago. Payton students -- and the entire school community -- really opened their worlds up to the Beijing #4 students, giving them an unforgettable American experience. We are looking forward to getting to know the families of our new friends from Beijing."

Taiwan Exchange

"While visiting Chicago, the Taiwanese exchange students immersed themselves in American culture. From Chicago-style hot dogs, to the Willis Tower, to an unexpected snow day, they truly gained the classic Chicago experience. When not involved in excursions, they learned English, living at home with Payton families. We were truly sad to see them return to Taiwan, but can't wait until we reunite in March."

South Africa Trip

"On our trip to South Africa this past month, we enjoyed the intellectual benefits of Johannesburg with a visit to the African Leadership Academy (ALA) and got insights into post-apartheid living with a tour of Soweto township. At the ALA, we had the opportunity to interact with and learn alongside some of the brightest and most promising minds from around the African continent. Our time there was complemented by a visit to Kliptown Youth Program in Soweto, an influential school within an impoverished community attempting to turn childhood "poverty into opportunity." Our journey ended in Cape Town where we explored some of South Africa's most stunning sights, including a hike up Table Mountain and a bike ride along the coast of the Cape of Good Hope. Needless to say, our departure was bittersweet, as many of us would have wanted to stay longer and others promised to come back someday." For updates and photos click here to visit the Payton South Africa blog.

Attention Payton Families:

AFS Chicago (our individual exchange partner) has asked if any of our families would host a male foreign exchange student for either one semester or a full school year. The visiting students speak English well and, like our kids, enjoy music, sports, art, and more! Please consider this wonderful opportunity for your family. If you are interested, please email FOPpresident@gmail.com.
