two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
2015: We're Off and Running

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

I hope this finds you and your family thriving! Payton continues to be a harbinger of dynamic energy, where our 4Cs - courage, compassion, character, and curiosity - are being honed and activated each day:

-The Winter Choir, Band, and inaugural Dance Concerts were very well-performed and well-attended.

-Twenty of our Payton Players and three teachers attended the Illinois High School Theater Festival in Champaign, where students enveloped themselves in a range of workshops.

-Chicago's Lookingglass Theater is so kind to again host a house full of Payton students and families at the Feb. 5 performance of Alice. All proceeds go to support Payton's Visual and Performing Arts Department. Come join us for a wonderful evening!

-Congratulations to Katie Gallegos (Spanish Department) and Mario Ortiz (Counseling Department) who each earned their National Board Certifications.

-Congratulations to Lev Kendrick (SR) for being named an Intel Award semifinalist for his paper: "On the Lower Central Series Quotients of a Quotient of a Free Algebra." He also had his paper "Young Graphs" published in December.

-Congratulations to Camila Giraldo (JR), who has been selected from a city-wide pool of applicants to serve on the CEO's Student Advisory Council. Camila will meet regularly with CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett to address a range of matters of import to students.

-34 cheers to the Payton Debate Teams of Meg Young (SR)/Matt McColgan (JR) and Lenny Brahin (JR)/Luisa Cusick (JR), who have won multiple bids to the National Tournament of Champions!

-Kudos to Katie Gallegos who was successful in securing a $20,000 grant to support summer global travel opportunities for Payton students. Application information is available on the Payton website.

-Payton's hard-working, creative, and athletic Poms Team won the city championship!

Thanks to the many Payton families who are hosting our visitors from Beijing and Taiwan in early February, and bon voyage to our students and faculty who are heading to South Africa to establish a partnership with the African leadership Academy in Johannesburg.

The beehive of activity continues...and it is a joy and honor to be a part of this community.

Thank you for all that you are and for all that you do,

Tim Devine, Principal

A MESSAGE FROM THE LSC

Dear Payton Community Members,

After conducting a rigorous and careful evaluation process that included consideration of input from parents, teachers, staff, students, and community members, Payton's Local School Council (LSC) voted on January 26, 2015 to offer current principal Tim Devine a new four-year contract.  The LSC is thrilled to announce that Mr. Devine enthusiastically accepted that contract offer.  Accordingly, Mr. Devine will continue as Payton's principal through June 30, 2019.

The LSC believes that Mr. Devine has provided Payton with strong and effective school leadership, overseen the growth of Payton's commitment to excellence in education, and inspired Payton students, faculty, and staff with his dedication, compassion, and integrity.

With Mr. Devine's continued guidance, we are confident that Payton will enjoy even greater successes in the years to come.

Sweetness Day

SAVE THE DATE!
Sweetness Day Parent Volunteers Still Needed!

Plans are underway for Payton's 6th Annual Sweetness Day, Wed. Mar. 4. This day of service honors Walter "Sweetness" Payton's strong community involvement and gives our students, teachers, staff, and administrators a way to work closely together on a shared goal outside of their day-to-day routines. Whether it is working with young children, elderly adults, or cancer survivors, Sweetness Day connects the incredible people who spend their days at Payton to the incredible people who live, work, and play beyond our school's walls.

Parents and guardians can be a part of Sweetness Day by helping to identify community needs and service sites ahead of time, or by serving as chaperones on the big day. We need organizations that can accommodate 25 wonderful students for a few hours of service. To participate in this school tradition of community service, please send an email to FOPCommunications@gmail.com, or contact Assistant Principal Michele Washington.

Icon PAYTON ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB
Grizzlies Going Green

The Payton Environmental Club is dedicated to the greening of Payton and inspiring students to go green at home. Its ambitious initiatives include recycling, composting, renewable energy, and art projects using recyclable materials in conjunction with the "Don't Trash That" Club. Throughout the year, the club also hosts workdays that consist of cleaning local parks and the school.

The Environmental Club is responsible for the vermicomposting (worm composting) collection bin in the lunchroom. Food waste collected during lunch is added to the worm bins in Payton's greenhouse. The club also works to educate students on what materials are compostable. In 2010, the Environmental Club received a grant from Climate Cycle, which allowed them to purchase and install solar panels on the southwest corner of the building. The solar panels provide some electricity to the school and we track how much energy is saved each month. Currently club members are making a tree sculpture from used plastic water bottles, which keeps bottles out of the trash. They are also creating cut outs of large predatory birds to tape on the school's atrium windows to prevent small bids from flying into the glass, which had become a big problem at Payton.

Be on the lookout for Environmental Club activities in conjunction with Earth Day this spring. The club meets every Fri. during enrichment in Room 124. For more information contact Ms. Hassan (amulrey@cps.edu). Join the revolution and become part of the Green Grizzlies!

FOP Fundraising

Be a Star in Our Skyline: The FOP Annual Fundraising Gala is fast approaching and we are looking for support in securing items to add to our auction line up. Does your family have a holiday home that you could donate for a week's vacation? How about Bulls, Cubs, Blackhawk, or Sox tickets? Why not ask your favorite restaurant to support Payton by donating a gift certificate? Or ask your gym to donate a month's membership or personal training sessions. Have you seen a great show? Let the theatre know that ticket donations, or gala program ads, will get the word out to the Payton community.  Click here for a donor form, here for ad/sponsor forms.

Invitations to the Stars Under the Skyline Gala will be in the mail soon. Sounds of Sweetness and Pieces of Perfection will kick off the evening. Thank you for your efforts to date and please keep Gala auction needs in mind when out and about.

To volunteer, send an email to FOPfundraising@gmail.com and join us at the next fundraising meeting on Wed. Feb. 4, following the Payton Community Meeting.

Mark your calendar: Sat. Mar. 28 at 6PM at The Montgomery Club!

Boys Bowling:
Grizzly bowlers were on a roll this year, finishing second in their conference and racking up a record of 16-5 in dual meet play. The team advanced to Regionals where it finished 6th, and qualified 3 individuals for Sectional competition: juniors Brandon Taylor, Callen McDonell, and Jack McDonell
In CPS City Championship play, the Grizzlies made it all the way to finals, finishing 4th in the city, improving over last year's 8th place showing.

Coach Jim Kurotsuchi expects even greater things from a young team that also saw strong performances from sophomores: Andrew Annulis, Filip Slusarczyk, and Joe Walsh.
