Parents, guardians, and the public are welcome at Local School Council (LSC) meetings, which are held monthly in the Payton Library at 6PM.

The LSC is an elected body that has three main responsibilities: School Budget, Continuous Improvement Work Plan (formerly SIPAAA), and Principal Evaluation, Retention and Selection.

All are welcome to attend and to make comments during the "Public Comments" portion of the meeting.

For more on the LSC, including a schedule of upcoming meetings, minutes of previous meetings, and a roster of members, please visit the LSC page of the Payton website.

two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

Include a picture or two if you have them; send pictures as .jpg attachments, do not embed them in your Word document.

All submissions are due the 25th of the preceding month. Send them to: fopnewseditor@gmail.com

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Payton in 2014: A Recap

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

Payton is a remarkable place. The data tell a compelling story: we again have been rated the top high school in Illinois by multiple rating entities; we have 7 National Merit Semi-finalists and 3 National Achievement Semi-finalists; we earned a second National Blue Ribbon Award; our fall varsity sports teams made it to the city and/or state playoffs; we have one of the highest percentages of National Board certified teachers in the state; our science and math programs have been rated in the top 50 nationally; our students took well over 1,000 Advanced Placement exams in the spring, with a supra-majority of the students earning 3+ on the exams; our class of 2014 earned over $16 million in collegiate scholarships; and, in the past few years, Payton students have availed themselves of opportunities to travel with Payton teachers on 23 trips abroad.

The data is just part of a dynamic story - it is the product of talented students, an expert faculty, and wonderfully-supportive families. As for the parents...thank you! First, for sharing your children with us. It is our joy to have the opportunity to help their evolutions from childhood to young adulthood. And thank you for all that you do to make Payton such a wonderfully vibrant place of teaching and learning. Specifically, thank you one and all for your very generous financial support during the Fall Appeal, the accumulated funds will support many important components of Payton's programs. And thank you, too, for the time and thoughtfulness so many of you have given by assisting with courses, seminars, enrichments, athletic and extracurricular events, main office activities, and special events.  Your efforts are important, noticed, well-received, and, frankly, necessary to the ongoing health of our Payton community.  Thank you!.

I encourage you to continue to put your fingerprints all over the school as we carry on in our efforts to enhance and optimize the Payton experience.

Go Grizzlies!

Present at AAS

National Meeting

Greetings Payton Families,

We are Payton's astronomy research team. We are collaborating with two other schools: Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein, Illinois and Breck School in Minneapolis, Minnesota on an astronomy research project. So far we have gone through over 800 different galaxies in search of black holes. This has been a long and tedious task, but it gave insight into what it is like for actual astronomers. We are looking forward to presenting our findings at the 224th American Astronomical Society meeting that will be held in Seattle, Washington from Jan. 5-8, 2015. This meeting will allow us to make many new connections with astronomers who will assist in expanding our knowledge. However, before we are able to proceed towards our goal, we will need your help in funding our trip. The majority of the costs will be used for our transportation and hotel fees. We are hoping to gather up $5,500 for our trip.

We have a very diverse team that consists of a total of 16 students whom vary from freshmen to seniors. A group of 6 students will be going to the meeting to represent the entire team. Four of the 6 students that are going are now seniors. This will be the last year in which they will be able to represent Payton at the AAS meeting. Our team is very eager to enable these 6 students to show how much effort they have put into their project. Presenting this project may guide them to doing great things in the future. We humbly request your assistance in helping these students fulfill their hopes in attending the meeting. You can help fund Payton's team by contributing through Donors Choose. Any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your support!

Icon CLUBS AND TEAMS
Artists Anonymous
Reported with the help of Lena White (SR)

Artists Anonymous, the Payton art club, has been busy learning about screen printing, preparing for the Burned art show, and holding open studio time for aspiring artists. In order to screen print the club has been stretching their own screens. Students use an L-shaped tool that fits into the groove of a frame and a hammer to pound a damp rope into place, which will keep the screen taut. Although it has been rather loud in the art room, the students have found it very enjoyable to learn about the process used to make everything from graphic t-shirts to poster designs.

In preparation for the quarterly art show, Burned, everyone in art club wrote a worry or fear on a piece of paper and then the group safely did a cathartic burn of them outside.  Many of the members of Artists Anonymous are working on pieces for this show during open studio time. Other members of the club are working on personal artwork or a current project from art class during this time.

The club is also accepting artwork for its next show, to be held in early Jan. The theme for this show is Space. It welcomes submissions of any finished work, including pieces from art classes in or outside of school. Students can bring submissions to Ms. Guizzetti's room.

Presidents of Artist Anonymous, Maisie Anrod (SR) and Ann Rogers (SR), say that the 2014-2015 school year has had a great start in the art department! The club meets during enrichment period Mon., 2:40 - 3:30PM. Students interested joining the art club can contact Ms. Guizzetti (pguizzetti@cps.edu) for more information.
