A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The Journey of Our Children

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

Two notes of thanks. First, for all you do to support your child(ren). Being a parent is a life-fulfilling, important labor of love. It is also a quite busy existence, and can come with peaks and valleys. Thank you for being omnipresent ballast in your child's life and for providing them unconditional love and support. Thank you for teaching them many values and cultivating their habits so that they can continue to be good and purposeful people. And second, thanks for all that you do to support other people's children. Every day I see Payton parents doing selfless deeds: carpooling to make commutes a bit easier for everyone, cheering on our athletic and academic teams, chaperoning trips, having students over to your home after school or on weekends to study or hang out - I know they are depleting your cupboards when they are at your home. So thank you for nourishing them, editing college essays, providing needed encouragement and support with hugs and high-fives, volunteering with FOP or PIE or Payton Boosters or the Payton Alumni Association or Open House, ad infinitum. Yep. It takes a village, and we have a special one in Grizzlyville. Thank you!

On this theme of supporting children...adolescence is a dynamic time in a person's life. When students enters high school, they are children; four years later, they emerge as young women and young men. The psychological and physical transformations that occur in adolescence are notable. There is excitement that comes with adolescence (e.g. increased autonomy and freedom, a broadening worldview and the expansion and deepening of relationships, becoming more skillful with varied areas of life, listening to new muses). There are also moments of questioning, trepidation and struggle, sense of meaning and epistemic questioning, personal identification and making social comparisons. The students at Payton are bright...very bright. We currently have and continue to develop academic programs to meet these wonderful needs and interests of our students. We adults - families and educators - should, at the same time, caution ourselves for, while our students are academically-advanced, their social and emotional intelligence does not always parallel their current academic development. Our students are adolescents. They have large, unanswered questions about life. Many of these are expected questions, but sometimes, a student may be beset with more intractable questions or physical and/or psychological issues that can manifest themselves in negative, concerning ways. So, I ask this: if your child encounters a challenge with a particular course, please reach out directly to the teacher for discussion and solutions (all of our teachers' e-mail addresses are posted on our website). If your child encounters larger issues that are burdening their mindset or bodies, I encourage you to reach out to their Counselor. We have exceptional counselors who are poised to work with you and your child to find resources that will aid in their health and growth. Our counselors are:

Lance Paulsen (lrpaulsen@cps.edu)

Sara Diaz (srdiaz@cps.edu)

Mario Ortiz (mgortiz5@cps.edu)

Casey Bowles (mbowles1@cps.edu)

Ashley Greer (sagreer@cps.edu)

I would place my own child's health and well-being in the hands of any of these persons. Please let them know if they can be helpful. More broadly, the faculty is focusing quite a bit of thought and energy this year on developing resilience and a growth-oriented mindset within our students. Towards these ends, we recently surveyed students on these topics so we could have a sharper understanding of their sense of and practices with resilience and growth oriented versus fixed mindsets. After analysis of this and other information, the faculty will focus on enhancing or developing instructional strategies that promote student resilience and growth mindset. The goal of this work is to help students develop a mindset that will serve them well academically, socially, and emotionally.

With sincere appreciation for all you do to be a part of the lifeblood of Payton,

PROMOTING HEALTHY LIVES

Payton's Annual Wellness Fair

The Payton Wellness Council is proud to be putting on the sixth annual Payton Wellness Fair for the students on Fri. Feb.6 in the Atrium from 9:45AM until 1PM.

One of the goals is to expose the students to a broad array of what wellness is - eating well and exercising for a healthy body, developing coping strategies for sound emotions, caring for the environment, practicing safe driving, maintaining good hygiene, and engaging in healthy relationships.

The response each year from both the students and the school administration has been extremely enthusiastic. If you have an interest in being one of our health providers or helping plan and work the fair, please contact parent Susan Stearn at slstearn@gmail.com or Health and Athletic Director Arlene Bertoni at ambertoni@cps.edu. We hope you'll be part of this exciting event!

Fundraising News

Annual Appeal - Raise $100,000 to receive $50,000 in matching funds
!

The Annual Appeal is FOP's only fall fundraiser. FOP is tasked with raising money to support the current administration, teachers, and students. This year, unlike previous years, FOP will not just supplement other discretionary dollars, but will provide virtually the only unrestricted dollars the school will have to spend. These funds are critical and support Payton's stellar educational programs and culture. If we raise $100,000 by Dec. 31, we will receive a $50,000 matching gift from generous families. To date, we have raised $65,000. Let's keep up the momentum! If you have donated already, thank you. If you haven't donated yet, please click here  to donate now. Or mail your check to FOP, 1034 N. Wells St., Chicago, IL 60610. If you have any questions, please email us.

Put on Your Dancing Shoes -The Annual Payton Spring Gala will be held on Sat. Mar. 28 at The Montgomery Club. Please consider the ways

in which your family can donate its time, talent, or treasure. The Gala will feature online and silent auctions, a raffle and a paddle raise. In addition, we will print a program book featuring advertisements available for purchase by our supporters. There are many ways (big and small) to be involved. With your support, Payton can continue providing students with the essential resources, services, and supplies they need to excel in high school, college and beyond. Email Gala co-chairs Cyndy Lyons or Sheila O'Sullivan volunteer and support this extremely important common cause.

Teacher Wish List - Make our teachers' wishes come true.

We need volunteers to help staff the Wish List Table on Report Card Day, Thurs. Nov. 13. If you can work a one-hour shift, please email FOP.   Thanks to parents and guardians who purchased items on Curriculum Night. We still have many more items to fund. Please stop by and donate after you pick up your student's report card.

Please Come to the Next Meeting - Nov. 5 at 7PM in the Library immediately following the Payton Community Meeting with Mr. Devine.

THE GENEROUS CHICAGO COMMUNITY
Greenhouse (Seminar & Enrichment) Enriched!

Each Friday, the enrichment cares for the plants by watering, fertilizing, pruning, and basically nurturing. My students also foster out appropriate plants to teacher classrooms to willing teachers. As plants decline in the classrooms, we reclaim them for revitalization in the greenhouse, substituting unhappy plants with fresh plants.

The Greenhouse Enrichment and Seminar, and Payton students and faculty,  would like to thank Mike Duttge at Fiore Nursery and Landscape Supply for his generous donation of beautiful tropical plants. Thank you also to parent Agnes Stafford of Pradel Garden Designs for the donation of her time and vehicle to deliver the dozens of plants that will brighten up the greenhouse, common areas, and classrooms at Payton.

This donation has brightened the day of many excited teachers, and we are now proud owners of huge palms, gorgeous gardenias, elephant ears, countless ferns and succulents, and more. This, combined with our existing collection of orchids will be certain to bring some color and life to the Payton community.

Meet Teacher Logo NEW PAYTON FACULTY
Physical Education:
Ms. Elisa Foshay

Ms. Elisa Foshay (P.E.) has joined the Payton team to teach dance. This program is brand new to Payton and provides juniors and seniors with an opportunity to explore a new realm of the performing arts. Ms. Foshay focuses on a concept-based approach to dance, observing how body, movement, space, and time each contribute to the expression of dance.

Ms. Foshay also teaches a seminar on Mindfulness Through Movement, which focuses on the use of meditation and contemplation in conjunction with movement. The students will explore Chi Gong, Yoga, Tai Chi, and other forms of movement-based meditation.

Before coming to Payton, Ms. Foshay taught dance in several programs. She worked as a teaching artist, visiting schools for several weeks at a time. She worked as an instructor and administrator for the Hubbard Street Dance Company. Teaching at Payton on a part-time basis, Ms. Foshay also works with the CPS Advanced Arts Program at Gallery 37. This program offers two years of honors and AP instruction in several art mediums for CPS high school students.

Ms. Foshay earned her undergraduate degree in dance from Columbia College. She recently she earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Dance and a teaching license from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Ms. Foshay is excited to be back in the Chicago area and enjoys being at Payton. Even though dance is a new offering at Payton, it is off to a tremendous start with approximately 100 students enrolled in the program.

Beyond her work with Payton and CPS, Ms. Foshay still works with Hubbard Street Dance and with the Synapse Arts Collective. She also works with Ingenuity, a program to enhance fine arts education throughout CPS. When Ms. Foshay is not busy teaching or performing dance, she has a six-month old daughter, Aiko, to keep her on her toes!

April 2009 - i ching CHINA EXCHANGE FUNDRAISER

Take a Chinatown Tour!

Jimmy D. Lee, a man with great connections in the Chinatown community in Chicago, will lead an incredible tour, exploring the secrets of Chinatown. The tour consists of walking through Chinatown, and sampling the local delicacies and meals that have made Chicago's Chinatown so famous. The tour includes stories and perspectives from special guests and community leaders. These perspectives and secrets, known only by Chinatown locals, will help you explore an important part of Chicago in a way you've never done before.

An additional perk of the tour is that it will benefit Payton students preparing for their exchange trip to China. This school year, 25 of our students will participate in the Chinese exchange program. They will host students from Beijing in Feb., and show them around our beautiful city. In the spring, Payton students will do the same in Beijing, as they live with their Chinese students' families, and also travel to Shanghai. All of the proceeds from Mr. Lee's Chinatown tour will go to Payton's exchange trip fund, and allow students to participate in exciting and educational activities in Chicago and China. The tour is $34 per person. Bring the whole family and see Chinatown as you've never seen it before!

CLUBS AND TEAMS
A Collaborative Competitor: Payton/Jones Girls Swim Team
Reported with the help of Lena White (SR)

Heading into the City Championships, "A lot of girls are getting their personal best times," says Head Coach Mac Varilla. And they're getting their best times "swimming tired... We are really working them hard and they are meeting the challenge."

The 2014-15 Payton/Jones Girls Swim Team boasts a competitive record as well as unprecedented expansion and coaching expertise. "When I started coaching in 2011, we had about 15 girls - a combined Jones and Payton team. We're topping a combined school team of 40 girls this year," Varilla says. In addition, the team has added assistant coaches Lauren Zillmer, a sprint specialist; Michael Borge, as diving coach; and Nick Johnston, focusing on technical stroke. This year included the launch of a 6-girl diving team into competition. In addition to offering students more variety in athletic competitions, the diving group adds to the swim team's bottom line by providing an additional score. Much like the swim team, the diving group is comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores, led by a few outstanding seniors."The seniors have really led the way to seeding a strong, competitive swim program. Their dedication and growth is really remarkable and has set the stage for the up-and-coming girls to excel and further develop our team," said Varilla.

"We are really working them hard and they are meeting the challenge."  The Payton/Jones Swim Team completes its season on Nov. 8 & 9, at the City Championships, where it hopes to improve over its 4th place showing last year. "We are expecting high individual scoring from the swimmers and we're looking to our freshman to place in the top three."

Visit Payton/Jones Lady Eagles for updates and information.

Payton Logo COUNSELING CORNER
The Road to College

It's been a very busy fall in the Payton counseling office. College application season is in full swing for the seniors and over 100 college admission representatives have stopped by to visit with interested juniors and seniors. The department has held high school and college planning events for freshmen and senior parents in addition to the college financial aid night on Oct. 22. Juniors took the PSAT on Oct. 15. The junior parent college planning night will take place Mon. Dec. 1 at 6:30PM in the Recital Hall.

Our two new counselors, Ashley Greer and Casey Bowles, have had an enjoyable, if busy, start to the year and we're glad to have them on the team. As we turn the calendar to November and December, the counseling staff will be getting to know the freshmen during individual meetings and by engaging students in a variety of academic, social-emotional, and college planning programs during the enrichment period.

Upcoming Events:

Nov. 19 after seminars: Practice ACT for Juniors

Dec. 1 at 6:30PM: College Planning for Junior Parents

Dec. 19 after seminars: 5th Annual Alumni College Fair

Grizzlies on the
Prowl in Post Season Play

Girls Golf: Champions again! In its 8th year, the Girls Golf Team collected its 7th City Championship and fielded the City's Individual champion for the 6th year. This year's inheritors of the dynasty, the 2014 Championship team, are Brooke Gardner (SR), Chloe Wilson (SR), Izabel Cedeņo (JR), Caroline Rooney (SR), Emily Martin (JR) and Katie Nelson (SR). The next closest competitor was 33 strokes away.Izabel Cedeņo is the reigning 2014 City Champion, hitting a 6 over 41 to capture the title. The team placed 4th at Regionals, with Gardner, Wilson, and Cedeņo advancing to State Sectionals. Congratulations on another great year! (If you would like to join the Championship Culture please contact, Coach Troy at thomasetroy@gmail.com, please include a parent email.

Boys Softball: What a season! Led by Coach Valerie Gemskie and Alumni Coach Scott Potter, the team finished with a 26-5 record (playing games almost every day for 5 weeks), beating Northside, Whitney Young, Lane, Marshall, Phoenix, Juarez, and Lincoln Park, among others. The team easily blew past Washington in the semi-finals of the City Championship on Oct. 7., but lost to first seed Taft in the nail-biting championship game. Congratulations to this A-1 team, with a special nod to captains Ubaldo Castillo (SR), George Lopez (SR) and Tony Ramirez (SR).

Girls Tennis: Following a regular season of highs and lows, the Grizzlies sent eight players to the City Individual Championships, and took second or third place in each event. First singles player Jessie Mitchell (Frosh) and the first doubles team of seniors Caeley Harihara and Sara Reilly each captured second place. Bringing home third place honors were second singles player Anikka Villegas (SR), second doubles duo Kira Gallancy (SR) and Stephanie Senanou (SR), and third doubles players Laura Goralka (JR) and Simone Miklosi (JR). The squad then faced off against the City's toughest teams in the CPS Team Championships, and captured third place. Sectional competition followed, with Mitchell advancing to the IHSA State Championships where she made it past the first round. It's been another great year for the Grizzlie Girls. For the six graduating seniors, who all toughed it out these last three seasons, it's been an amazing journey.

Football: After a rocky start this year, the Grizzlies picked up some momentum following its homecoming win against Harper, then a string of victories over Robeson, Collins Academy, and Austin Poly. With a 4-1 conference record, Payton heads into the Division 4A playoffs to face undefeated Lutheran High in Rockford on Halloween. Let's be the danger, Grizzlies!

Boys Soccer: The varsity team has plenty to celebrate this fall, winning its conference, posting zero losses, five victories and two draws. Individual achievements are also being celebrated as seniors Aaron Kamel, Arman Khaghani, and Will Silberg received City All-Conference honors, and seniors Aaron Kamel, Ross Sinar and Jean-Stephane Naas were named City All-Academic. The Grizzlies are also proud to recognize the outstanding achievement of Jose Padilla (SR), who was named All Sectional by the Illinois State High School Soccer Association. The team marked its first post-season victory in state playoffs on Oct. 21 beating UIC Charter School 6-3. Arman Khaghani had an especially good game, scoring a "hat trick" - three goals in a single game!

Girls Cross Country: Following their strong performance at the City Championships where the team finished 5th, the girls competed in the IHSA Regionals at Deerfield H.S. and captured 4th place honors. The varsity runners finished as follows: Claire Goldman (soph) (19:46), Madeline Nash (SR)(21:03), Samantha Helffrich (frosh) (21:24), Samantha Foster (SR) (21:28), Elizabeth Walsh (SR) (21:36), Emma Worrell (frosh) (21:38), and Esha Kular (soph) (23:01). The team advanced to Sectionals and, at press time, placed 4th! The seven girls now advance to compete at the IHSA State Finals on Nov. 8. Congratulations, and Go Grizzlies!

Boys Cross Country:
After a cold and rainy run at City Championships, the boys moved on to Regionals where the team placed 3rd. Finishing runners clocked in as follows: Wesley Chan (SR) (16:19), Elliot Adams (SR) (17:10), Sam LaSota (SR) (17:11), Sam Detmer (JR) (17:24), Gabe Rojas (SR) (17:26), Ryan Harrington (SR) (18:06), and Isaac Schwartz (SR) (18:31). The fine performance earned them a spot at Sectionals, where they placed 4th. The varsity runners advance to State Finals in Peoria on Nov. 8. Well done!

Girls Volleyball:

After another winning season, capped by two successive wins over Wells High School and a victory over Cristo Rey for the regional championship, the Lady Grizzlies are seeded third in their Sectional division and move forward next week to battle for another trip to the IHSA State Championship.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
PIE Endowment Fund

Payton Initiative for Education (PIE) is a non-profit organization designed to build and manage an endowment fund ensuring the legacy of academic excellence at Payton. As the endowment grows, the income generated will be used to help fund programs that make our school great. NEXT MEETING ON NOV. 10
Local School Council
(LSC)

On Oct. 6. the Local School Council met and heard reports from the Special Education and Counseling departments. One of the highlights from the Special Education department is that Payton's Best Buddies program was selected as the Illinois chapter of the year.  The Counseling department shared statistics on the wide range of colleges and universities the class of 2014 is attending - schools large and small, across the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Devine and Mr. Karafiol presented the yearly "state of the school" report. The presentation contained lots of interesting information and will be linked on wpcp.org. In addition to departmental reports, the LSC voted to expand the part-time counselor position into a full-time position to help meet the needs of Payton students.

This year, the LSC will be conduct an additional principal evaluation for the purpose of Principal Contract renewal. Parent, guardian, and student input is a very important part of this process.  Please keep your eyes open for a survey.

Please join us at the next meeting on Nov. 10 at 6:00PM in the library.
