fop fundraising is

a year-round effort

The Friends of Payton needs your valuable donations to support Payton's educational mission There are three ways to do it:

1. Mail a check payable to FOP at 1034 N. Wells St., Chicago, IL 60610

2. Drop a check into the FOP box in the school office. Make it payable to FOP.

3. Contribute online via credit card by clicking the donate button on Payton's homepage. All contributions are tax deductible and all amounts are equally appreciated.

lsc meetings are
 open, next is 8/18

Parents, guardians, and the public are welcome at Local School Council (LSC) meetings, which are held monthly in the Payton Library at 6PM.

The LSC is an elected body that has three main responsibilities: School Budget, Continuous Improvement Work Plan (formerly SIPAAA), and Principal Evaluation, Retention and Selection.

All are welcome to attend and to make comments during the "Public Comments" portion of the meeting.

For more on the LSC, including a schedule of upcoming meetings, minutes of previous meetings, and a roster of members, please visit the LSC page of the Payton website.

two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

share stories and ideas for this newsletter

Please send us current Payton news to share with other Payton families. Here are the submission guidelines:

Less is more -- 200 words or less works best in an e-newsletter. If that's not enough room to tell the whole story, include a phone number, email address, or web link to give our readers more details. Send text as a Word attachment or type it into the body of your email.

Include a picture or two if you have them; send pictures as .jpg attachments, do not embed them in your Word document.

All submissions are due the 25th of the preceding month. Send them to: fopnewseditor@gmail.com

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Preparing for 2014-2015 and Payton's Expansion

Dear Payton Parents & Guardians,

I hope/trust that summer has greeted you and your family well; that time for new adventures and rejuvenation are part of your daily modus operandi.

Activities at 1034 N. Wells continue. We have a stellar group of incoming freshmen who are presently ensconced in the Algebra I, Semester II program, orientation/registration/Freshmen connections will be held in mid-August, and we are hosting a number of summer programs for many organizations. We are also learning about the many, unique activities that our students have delved into around the city/country/world.

Plans for the west building also continue. Currently, they include the addition of:

*13 classrooms

*2 spaces for Special Education programs

*A music practice studio

*An art room

*A café

*A black box theater

*A department office

*A dance studio

*A full-sized gymnasium

*A fitness center

*Some storage spaces

This space will allow us to enhance and expand our educational programs. We anticipate that ground will be broken in early-September. A fuller presentation of the plans and purposes will be made when we all return in September.

Please let us know if we can be helpful in any way.

Go Grizzlies!

National Honor Society
Fall Book Drive

The National Honor Society is having a book and school supply drive starting in September. We are asking for books to be age appropriate for 5 to 14 year olds. All of the books will help build a library for Real Men Read, which is a program that has adults of different backgrounds read to elementary students to promote literacy. Their goal is to show that reading is cool no matter what age you are. All of the school supplies will go to KIPP Ascend Primary School, which has many families that do not have the money to buy school supplies for their children. When you are doing summer cleaning, and buying school books and supplies for this coming year, please don't forget about the National Honor Society's book and school supply drive and all the students we can help together.

Friends of Payton Financial Review of 2013 - 2014

Thanks to the generous Payton community, Friends of Payton had another successful fundraising year exceeding last year's total income by 26%. We are delighted to report that all of the income categories showed increases from previous years, thanks to our dedicated community. In addition, FOP Board Members continue to work diligently to minimize the fundraising and FOP costs (down by 25% from last year). This means more funds were available to support the needs of the students and teachers.

The Revenue/Expense chart is a breakdown of the fundraising efforts. The majority of the revenue continues to come from the Gala; however, the Annual Appeal efforts increased by 42% from last year. The Expenses by Type graphic explains how the funds were allocated for the needs of the school as determined by Payton's Leadership Team.

STUDENT HONORS & AWARDS
First Junior Book Award Program is Well Received

On May 28, the class of 2015 and many parents/guardians gathered for the first annual Payton Junior Book Award Program. Book awards were presented to 30 members of the junior class, each selected by the Payton faculty as best satisfying the criteria of the sponsoring university and college, for example, for academic achievement, community service, school service, leadership, or intellectual curiosity. The book award presenters included institutions' representatives and Payton faculty members. A brief reception followed courtesy of a committee of sophomore parents. The book award program was enjoyed by all. The second annual Program will occur in May 2015 for the Class of 2016. Congratulations to this year's awardees. A list of the students and the participating colleges can be found here.

Sailing Team: Summer
Tryouts & Deadlines

The Payton Sailing Team had a successful 2013-2014 season.  Congratulations to all sailors.

The team sails out of Belmont Harbor and competes in both a fall and a spring season. It is a coed team with three levels of participation: the frosh/soph development team, the junior varsity team and the varsity team.  All three levels are looking for sailors. Scholarship funding is available for any sailor who might need it.

Tryouts for new sailors will be held on Aug. 26 and 27 at 3:30PM at Belmont Harbor. Interested students need to bring signed waivers and medical forms, available at www.chicagoyachtclub.org. Participants will also need closed-toe shoes and a life jacket if you have access to one. Returning sailors must sign up for the fall season by Aug.15. For more information, or to sign up for the fall season, visit the Chicago Yacht Club website by clicking here. You may also contact Cathy Nardi at gastevich@msn.com for additional information.

VOLUNTEER YOUR TALENTS

Parents Pass The Word Looking for Volunteers

Interested in volunteering on the Parent Pass The Word newsletter team? It is a great way to learn about the school and help inform the Payton community about programs, events, teams, clubs and all the things that make Payton a vibrant place.

We are looking for people to write articles, take pictures at Payton events, and to lend us their graphics skills. We publish just one issue a month so your time commitment will be minimal - generally just a few hours per month. If you are interested in volunteering on the newsletter, contact Jeanne Lamar at fopnewseditor@gmail.com.
