Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Grizzlies Cut a Swath
Through Chicago's Winter

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

I am awestruck by the students, faculty, and families of Payton. What a remarkable bunch. The litany of their interests and talents are noteworthy. In the span of just a few weeks so much has been accomplished:

International Travel: Students (and their families...thank you!) hosted visitors from our sister schools in Buenos Aires and Beijing. Two teachers will travel to Russia over Spring Break to establish a sister school relationship with a school in Moscow or St. Petersburg.

Community Service: Advisories made final preparations for Sweetness Day, while hundreds of our students participated in the Wellness Fair. Thanks to so many parents for chaperoning and sponsoring booths!

Academic and Athletic Honors: Seven seniors were named National Merit Finalists and 1 was named a National Achievement Finalist; 4 of our students placed in the top 10 of the Chicago Regional Bridge Building Contest, taking 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 9th place honors; 46 students participated in the American Math Contest; our student-athletes competed in 9 playoff series; and Payton was recently nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School.

Performing Arts: Payton Players, their families, and faculty members enjoyed a thrilling night at Lookingglass Theater watching a special presentation of The Little Prince; the Payton and Northside Choirs joined in what we hope to be the first annual combined concert choir in our Recital Hall...the same locale, where a few weeks earlier, our musicians performed Broadway Gems.

Faculty Honors & Activities: Michael Caines (Math) was cited as an exceptional educator by MIT; Valerie Gemskie (Latin) earned two sizeable grants to support our students' trip to Italy; Jackie Barge (Science) took 4 students to Washington, D.C. to present a poster at the annual NASA conference; the Social Studies Department hosted the History Fair (with many parents serving as judges).

Newly Admitted Students: And in a few days, we will welcome the class of 2018, the strongest incoming freshman class in the city of Chicago.

It is an honor to be among such talent.Thank you for being a seminal part of the Payton experience.

A few items of a more administrative nature:

- 2014-2015 Calendar: CPS has settled on a calendar for the upcoming academic year. We will develop and publish the Payton calendar as soon we receive the go ahead from central office.

- New Building: Plans for the new building on the west side of campus continue to go through iterative phases. We will share when plans have more clarity and finality.

- 4-year PE requirement: We are still receiving guidance from central office on our many questions regarding the new 4-year PE policy. We will email students and parents with more details about the requirements and potential exemptions to this state law as we start the programming process in the coming weeks.

I hope this finds you well!

CLUBS & TEAMS
Payton Bowling
Comes Out Strong

The Payton Boys Bowling team established itself as a serious competitor this year, earning the respect of all opponents. Payton plays in a strong conference that includes Taft, Von Stueben, Lane, Amundsen, and Northside. The Grizzly team's success this year is a testament to the inspiring leadership of new Coach Jim Kurotsuchi, returning coach Eric Kuchii, and the hard work and commitment of every team member.

Early in the season the team fought Taft, conference rival and 2013 conference winner in a dramatic series at Habettler Bowl. Payton easily took the first game and forced Taft to battle for the second. It took a 300 game by a Taft player to keep Payton from taking the third game, but the die was cast. Payton defeated the remainder of its conference rivals in season play, finishing second behind Taft. The team moved on to sectionals and advanced to City finals where it placed 8th out of 60 teams. The high team single game score was 975 - a Payton record! Seniors Sammie Coleman and Will Jackson, and sophomores Brandon Taylor and Callen McDonell advanced to state singles play on Jan. 25, with Callen McDonell bowling a 232 game to place 4th out of 60 bowlers at the end of the first game. The fifth team bowler throughout the season, Jack McDonell (soph), had a 608 high series for the team and a 235 high game for the team in season play. Congratulations to the starting five (pictured below) and the rest of this great team: seniors Aaron Fogelson and Jacob McCarthy, sophomores Max Brady and Kit Ng, and freshmen Filip Slusarczyk, Andrew Annulis, and Rob Brutvan.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
Payton Welcomes China Exchange; Announces Global Trips for 2014-2015

China Exchange and Host Reflections:

Payton welcomed our friends from Beijing High School No. Four who arrived in Chicago on Feb. 1. During their week in Chicago, BHSF students visited museums and cultural locations, alone and with their Payton partners. Most memorably, they and their host students got the full Chicago treatment at Ed Debevic's restaurant, bowled at 10Pin Bowling Lounge, dined at the Chinese Consulate, saw a Blue Man Group show, cooked Chinese dumplings at a host parent's house (pictured below), and made lasting friendships with Payton students and families. From Mar. 15-24, our 16 Payton globe trotters will travel to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong to expand their horizons. Here are some reflections on their hosting week experiences:

My favorite experience with the Beijing students was on the first day of their arrival when we were all absorbed in a game of capture the flag, and throughout the week we had competitive snowball fights while slipping on ice and laughing it off. -Wendy Wu (JR)

If I had to pick three words that describe my experience on the trip they would be: eye-opening, exciting, and memorable. -Maggie Ball (JR)

My most memorable experience with my student was taco night at home with my family because we had the chance to talk in a comfortable setting and learn about her life at home while she was introduced to tacos! -Lizzie Walsh (JR)

I will never forget the time when my student and I played Just Dance together. We laughed a lot and it was so much fun to loosen up and dance to familiar songs. -Olivia Piazza (JR)

I remember when the whole group was anxious to get paint splashed on them at the Blue Man group show. -Kenny Lee (SR)

I think my favorite part of this experience was when my student and I went walking around Navy Pier. Despite being really cold out, I think it was nice to show her how pretty Chicago can look in the winter. -Anastasiya Holenchuk (soph)

After the students first arrived we all went back to school and began to introduce ourselves. We got along so naturally that all of my worries vanished and we just had fun. - Gabe Galeerd (JR)

My mom and I will often comment on how we miss our girls and how funny they were - the way Tina would make little cute noises or exasperated sighs in reaction to everything, or Cai's adorable laugh and eager nod - she was always so excited about everything and easygoing. I really just can't wait to see them again! -Grace Vargas (JR)

Payton's '14-'15 Trips & Exchanges:

Payton's Global Connections envisions that every student, regardless of socioeconomic status, will be able to travel to explore the world, weigh perspectives, connect ideas, and be an active leader in constructing a positive future. Next academic year Payton students will have the opportunity to travel with their amazing Payton faculty on school-wide student exchanges to Beijing, China; St. Petersburg or Moscow, Russia; and, Prague, Czech Republic. Language-specific student exchanges include Paris, France for French students and Taipei, Taiwan for Chinese students. Spanish students can participate in a language immersion trip to Oaxaca, Mexico.

Payton students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Global Summer Program with Chicago, which involves the opportunity to host Chinese students in their homes, intensive academic learning, and culture adventure activities.

Applications for Global Connections programs are due by Fri. Mar. 14 at 3:30PM. Click here to visit the Global Connections program online.

Icon PAYTON STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
Association of Latin American Students: Exploring Diversity While Serving the Community

Payton's Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) provides information concerning Latinos but also gives members volunteer opportunities. Last year ALAS students participated in Comcast Cares Day and helped clean up the Pilsen community. ALAS members helped a church prepare a home with several rooms for immigrants to stay in until they can take care of themselves. This church helps immigrants start their lives because they often come to the U.S. with nothing. ALAS students went to LaSalle Elementary School to provide an activity booth for the school's Posadas Night (a traditional Latino celebration). ALAS also helps in the Payton school community; this school year it held its first annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. The money raised will be used to purchase a laptop to help a deserving Latino student's academic career.

ALAS has participated in Payton's International Night for many years. Its members perform a dance derived from the cultures of various Latino countries. Members bring food dishes to share, and it hosts an activity booth. According to the group's president, Isaly Palacios(SR), "As officers of ALAS we try to discuss current issues as well as topics members suggest. We, as well as many other ethnicities, deal with stereotypes so we officers have our members discuss certain situations and help them to understand how to handle it. Other topics we discussed this year were what it meant to be an American and the evolution of Latino music."

Members of ALAS say:

ALAS is one of the most lively clubs here at Payton and that has to do with the great interactive activities along with the unique personalities of my peers as we all learn about various Hispanic issues and cultures. -Mariah Mata (SR)

For me it is a great and fun club and allows me to be immersed in Latin American culture. The ALAS club makes me feel welcomed and has enhanced my high school experience. And did I mention the food ?!? -Kaylor Weaver (soph)

ALAS provides me with the opportunity to experience another culture without having to travel. -Taylor Stewart (soph)

What makes ALAS unique is the people it attracts. ALAS members come from many different ethnicities, such as African American, Caucasian, Asian. This diversity helps ALAS members see many sides to an issue, and it helps Latinos understand that their situation may not be so different than that of other ethnic groups. Palacios also notes, "ALAS is also very successful because of Ms. Gonzalez. She is the club's sponsor and plays in active role in the club. She makes sure ALAS is a good environment for everyone and gives her own input into discussions. She truly believes in the club's mission."

On Feb. 21 the Payton Concert Choir joined forces with the Northside College Prep Concert Choir presenting The Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. It was a stunning performance exemplifying the musical transition from the Romantic era to the Impressionistic. Student soloists from Payton included Ali Bernardini (JR), Raphael Laden-Guindon (JR), and Nick Rin-Laures (JR), with Will Jackson (SR) and Mathias Sheppard (frosh) as instrumental accompanists.

A warm welcome to Ms. Kristen Hjelmaas, from Vandercook College who is student teaching in the Music Department!

Upcoming Musical Events

Sounds of Sweetness will participate in the Chicago A Capella Youth Choral Festival at Logan Center for the Arts on Sat. Mar. 1. The day of workshops and coaching concludes with a concert at 5PM open to the public. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

The Navy Band Great Lakes group, "Liberty Call Jazz Band," will perform for students on Wed. Mar. 26 in the Recital Hall after seminars.

The Payton Concert Choir will participate in the All City Choral Festival at Senn High School on Sat. Apr. 5. It will present a movement from the Vivaldi Gloria Cum Santo Spiritu and a new choral work by Dan Forest, Entreat Me Not to Leave You, with an additional sight-reading piece. Good luck to all!

Unfortunately, the Payton Concert Band will not participate in the CPS Band & Orchestra Festival because of a CPS schedule change. The new date, Sat. May 10 is the day after the scheduled Spring Concert. However, Dr. Charles T. Menghini, the president of Vandercook College of Music, will hold a special clinic for the Concert Band in lieu of the competition.

Mark your calendars for Thurs. May 22, at 7PM in the Recital Hall for the Spring Choral Concert featuring all Payton choirs! Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.

Don't forget Fri. May 9 is the Spring Band Concert!

End of Year Thank You Banner PAYTON PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
Thanks for a Great Evening

A big thank you to Ingrid Petersen and Craig Stanley for hosting the Parents Night Out on Feb. 21. A great time was had by the approximately 50 parents/guardians that were in attendance.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT UPDATE
Student Council Icon
Payton Annual
Dance-a-thon

Reported with the help of Eleanor Musick (SR), VP of Student Government

Student Government is excited to host the annual Dance-A-Thon on Mar. 7 from 7PM to 7AM! This event raises funds for the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation, which supports liver cancer research. Students sign up with teams of friends to dance all night in shifts. In addition to dancing, there will be fantastic food donated by local businesses, movies for tired dancers, and a host of other activities. Chaperones are needed. Please contact Eleanor Musick, Mr. Brandon Newton (English), or Mr. David Adamji (Asst. Principal) if you can help chaperone.

Student Government continues to work with several teachers to create a sister-school program in the Philippines, in the wake of the devastating typhoon that hit the island in 2013. We have identified a public school that parallels Payton's dedication to academics and character, and are currently in the process of reaching out to them. The end goal is to create a partnership in which we aid them with whatever academic materials they need (extra books Payton doesn't need, etc), and they aid us through exchange and discourse on the Philippines and world at large. Their perspective would be invaluable. We're hoping this partnership will be a lasting one, and the beginning of a Student Government tradition.

sports icon PAYTON SPORTS
Payton Athletes and Fall Teams Earn Academic
Honors

Congratulations to Payton student athletes, seniors Maya Rodriguez and Juan Aguirre, who each received All-State Academic Team Honorable Mention honors from the Illinois High School Association. (IHSA) The team was chosen out of a group of 490 nominated students from across the state. "This is a tremendous honor and I hope every student who was nominated takes a great deal of pride in all that they have accomplished," said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman. "These students are the embodiment of what it means to take advantage of the entire high school experience." Every IHSA member school was invited to nominate one female student and one male student by the Feb. deadline. Nominees needed to possess a minimum 3.50 grade point average on 4.0 scale after their 7th semester, have participated in at least two IHSA sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years, and have demonstrated outstanding citizenship.

Congratulations also go out to all of Payton's eight IHSA Fall Sports teams. Each of our fall teams earned academic team honors under the IHSA Team Academic Award program. This program is designed to reward teamwork not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. This award recognizes those teams that maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher throughout their respective season.

Chess: Congratulations to the chess team as its season wrapped up with a brilliant showing at the state tournament in Peoria!  Despite losing one of their top players at the last minute, they finished in 37th place among 140 teams - 28 places ahead of the year before. Top boards (Caeley Harihara (JR), Michael May (soph), Asher Borstein (frosh) and Peter Williamson (JR)) each got at least 4.5 points out of a possible 7 points, and Peter Li (soph) on board 7 had 4 points.

Basketball (Girls): The varsity team finished the season with a 13-13 record and an appearance in the Little Village Regional Final. We lost in the regional final to Montini, a team that is one of the favorites to win the 3A state championship.  Annie Brandstrader (JR) qualified for the Sectional Finals in the Three Point Shootout. With a talented junior class and a deep freshmen class, Payton looks forward to great performances next season!
NEXT MEETING ON MARCH 10
Local School Council (LSC)

At the LSC meeting on Feb. 10, CPS representative Annie Lionberger (Deputy Director of CPS Student Health and Wellness) presented the new four year PE policy. She noted that the state's 4 year PE requirement originated before World War II, and that for years CPS has been granted a waiver from the requirement, but will no longer.

The new CPS PE policy complies with state law, and it is effective next year. Among other things, it provides:

-High school students will have daily PE and health education counts toward the daily requirement.

-9th and 10th grade health education will remain the same (9th grade: one semester PE and one semester health education; 10th grade: one semester PE, one semester drivers education).

According to Ms. Lionberger, juniors and seniors may apply for a waiver of the PE requirement on a number of bases. The following are examples:

-Enrollment in marching band.

-Enrollment in Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC).

-Participation in an approved IHSA sport. (e.g. student participated in a sport in year 2 and intends to continue to do so in year 3)

-Students with on-track graduation education course requirements. (i.e. students who fail a course and need to make it up to graduate in subsequent year)

-High school programs that are compact and do not allow for electives. (e.g. STEM or IB Diploma programs)

General Updates

-The CPS 2013-2014 calendar with make-up days is online at the CPS website. The last day of school is now Jun.13.

-The 2014-2015 incoming freshman class will total approximately 220 students, leveling class sizes across the four years.

-ISAT is being phased out and the NWEA test will be the basis for applicants in the 2015-2016 school year.

Please join us at the next LSC meeting on Mar. 10 at 6PM in the Library.
