stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The Payton Faculty: Our Foundation & Our Strength

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

When I came to Payton 2 ½ years ago, my first act as principal was to pen a note of introduction to our students. In that note, I gave the students a homework assignment. The assignment was for each student to send me a note that included, among other things, an answer this question: 'What makes the Payton experience unique and meaningful for you?'

Of the hundreds upon hundreds of responses I received that summer, only a small handful even mentioned Payton's state and national rankings or superlative ACT, SAT II, Prairie State, or AP scores.  Instead, nearly all of the students, a vast supra-majority of them, said the most important defining characteristic of Payton was the faculty - the faculty's dogged commitment to students, their abilities to create interesting assignments, their genuine interest in students' lives beyond their academic growth, and their demonstrations of genuine care for our students.

I concur with the students' assessments. I have always believed in the efficacy of teachers and every day I am humbled to be in the midst of so many wonderful educators. To be sure, Payton has a truly stunning assortment of faculty who exhibit sizable talent. Payton faculty, by any measure, are extraordinary: they teach 5 classes, an advisory, multiple enrichments, 2 seminars, write dozens and dozens of college admissions and scholarship recommendations, dedicate notable amounts of their personal time to the betterment of other people's children, and on and on. We are a fortunate lot at Payton to have so many exemplars of the teaching profession amongst us. They are certainly an indelible part of the lifeblood of this vibrant community.

Go Grizzlies,

Senior Parents:
Deadline for Yearbook Ads Approaches

The time for celebrating your child's academic achievement and entrée into adulthood is quickly approaching. Along with graduation, families will be swept up into the excitement of senior brunch, prom, and other culminating activities.

To show your 2014 graduate how proud you are, please consider surprising your child with an ad in the 2014 Walter Payton yearbook that recognizes the hard work and perseverance that has brought him or her to this glorious moment. There are many designs to choose from, and your sentiments will last forever. All ads will appear in a special section of the yearbook and will be in full color.  Ad sizes range from a quarter of a page to a full page.

Be sure to act soon - a limited number of pages are devoted to senior recognition ads, and ads will be designed and included on a first come, first served basis. Last year ad space sold out and ads submitted at the end of the submission period had to be turned away. The final deadline for submissions and payments is Mar. 10. You can also access the order forms at the senior website.

Yearbooks are selling at a brisk pace and have tended to sell out in the past. If your senior student has not purchased a yearbook, check with Ms. Nantwi in the business office for availability, and order one before it is too late. Also, if your student did not purchase a book from any of the other school years, archived copies might still be available for purchase.

This stunning masterpiece runs in seven movements with solos for Baritone and Soprano. The concert will be approximately one hour long. Ticket pricing:  $5 adults, $3 students/seniors. Payton Logo COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
College Counseling:
Events and Student Planning

The Payton counseling department has been very busy over the last month. Prior to break, we had strong turnouts for our Mock Admissions Night as well as our 4th Annual Alumni College Fair on Dec. 20 (pictured below). You can see more pictures from the Fair on our Alumni Association Facebook page.

This past week, admission representatives from the University of Chicago and DePaul University discussed college planning with our juniors during a long advisory town hall meeting.

We've also been very busy during Enrichments. Freshmen have been introduced to the online college planning tool What's Next Illinois and have completed the Interest Profiler, linking their interests to a variety of careers. In the coming weeks, students should keep an eye out for Enrichments involving summer planning, Collegiate Scholars, Lifeguarding, Boeing Scholars, Soph Talk, and our new career series "A Day in the Life." We have also been meeting individually with juniors in college counseling meetings and are looking forward to Sophomore Parent Night on Thurs. Feb. 6. Keep an eye on Selenium and Counseling Department emails for information and opportunities.

Winter Teams Do Battle in this Grizzly Winter

Boys Basketball: The boys basketball season is well underway, with the varsity team holding a 13-4 season record under Head Coach Anthony Ciaravino and Assistant Head Coach Louis Wu. While injuries have sidelined a couple of starters, the entire team has stepped up to close out some very tight games in Payton's favor. Games are generally on Wed. and Fri. at 5PM. The JV squad plays immediately after the varsity in most cases and is currently 7-10 for the season under Head Coach Jeff Thiede. Come out to the games; find the basketball schedule by clicking here.

Girls Basketball: The Lady Grizzlies have been busy this season with a third place finish for the varsity squad in the Latin Thanksgiving Tournament and an overall record of 6-10. Under Varsity Head Coach Josh Greenburg and Assistant Varsity Coaches Steve Rininger and Bob Knopken, they are currently seeded 20 out of 32 for the upcoming CPS Tournament. The JV team, coached by Ms. Donna Figenshu, has also racked up victories over Francis Parker, Northside, and Ida Crown.

Chess: A big welcome to the newest members of the team: Asher Borstein (Frosh), George Figueroa (Frosh), Kit Ng (Soph), Tiffany Siu (Frosh) and Peter Williamson (JR). Returning players include Emory Brigden (Soph), Noel Cabanas (SR), Caeley Harihara (SR), Lev Kendrick (SR), Ian Kidwell (JR), Peter Li (JR), Michael May (JR), and David Zegeye (SR). The team is off to a great start. We have had several notable individual performances and recently the team tied for first (but finished second on tie-breaks) at a tournament at Kelly High School. Likewise, the team tied for second at a larger tournament at Niles High. Payton's goal is to crack the top-25 at state this year - this will be a substantial accomplishment for this young and talented team. The Chess team continues to look for students who enjoy playing chess. Please contact any member of the team with your questions!

Swimming: As the end of the season nears, swimmers' times have improved tremendously due to all the dedication and hard work put in over the season. The team placed sixth overall out of 24 teams at City Relays. The frosh-soph team has won its last three meets and is looking to make a strong final push towards city championships. The varsity team is getting stronger every week as it is in a rebuilding stage looking towards the future. After a few more regular season meets, the swimmers are looking forward to Sectionals at UIC on Sat. Feb. 22 at 1PM.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
Faculty Offer a Program Model; Students Welcome Prague Visitors

Payton - Creating A Model for Global Citizenship: On Sat. Jan. 11, Ms. Alicia Gonzalez and Ms. Colleen Long of the World Language Department offered a professional development workshop at Payton called "How to Build an International Travel Program From the Ground Up," which highlighted how Payton teachers successfully plan, organize, fund-raise for, and lead cost-efficient international student travel. Participants learned how to nurture school-wide investment for student travel and how to begin researching sister schools or language institutes that match their schools' and students' specific objectives and needs.

Prague-Chicago Exchange: For ten days in Oct., the Payton-Prague Exchange hosted students from Prague, Czech Republic, in their homes and around Chicago. The students enjoyed excursions to Navy Pier, the Sears Tower, Lincoln Park Zoo, and other Chicago landmarks. There was a group brunch in Lincoln Park, and a celebration of Czech culture at the consulate in Chicago. A Halloween party was thrown to introduce the Czech students to a holiday they don't usually celebrate, where they experienced trick or treating and jack o'lanterns for the first time. "I was definitely nervous beforehand," admitted Maisie Anrod (JR), "but my student turned out to be extremely easy to relate to, and we got along well almost instantly." At the beginning of the trip, both Czech and Payton students were a bit anxious about the hosting, but quickly grew close to their students, and were able both to explore a new culture and rediscover their own. "In the end, I was really sad to see her go, but it just made me even more excited to travel to Prague in the spring!" said Lydia Golitz (JR).

Payton's annual International Travel Expo: On Fri. Feb. 21 during all four lunch periods, Payton students can partake in this year's International Travel Expo. At this event we promote both school-sponsored trips and provide space for outside organizations to come in and share their programs and scholarships with our eager and interested students. Students have the time and space to meet one-on-one with organizations, ask questions and learn more about the travel process. Parents - please encourage your child to learn more about the life-changing and eye-opening experiences these programs afford. Information on next year's Payton-sponsored trips will be posted online Fri. Feb. 21. Click here for more details.
