A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Mindful and Appreciative
of Our Payton Community

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

This is a time of year when we celebrate Thanksgiving...a time of family and friends, a time of reflection and rejuvenation, and a time to give thanks for the bounty of our lives. As I reflect on the world that is Payton, there is so much for which to be thankful. Payton is a place where intrigued and intriguing students, expert faculty, and supportive parents abound. We are so fortunate to have such a collection of people. The German poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote: 'I'm so glad that you are here, it helps me to realize how beautiful the world is.'

These lines remind me of all of you, our Payton parents and families.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve with so many talented, dedicated, and loving people. You remind me time and time again of how beautiful the world actually is: a world of dreaming and hoping youth, and a world of kind and committed adults.

I am so glad that you are here.

Simply...thank you,

Tim Devine, Principal

The Jewish Student Connection is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Canned Food Drive, underway and running until Dec. 6. Please bring your canned foods to school and help the JSC give someone something to be thankful for this holiday season. The drive benefits the hungry of Chicago, a population that is sadly growing and needs help more than ever this holiday season. College Counseling
Update

Where does the time go? November was another very busy month in the Payton counseling office. Many seniors completed early action/decision applications and are anxiously awaiting mid-December results. Freshmen meetings have concluded and now we're starting to shift our attention to the junior class as they begin focus on the college exploration process. Junior Parent Night was well attended on Nov. 6 and 40 juniors enjoyed a Nov. 20 college tour of Indiana University. On Nov. 16, Mr. Mario Ortiz (Counseling) and Mrs. Alicia Gonzalez (World Language) held a successful workshop on college planning for Latino parents and guardians. Individual meetings and enrichments will be held with juniors through January.

As we look ahead to December, juniors will have the option to take the practice ACT on Wed. Dec. 4 after seminars. On Thur. Dec. 19, the department will host a mock admissions evening presented by senior admission representatives from Lafayette College and Gettysburg College. The event is primarily aimed at sophomore and junior families. Click here to submit your RSVP.

Following seminars on Fri. Dec. 20, we encourage all students to attend the 4th Annual Payton Alumni College Fair in the Payton gymnasium. Recent Payton alumni return to Payton to represent their colleges and offer perspective to current students with regards to college selection. Parents are also welcome.

Finally, we'd like to congratulate Payton counselor Ms. Sara Diaz on earning National Board Certification.

FACULTY NEWS?
And Then There Were 9...

Faced with the challenge of paying for international travel, food, and lodging, the UK Experience students and teachers came up with a novel fundraiser: an Ugly Beard competition. Normally clean-shaven teachers and staff members were invited to participate by committing to grow an "Ugly Beard" - no grooming allowed. Each participant had a jar decorated with his photo and each day Payton students and faculty had a chance to put money into the jars of the people whose ugly beards looked the most ridiculous, or into the jar of the person they most wanted to continue growing their ugly beard. Each day, the participant with the least money in his jar was eliminated - and was free to shave!

The contest was launched on Nov. 4th, and 19 volunteers set their razors aside to help raise money. The nine gentlemen above, still in the race after 10 rounds, are Mr. John Belcaster (Social Studies), Mr. Tim Devine (Principal), Mr. Jason Chau (English), Mr. Paul Escobar (P.E.), Mr. Byron Espinoza (Mathematics), Mr. Walter Kinderman (Science), Mr. McKendry Marano (Mathematics), Mr. Valentin Torres (Science), and Mr. Louis Wu (World Language). The event raised money from an unexpected source when a British businessman encountered a scruffy-looking Principal Devine at the British Consulate. Mr. Devine, self-conscious about his appearance, quickly explained the contest and his role as a participant. Much to his surprise, the gentleman sent a generous contribution to Mr. Devine the next day, which he in turn used to fill the jars of some of his "competitors."

Three weeks and over $678.20 later, Mr. Devine was the last man....fuzzy! (see Principal Letter above for a final look.) Mr. Belcaster came in second and Mr. Wu took third place.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Congratulations,
Donnie Campbell

Payton student Donnie Campbell (JR) is going to Nationals in the Special Olympics. He won a gold medal in the pentathlon in Chicago and then placed first at State Competition last summer. He will represent Illinois this coming summer at the Special Olympics National Games in Princeton, N.J. The pentathlon is a track and field event that in Special Olympics competition includes the100M run, 400M run, long jump, high jump, and shot put.

Ms. Sarah Spencer (Special Ed.) reports, "We are very proud. He is the first Payton athlete to compete at the national level." Donnie's mom, Araceli Maldonado, noted, "I want to start by saying the minute the doctor placed Donald in my arms, I took a look into his eyes and I knew right there and then he was a special boy. He turned out to be such a responsible young man. He has received 11 gold medals, for basketball, swimming, and soccer. He also participates in bowling and golf. Donald takes pride in working hard to accomplish his goals...Donald is a very pleasant, humble, kind, caring, thoughtful, respectful young man...He brings joy and blessings to our home." Donald stated he is autistic and that one day he will make an impact on how the world thinks about and sees people with autism. "We are different, not less." Donnie's family sends a special thanks to the coaches, Mr. Eric Kuchii (P.E.) and Ms. Spencer, for believing in him.

Payton also congratulates Lewis Sandoboe (SR), who won a bronze medal at State Competition this summer in the100M free style swimming race.

Payton is now participating in Unified Sports, a program of Special Olympics dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared training and competition experiences. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. According to Special Olympics, "Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away." Payton's first attempt at Unified Sports will be bocce training. Other sports this year will include snowshoe, swimming, powerlifting, aquatics, Cubs Care T-Ball, track and field, and softball. For more information contact Ms. Spencer at  or Mr. Escobar.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
International Travel and
Education

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State is now accepting applications. Payton students have participated in this program before, so please consider taking advantage of this opportunity!

The YES Abroad program is an innovative high school student exchange program between U.S. residents and people from countries with significant Muslim populations. Sixty-five full scholarships are available to U.S. high school students to live with host families and study for one academic year in countries that may include: Bosnia, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mali, Morocco, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, or Turkey.

Visit the YES Abroad website  to learn more about the program. The application deadline for 2014-15 participants is Jan. 9.

Jet Set, Ready, Go! - The latest research on the benefits of travel abroad focused on how educational trips impact U.S. students.

"An educational trip was designated as any domestic trip taken when the person was between the ages of 12-18 that involved learning about the history or culture of the area visited, either as a school or family trip, and was at least 50 miles from home (one-way) or had an overnight stay regardless of mileage." The results were most impressive! Educational trips correlated with higher rates of high school and college graduation, increased interest in learning, and higher salaries later in life. Football - It was an outstanding year for Payton football. The Payton Grizzly football team celebrated their 8-1 conference championship season at their annual football banquet, attended by 150 players, coaches, families and fans, and joined by the Cheerleading squad to recognize the efforts of these student-athletes.

Head Coach Tony Faltin presented four team-voted awards:

*MVP Offense: Eric Seward (SR)

*MVP Defense: Alex Brown (SR)

*34 Award (the Lendy Award), which recognizes character, commitment, and leadership: Max McMahon (SR)

*Most Improved: Alex Lefauve (soph)

In addition, five players were named All-Conference by the Chicago Public League Football Coaches Association (CPLFCA): Seniors Eric Seward, Alex Brown, Max McMahon, Owen Bloomfield (JR), and Mike Kalanik (soph), who was also voted All-City by the CPLFCA. Alex Brown was named a Chicago Sun-Times All-Public League Honorable Mention player.

Girls Volleyball - The Lady Grizzlies extended their perfect regular season to become the 3A Supersectional champs in the Antioch Supersectional. After three very exciting close matches, the girls came out in the end with a win and a trip down to Bloomington to clinch fourth in the state! The exceptional camaraderie of the team was the subject of this recent DNAInfo article. Congratulations to the team and to coach Joel Anderson for another great year!

The winter sports season has just begun, so tune in next month for some exciting news from our basketball, track, bowling, chess, and boys swimming teams.

NEXT MEETING ON DECEMBER 9
Local School Council (LSC)
Report

The LSC met on Nov. 18. Principal Devine reported the following general updates:

-WPCP was ranked #1 in the State of Illinois by the Chicago Sun-Times and the school was also ranked as one of the top 100 schools in the nation by Newsweek Magazine .

-WPCP received the highest rating by CPS for its Creative Arts Program, and received a $1,500 grant.

-Ms.Kerry Catlin (English) and Kevin Wasielewski (English) produced the Peter Pan Play and have received a $5,000 grant from Hubbard Street Dance Company to support the Drama Program.

-Michelle Mowery (English) was invited by CPS to be a lead presenter at Tech Talk on how she incorporates technology in the curriculum every day.

-Kate Johnston (Choir Director) co-authored an article with two professors from Northwestern. It will be published in Frontiers and Educational Psychology and is about the link between music, education, linguistics, reading and cognition language development.

CPS has restructured its networks based on geography and is mixing elementary and high schools. As of Nov. 12, WPCP has been reassigned to Network #6, which includes Near North, Near West, Loop, Bridgeport, and Chinatown neighborhoods. Jones and Ogden are the only other high schools in the network, and the new Network Chief is Herald "Chip" Johnson. He was the Deputy Chief for the North-Northwest Network for about five months before he moved to the Humboldt Park network as Deputy Chief there.

The outgoing network implemented 45 minute quarterly assessments at the end of each quarter to determine student proficiency with certain common core state standards (or English, Math, Social Studies and Science). It was rolled out with four days' notice, and due to timing issues, the first quarter assessment was eliminated. It is expected the tests will be executed in Quarter 2 and Quarter 3. School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP) is the new way the CPS schools will be assessed and placed into 5 levels. Demonstration of growth makes up 30% of the assessment.

Please join us at the next regular scheduled LSC meeting on Dec. 9, at 6:00PM in the Library.
