A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
A Special Place To Be

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

Payton is a vibrant, special place. I am reminded of this every day as I speak with students and faculty, and watch them engage in dynamic acts of teaching and learning. Our people-talented students, expert faculty, and supportive families are what define Payton. Yes, we have remarkable data: this week we were named the top-ranked school in Illinois, and are one of the top-ranked high schools in the country. We saw a 2.2 gain in ACT scores, and a supra-majority of our students take multiple AP courses, averaging 3+ on the AP exams. We have dozens of National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholars. We have welcomed CPS's top-rated incoming freshmen class for the past two years, etc. etc. More meaningful than statistics are experiences: in classrooms, enrichments, clubs, Seminars, and on athletic fields. This is where our students grow and develop, it is where they form Payton's culture and community, which begets such external recognitions. Yes. Payton is a vibrant, special place.

Thank you to the dozens and dozens of parents and guardians who volunteer on campus throughout the year. You are all indelible parts of the Payton experience for our students and faculty, as you live the value of selfless service to others. Thank you!  A few quick notes:

*Fall sports
are winding up strong seasons, with all making the city and/or state and/or national playoffs. Our academic and fine arts programs are flourishing with students deeply ensconced in competitions and events, including: Math Team, Debate Team, Payton Players, choirs, Amigos de las Americas, and Global Connections programs (see Global Connections below)
*Club Rush Day, where students learn about our many academic and service clubs was very well-attended.

*Payton Athletic Booster Association has been launched, and will ensure that players and coaches have our full support (our goal is to be akin to Stanford-excellent academics and excellent athletics).

*Campus Expansion discussions have continued with Central Office. Details to follow next week.
*The Journalism program continues its thoughtful coverage of events and issues at Payton, and earlier this week launched the digital Paw Print. (bookmark PawPrint and visit regularly) The platform provides new opportunities for student journalists to hone their craft, and a new vehicle for students and parents to learn about Payton.
*Physical Education: Next year, CPS will institute a graduation requirement of 4 years of P.E. Accordingly, all students must take P.E. next year, though there will be exceptions (e.g. students in more than one interscholastic sport will likely be exempt). CPS plans to provide specifics of the policy in January. Our administrative team, Physical Education Team, and Instructional Leadership Team are working on implementation plans.

*S^3 - Supporting Struggling Student - is helping us identify and intervene with students showing signs of academic and/or social/emotional struggle. As parents, if you feel your child is struggling please reach out to a teacher or Counselor. It is critical to us that every student have rich, fulfilling experiences on campus. We know that high school is full of many wonderful times for students, but it is also a time of change and stress. We are working to identify students with emerging or existing struggles, and to employ ways to bolster such students. Our goal of ensuring that student find the support they need is more realistic when parents inform us of struggles they observe in their children.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us for their high school experience, and for being an active part of their growth. To be sure, all Payton students are far better off for the number of thoughtful, caring adults who find ways to challenge and support them, and who offer so many opportunities for them to explore the world and themselves.

See you at Open House and Report Card Pick-Up!

CHICAGO CULTURE
Payton's 16" Softball Team:
Part of a Chicago Tradition

The fact that a 16" Softball ball does not travel "too far" when hit is an important factor that has contributed to the game's popularity and longevity in Chicago. Even more importantly, it can be played in a smaller area, with just a bat and a ball (no gloves) so the game became popular during the Depression - when a ball cost a dime. And thus, 16" softball became a noted part of Chicago's cultural landscape.

Payton's 16" Softball team had a spectacular season, finishing with a 22-2 record. Reigning City champs, the team started off the season with wins against schools including Northside, Whitney Young, Marshall, Steinmetz, and Phoenix Military Academy. The team ended its near-perfect run with a loss to Lane Tech in the City quarterfinals.

Head Coach Valerie Gemskie, Alumni Coaches Ryan Sechrest and Scott Potter thank graduating senior captains Erick Masias, Pat Hurd, Sam Kelly, Earl Schultz and Ivan Chen who, along with senior players Donovan Aranda, Troy Boccelli, and John Finan, led the team this year. They leave behind a legacy of battle-tested young talent: freshmen Sam Algas, Asher Borstein, Noah Coffman, Ethan Gray, Jesse "Fuzzy" Herr, Matt Shepard, Nico Stepanicev and Alejandro Varjas joined sophomores Ian Kidwell, Michael May, Leo Pelligrini, and Nathan Sutka. This year's juniors, Angel Camuy, Ubaldo Castillo, Alex Gee, George Lopez, and Tony Ramirez will step up next year to continue the Payton (and Chicago) tradition of whacking that ginormous softball and catching it with their bare hands.

THE ROAD TO COLLEGE
Counseling Dept.
and College Planning

October has been a very busy month in the counseling world. We're having fun getting to know our freshmen in individual meetings. Checklists have been reviewed with sophomores and juniors, by advisory, during enrichment. We are also very busy working with our seniors on college applications as many Nov. 1 deadlines approach. Naviance accounts can help students keep on top of things during the busy application season. Check frequently for updates on scholarships and for a calendar of college representative visits.

We have also been very busy in the evenings. Freshmen Parent Night was well attended on Oct. 16, as was Financial Aid Night on Oct. 23. We're looking forward to our college planning presentation at Junior Parent College Night on Nov. 6 at 6:30PM. Academic Approach will be on hand to discuss our in-house test prep option that begins in Feb. Juniors will have the opportunity to take a practice ACT after seminars on Dec. 4 and a detailed score report will be mailed home following the exam.

Please keep an eye on your email for counseling related information and events. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns. We hope to visit with many of you during report card pick-up on Nov.12.

Welcoming New Friends:
Reflections

France Exchange
:
Students from Strasbourg arrived in Chicago on Oct. 1 and stayed with Payton families for two weeks. Here are a few quotes from parents and students about the visit:

Louie Levinson (SR): "The exchange not only gave me countless new friends, it also gave me a new outlook on my city. I won't forget the 15.5 hours we spent playing Pokémon or the five pounds he gained while here and how much fun it all was."

Mrs. Shefner (Alex Mine, SR): "We had a lovely time with our student, Theo, and are grateful that he has taught Alex how to set the table for dinner! All in all it was much more fun than any of us imagined. Between jazz, blues, apples, and judo we are all exhausted."

Ms. Berry (Calvin Edwards, SR): "I have heard Calvin speak more French in the two weeks that Maxime spent with us than I have in the entire first three years he has been at Payton. I would definitely do this again if given the opportunity."

Payton French students will travel to the Alsace on Apr. 24!

Czech Republic Exchange: We're excited to welcome our Prague friends who arrived Oct. 25 to stay with Payton families for 10 days. Their visit has focused on the culture of Chicago and the Czech influence on Chicago. Host students and Prague guests enjoyed a reception at the Czech Consulate, and our visitors have split their time between Payton classes and trips around the city. A Halloween party and group gatherings with host families will round out the stay.
Payton students travel to Prague Apr. 5.

AMIGOS: Last summer four Payton students traveled abroad through the Amigos de las Americas youth leadership organization. Adan Soriano (JR) traveled to Costa Rica to work on a national park restoration project. Isabella Yeung (SR) worked with a youth empowerment program in Paraguay. Angelic Lopez (SR) helped organize a youth mixed-media project in Nicaragua. Caeley Harihara (JR) worked with a public health program in Panama.
Click here to watch the students' video about their experiences!

AMIGOS focuses on leadership and community development. It provides opportunities to work and live in a Latin American community for 5-8 weeks over the summer. The Chicago application deadline is Nov. 3, but there is a spring deadline through the International Office. Click here for more information on how to apply.

NEXT MEETING ON NOVEMBER 18
Local School Council (LSC)
Report

At the LSC meeting on Oct. 7, Mr. Tim Devine (Principal) reported that Mr. Lance Paulsen is now Counseling Department Chair. Payton's creative arts program has been rated Excellent by CPS and was awarded a $6,000 grant, based on a submission prepared by Ms. Kerry Catlin (English) and Principal Devine. Payton is working with Pearson Education to obtain software designed to identify academically struggling students, which will enable school leadership to implement S3 (Supporting Struggling Students) resources for students in need. CPS announced it will reorganize its Networks. To reduce costs, CPS plans to consolidate, blending elementary schools and high schools in the same Network.

On Sept. 18, Mayor Emanuel announced Payton's expansion, with an addition to be built on what is now the faculty parking lot. The $17 million addition will house classrooms and a new gym, it will be built with TIF funds, and construction will be overseen by the Public Building Commission. Construction will begin at the 2014 summer break, with the goal of opening in the fall of 2015. Student enrollment will increase in phases, with an additional 75-100 freshmen enrolling each year for four (4) years.

Congratulations to Donald Campbell, who advanced to compete at State for Special Olympics, and is also being recognized nationally for his athletic abilities.

Please join us at the next LSC meeting on Nov. 18, at 6PM in the Library.
