two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton sites.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you my click here for Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Not is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
A Fall Season Brings
New Possibilities

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

Payton has been a beehive of activity: our honors and Advanced Placement classes are well underway, athletic and academic teams are immersed in practices and competitions, our freshmen are finding their paces as high school students, seniors are envisioning their post-Payton academic lives as they formally commence the college application process, and on and on. Exciting things are afoot.

Adding to this excitement is the news that Payton will be expanding.
The demand for seats at CPS selective enrollment high schools far exceeds the supply. Payton's new building will enable us to add between 300-400 students to our school over the course of a few years. The increase in seats will be gradual, with each post-expansion freshman class having 75-100 more students than in past years. For us at Payton, this is certainly an expansion of bricks

and mortar, but the greater benefits to our community are:

·Curriculum Expansion: With more students and teachers, we will be able to expand current courses and slate new courses that we have not been able to offer in the past, and;
· Larger Student & Faculty Talent Pools: With more students and teachers, there will be an even greater pool of talent from which to draw for our many academic and extracurricular programs, thus making those programs richer.

These benefits will enhance the Payton experiences for all students. The Leadership Team has been discussing what these academic experiences might look like and how the new building can support them (form following function). We are soliciting ideas from Student Government, and we will host student and parent forums in the coming weeks to gather input about our academic expansion, and to provide updates on the bricks and mortar plans for the new building.

One of the great aspects of the Payton education is the close-knit relationships that form between students, between students and faculty, and between faculty members. Payton's post-expansion enrollment will be in the neighborhood of 1200 students. I have absolute confidence that the family-oriented nature of Payton - faculty genuinely knowing individual students, parents having ready access to faculty and administration, students forging life-long bonds with each other - will continue to be a tremendous aspect of the Payton experience. The additional students and faculty will increase the academic and social vibrancy of our Payton family.

From a construction standpoint, it appears that the new building will be erected where the parking lot is currently located and will be connected to our current building. There are dozens of logistical, construction-related questions and issues to be tended to: e.g. How many classrooms will be added? We don't know for certain at this juncture. Will the new building be ADA compliant? Of course. Will there be a gym and/or swimming pool? Perhaps. Will the cafeteria be expanded? A café will be included. What is the expansion timeline? It is short, the goal being to begin construction in summer 2014, and open the new building for the 2015-2016 academic year. The greatest question for us is: how will this expansion enhance our academic and extracurricular programs? We will seek your input and ideas as we craft answers to that question.

I hope this finds you and your family thriving,

Go Grizzlies!

THE ROAD TO COLLEGE
Counseling Dept.
and College Planning

The counseling department has been very busy during the first month of school. College visit season is in full swing and our juniors and seniors have enjoyed meeting with admission representatives from the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Approximately 150 colleges and universities will visit this fall and our updated list can be found in Naviance.

We have been meeting with seniors individually and via enrichment to review college lists and application requirements. "Senior Parent Night," on Sept. 16, was well attended. As Oct. begins, we will turn our attention to the freshmen. Individual "Get To Know You" meetings will be held with students during Oct. and Nov. There will also be a "Freshmen Parent Night" on Oct. 16 for counselors to meet new parents and discuss high school planning topics. We will also meet with juniors and sophomores, by advisory, during the month of Oct. to review college-planning topics. Counselors will place students in enrichments for these meetings. Students should see their counselors if there is a conflict with the designated time.

Important Upcoming Events:

Oct. 16: Freshmen Parent Night (H.S. Planning)

Oct. 19: PSAT for Juniors

Oct. 23: Financial Aid Night with College Planners, Inc.

Nov. 6: Junior Parent Night (College Planning)

Dec. 4: Practice ACT for Juniors (Optional, recommended, after Seminars)

Dec. 20: Annual Alumni College Fair (after Seminars)

Please don't hesitate to reach out to your student's counselor at any time with questions or concerns. You can find contact information on the counseling website, click here.

FOP Fundraising News

The FOP Fundraising Team is hard at work!
Each year, Friends of Payton raises money to cover the gap between what Payton receives from CPS and what Payton really needs to be the excellent school that it is. Last year, FOP had great fundraising success thanks to the excellent leadership of Cathy Nardi. This year, we need to work even harder to support Payton in the wake of the summer's deep budget cuts. Please consider for the following opportunities to contribute:

Annual Appeal
- In mid-October, every Payton family will receive a letter requesting a donation to FOP and the Payton Parents Initiative for Education (PPIE). FOP raises funds for the annual needs of the school while PPIE raises endowment funds to insure Payton's long term financial needs. Please give as generously as you can. As highlighted in the letter, your donations will be matched! Special thanks to Robin Steans and all the volunteers who helped get this letter together and out to the donors!

Spring Gala
- YOUR skills are appreciated and needed! Spring Gala planning is underway. Volunteers are needed to help make this event a success. Currently, we need people to work with Bidding for Good and Greater Giving Software to set up our online auction and our data entry. We also need someone who lives near the school to store auction items as they are donated. If you have expertise in running a successful auction, or are looking for a one-time project and would love to volunteer, please email FOPFundraising@gmail.com, or call Candise Cho at 773.837.2550.

Teacher Wish List
- The Wish List is off to a fantastic start! Mr. Tim Devine (Principal) and his Leadership Team gather wishes from teachers, FOP compiles these wishes and posts them at various school events. Parents and guardians may review the lists and choose items to fund. Thanks to all who manned the table at Curriculum Night and to those who purchased $9,369 worth of items ranging from pocket maps and potting soil to AP Micro-Economics books. Many items remain available for purchase. Please look for the next Wish List Table during Teacher Conferences on Tues. Nov. 12 or email fopevp@gmail.com for details on how to volunteer or to purchase an item.
FOP VOLUNTEERS AT WORK
2013-2014 Payton Directory Is On Its Way!

The 2013-14 Payton Student Directory will be distributed to students the week of Oct. 8th during Advisory. Thanks to all parents and guardians who reviewed and updated their information in the online database. If you have questions please email the directory team at fopevp@gmail.com.

Thanks to Jane Barclay and Steve Gallancy for producing the directory again this year. Jane, the parent of a senior, has been a key part of the directory team for the past four years and we need someone to volunteer to take on her role, or this may be the school's last directory!

Roundup

Girls Golf -
Last year, the Payton Girls golf team completed a very good year: they placed fourth in the IHSA Regionals, with graduated SR Yliana Velazquez recognized as the City Champion. Six girls went to State Sectionals as individuals, more than any other CPS school. How do you top that? The Grizzlie Golfers remain undefeated this season. Brooke Gardner ('15) and Chloe Wilson ('15) are co-captains this year.

Boys Golf - The Payton-Jones team finished its regular season with a double victory against Lindblom and Von Steuben, ending with an outstanding 8-1 record and a great position heading into the City Qualifier on Wed. Oct. 2. Highlights of the season include a first (for Payton-Jones) dip under the 160 point barrier with an awe-inspiring 157-187 thrashing of Northside College Prep, a 1-under par 34 score for (Jones player) Erica Jackson (who shot three straight birdies in a match against Lincoln Park and Lindblom), and decisive victories over Lane Tech and Lakeview HS.

Boys Soccer - Payton's soccer teams are finishing strong as the regular season draws to a close. The Varsity team's record is 6-2-3 (win-loss-tie), and our young but quickly-developing JV team is 2-3-2. Both teams logged exciting victories over Northside College Prep in play last week. And both teams will enter the City playoffs the second week of Oct. We look forward to more Grizzly wins.

Girls Tennis - The team just completed its regular season with a winning conference record: victories over Taft, Lane, Jones, Morgan Park, and Brooks, and a close loss to Whitney Young. The team also faced tough private school competitors, losing a hard fought battle with the U of C Lab School, and then sailing to an easier win over De La Salle Institute. After another non-conference match against the Latin School this week, the Lady Grizzlies will move on to City and Sectional championships where prospects are better than ever for this team!

Girls Volleyball - Coach Joel Anderson reports that Payton is first in its conference, and captured 2nd at the Northside Tourney. Players Morgan Barnes (SR) and Olivia Rozmus (soph) captured All-Tourney honors. Check out the WPCP website for live coverage of the Lady Grizzlies in action!

Sailing - The WPCP sailing team has qualified for two big events so far this year. First, a combined team A and B fleets raced in 2 man boats in early Sept. Qualifying teams were juniors Wade Wagner & Sabina Van Mell, and Peter Bied(SR) & Yusuf Mallick(JR), who move on to race in the Great Lakes Championship on Nov. 16 &17. The second qualifying event was the Midwest Cressy Singlehanded Qualifier. Thirty five boats from across the Midwest competed. Payton's Wade Wagner qualified to move on to the Cressy National Single Handed Championships, to be held in Newport, Rhode Island in November.

SPORTS UPDATE
Grizzly Football News
Includes 42-16
Homecoming Victory!

Payton's football team, under Head Coach Tony Faltin, had a busy summer leading up to the fall football season. Players worked out all summer, with official practice commencing two weeks before school started. The team was one of 16 CPS teams (out of over 80 football programs) invited to participate in Nike's 7-on-7 passing league. The team traveled to the University of Notre Dame for its passing league, an opportunity for the players to gain experience in a non-contact environment while playing teams they would not normally encounter during the regular season. The team and its Boosters did some summer fundraising, selling ads in the team's program book to fund the buses, participation fees, uniforms and safety gear needed to play football. The coaches spent a good part of their summers renovating the weight room at St. Joe's with all-new equipment.

Team captains this year are Head Captain Max McMahon (SR), Ethan May (SR), Eric Seward (SR), and Michael Mazurkiewicz (JR). The roster includes 33 players, with many freshmen and sophomores rounding out a small core of dedicated upperclassmen.

The team has four wins and one loss after trouncing Bowen High School at Homecoming game last Saturday. Payton is first in the Chicago Public League-Great Lakes Division as of this writing.

Performing at the Homecoming game were Sounds of Sweetness,  the Poms & Cheerleading squads; and Gus (pictured above), our Grizzly mascot.

PPIE Logo
The parent-led initiative to create an endowment fund for Payton is moving into its 6th fiscal year with a strong track record and a healthy fund level. For new Payton families and for those who may need a refresher, in 2007 a group of Payton parents, administrators and community members launched the Payton Prep Initiative for Education (PPIE) to create a fund that will sustain the academic vision, mission, and tradition of excellence at Payton well into the future. PPIE's short term goal is to raise $3,000,000 and then begin making annual grants to Payton to remedy budget shortfalls that plague CPS schools. PPIE has met twenty percent of its initial funding goal. In the long term, PPIE hopes to raise a total of $10,000,000 to support and sustain the Payton mission.

PPIE is looking to expand its board to carry out this important work. It seeks individuals who have interest or experience in four areas: philanthropic investment and development work; website design and communications; grant writing; and alumni development.

PPIE is also working with a small group of Payton parents, current students and alumni to form a Payton Alumni Association for the benefit of current and future alums. If you would like to get involved, please contact Cathy Nardi at gastevich@msn.com.  Payton's first graduating class will celebrate its 10th Reunion this spring, the first-ever reunion of Payton alumni. The inaugural reunion event will be a co-ed softball game on Oct. 5 at 11:00AM at Seward Park. If you are interested in participating, email Merisa Cano or Raymond Washington.

PPIE's next board meeting is on Oct. 17 at 8:00AM at Payton. Please attend, or click here to contact Susan Orloff for more information.
