A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Preparing for 2013-2014: Payton Budget Recap

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

This season of budget cuts has been difficult for everyone as questions and concerns lingered while budget matters went unresolved until recently. To recap, in Feb. we articulated our budget needs to CPS Central Office. On Jun. 3, we received a budget that would have netted a reduction of 9.9 faculty and staff positions. We continued work internally and with CPS to creatively solve our budget issues. The past two months were a flurry of budgetary activity. There has been significant progress, for which we are thankful, yet we will be cut 3.5 faculty and staff positions. Again, this is far better than the 9.9 positions we were expected to lose as recently as Jun. 3. We are pleased that CPS heard our arguments and supported our creative solutions.

To partially cover the loss of teaching positions, I will continue to teach an AP U.S. Government course and Asst. Principal David Adamji will teach an Honors Survey Literature course. Asst. Principal Michele Washington will teach a Seminar and Enrichment as well.

Student fees have not been increased in a number of years. Given the budget cuts, the LSC voted to increase those fees by $50 per student. When paying student fees at Registration, you are welcome and encouraged to pay any additional amount you can, all funds going to restore losses resulting from the budget cuts.

We will, now more than ever, need your support in our upcoming fundraising efforts. Our parent organizations - FOP and PPIE - each of which have fundraising components, will provide further information. Your support is always appreciated and it helps us continue to develop programs befitting our students' needs and talents.

Importantly, I hope that the summer has treated you well and everyone is thriving on your end.

Go Grizzlies,
Tim Devine, Principal

Friends of Payton Financial Review of 2012-2013

The Payton community continued to be generous in its support of our teachers and students, with overall revenue more than 5% higher than the previous school year. While the Gala, which includes the auction, paddle raise, and other activities, continues to be our biggest revenue source, the Annual Appeal raised 25% more than last year's appeal. The Teacher Wishlists represent a fairly modest part of our overall fundraising activities, but they are a unique opportunity for parents and guardians to support teachers and students directly in the classroom -- the 80% growth in Wishlist revenue over last year is a testament to our families' commitment to what happens every day in Payton classrooms.

On the expense side, we continue efforts to minimize our costs so that as much of our revenue as possible can go directly to school programs and activities. FOP overhead costs have been reduced to half of their previous level.

Reflecting the needs of the school as articulated by the Leadership Team, Technology and Equipment was the largest expense, with FOP spending over $60,000 to help update and improve computing and other school resources. The nearly $30,000 we spent on Student Activities includes support of the Payton Players, Senior activities, and the Wellness Fair, among others. And FOP's continued support of student international travel and athletic fees helps to ensure that all of our students can participate in these activities. Finally, the $16,211 in Teacher Professional Development, while a relatively small share of our total expenses, reflects our commitment to supporting our teachers both in and outside the classroom.

The LSC met on July 8. Nominations and selection of officers for the 2013-2014 year were made. Cheryl Watson-Lowry was elected Chairperson, Kaarina Salovaara was elected Vice Chair, Gaute Grindheim was elected Secretary, and Rachel Shefner Mine was elected Freedom of Information Act/Open Meetings Act Officer. The LSC set the dates for this year's monthly meetings as follows: Aug.12, Sept. 9, Oct. 7, Nov. 18, Dec. 9, Jan. 13, Feb. 10, Mar. 10, Apr. 21, May 12, and June 9.  Meetings will be held in the Payton Library and will begin at 6:00PM. Parents, guardians and students are encouraged to attend.

Freshmen Connections began on Mon., July 9 and continued through Aug. 3. Participation was again strong, with 191 of the 213 incoming freshmen attending the program.

In additional meetings over the summer, the LSC met several times to discuss and vote on a school budget for the upcoming school year. At each of the meetings, Principal Tim Devine submitted an updated proposed budget, as each budget incorporated the most recent adjustments to CPS funding. Each budget passed with unanimous approval by the Payton LSC. (a recap can be found above, in the Principal Letter.)

Please join us at the next LSC meeting on Aug. 12, at 6:00PM in the Library.
