payton community monthly meeting

6/05

The monthly Payton Community Meeting is a brief and informative opportunity to hear what is going on at school directly from our principal. The meetings start at 6PM and usually end by 7PM. The meetings are generally held on the first Wednesday of every month, but always check the monthly calendar (at right) in case the schedule has changed. All meetings are held in the Library

 fop fundraising is
a year-round effort

The Friends of Payton needs your valuable donations to support Payton's educational mission. There are three ways to do it:

1. Mail a check payable to FOP
at 1034 N. Wells Street, Chicago, IL 60610.

2. Drop a check into the FOP box in the school office
.  Make it payable to FOP.

3. Contribute online via credit card by clicking the donate button on Payton's homepage or just click here.

All contributions are tax deductible, and all amounts are equally appreciated.

lsc meetings are open, next is 6/10
Parents, guardians, and the public are welcome at Local School Council (LSC) meetings, which are held monthly in the Payton Library at 6PM.

The LSC is an elected body that has three main responsibilities: 1) School improvement planning (CIWP), 2) School budget, and 3) Principal evaluation, retention and selection.

All are welcome to attend and to comment during the "Public Comment" portion of the meeting.

For more on the LSC, including a schedule of coming meetings, minutes of previous meetings, and a roster of members, please visit the LSC page of the Payton website.

two more ways to

to stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to: watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.

check grades + attendance online
ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton site.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email parentconnection@wpcp.org.

when your student is sick or absent for another reason

New Procedure: Effective Feb. 4, 2013, parents and guardians may no longer leave messages reporting student absences on the Attendance Hotline. To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Click here for Reason for Absence Note.

Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

share stories and ideas for this newsletter

Please send us current Payton news to share with other Payton families. Here are the submission guidelines:

Less is more -- 200 words or less works best in an e-newsletter. If that's not enough room to tell the whole story, include a phone number, email address, or web link for more details. Send text as a Word attachment or type it into the body of your email.

Include a picture or two if you have them; send pictures as .jpg attachments, not embedded in a Word document.

All submissions are due the 15th of the preceding month. Send them to

saluting fop 2012-2013 volunteers

No Matter How You Say It...

Parent and guardian volunteers were once again a crucial part of how Payton worked this year. Over 200 individuals answered our numerous pleas for help, from Registration before school started in Sept. through the upcoming Teacher Appreciation Lunch (see request for help in the Payton Community News, above right). And that number doesn't include those who helped with their children's teams, clubs, and other activities. The administration often tells us how lucky they feel that they can count on FOP to solicit parent and guardian volunteers for all of Payton's needs.

We'd particularly like to acknowledge the parents and guardians of graduating seniors -- thanks for all your help over the past four (or more) years! Among that group, a special thanks goes to Casey Hoogstraten, Laurie Flom, and Marla Kushner, who have all worn many FOP leadership hats over the past six to eight years. As for the parents and guardians of returning students, what are you waiting for?!  Send a note to  FriendsofPayton@gmail.com and let us know how you can help next year. See you in August!

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The Close of Another Great Year at Payton

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

Notable and quite impressive successes and experiences have been occurring around campus: many recent trips abroad (e.g. Rome, Prague, China), Physics Day, the Math Team took 8th place in state (the team chooses to compete in the division with the largest schools in the state), 6 sophomores will be competing in the National History fair, 'promposals' (the students are quite creative-you can see many of them on YouTube), a Payton student will be studying abroad as part of the State Department's Kennedy-Lugar Youth exchange, 109 Payton students were just named Illinois State Scholars, a Payton student was named the 2013 Illinois Chess Association Warren Junior Chess Scholar, a new class of National Honors Society members will be inducted shortly, and both the girls varsity soccer team and boys varsity volleyball team advanced to the State quarterfinal rounds.  Remarkably...this is the short, indicative list of accomplishments.

All of the above are wonderful and quite important. What is more important is how these successes came to fruition. Such accomplishments are the product of dynamic learning experiences that are enjoined by dedicated and talented students and faculty. Indeed, the true magic of Payton is not in lists of illustrious accomplishments, but in the interplay between its people. In my very first act as principal at Payton two summers ago, I e-mailed all of the students and asked them to define for me the elements of the Payton experience that were most powerful. Of the hundreds and hundreds of responses received, nearly all of the students said that for them, the most meaningful characteristic of the Payton experience was the connection they had with their teachers. The students said our faculty members are faithful guides on complex intellectual journeys...that they are persons who care deeply for the students...they know the material of their academic disciplines and they can help students come to know those concepts...that they are present for the students...they are funny...that they learn about and participate in the students' lives beyond the classroom. I concur with the students...we have remarkable educators at Payton who are dedicated to and talented in the craft of educating intrigued and intriguing adolescents. It is this interplay between student and faculty that is one of the defining elements of Payton.

Another critical component has been the ongoing, active support of Payton's parents and guardians...parents who continue to give so much to the students and faculty...by volunteering at so many different events and activities that Payton hosts, by cheering on and reveling in the talents of students at plays and concerts, by doing those seemingly small but important things that are elemental to the fabric of Payton (e.g. driving carloads of Payton student around town, opening your home to swarms of teenagers who raid your cupboards, writing a note of thanks to a teacher for their dedication to your child, dropping off some home-cooked treats for the faculty to enjoy, washing uniforms, keeping the ethical standards high at home, sharing your finances with the school so that we can continue to nurture programs, instilling strong habits of the mind and heart in your child). To be sure, all of the Payton people-students, faculty, parents and guardians play indelible roles in our programs and purposes. It is individual and collective talents of these folks that make Payton such a wonderful place of learning and experience.

A note to senior parents...thank you for four wonderful years and for all you have done for Payton's students and teachers. Of course, you are always welcome at Payton. And a particular note of thanks to the graduating parents from FOP...your efforts have been extraordinary, meaningful, and important. Thank you!

To all...have a wonderful summer, and thank you for all that you do to make Payton such a dynamic place.

Proud to be a Grizzly,

Tim Devine, Principal

It Ain't Over Til....

Even though the number of school days left is getting smaller, the number of volunteers the school needs keeps growing! We need several dozen Payton parents and guardians to help out between now and the first day of school on Mon. Aug. 26. Please consider signing up to help with one of the following activities - they are a great way to support Payton and to connect with other Payton families.

Teacher Appreciation Lunch, Jun. 12, 12-1PM.  This annual celebration of the teachers and staff who make Payton terrific includes, by tradition, homemade desserts that families send in. We need several volunteers to set up, serve food, and clean up on Jun. 12 and several to send in some homemade goodies - if you can help, please send a note to FriendsofPayton@gmail.com.

Welcoming Incoming Families. We are launching a new program to have current families welcome incoming families to Payton and help them get connected and involved in our school community.  We'll be emailing and calling families in August, greeting them at the Freshmen Pizza Party on Aug. 16, and then checking in with them a few times during the year. We need about 30 folks to pitch in to make this work -- if you'd like to be part of this exciting new project, send a note to FriendsofPayton@gmail.com.

Registration, Aug 12, 13, 14, 21. If you know the alphabet and want to help make sure all our kids are signed up to start school on Aug. 26, you are a perfect fit for helping with registration! The administration has asked us for 7 volunteers on each of the four mornings that returning students will be registering (SR 8/12, JR 8/13, soph. 8/14, and make-ups 8/21). If you can help one (or more!) morning, send a note to FriendsofPayton@gmail.com.

Ongoing Needs. We're running a little low on volunteers to help with several ongoing needs, including, among other things, data management, graphic design, and web content writing and design. If you have any experience or interest in any of these areas, or would just like to get more involved and aren't sure how, please send a note to FriendsofPayton@gmail.com and we'll put you to work!

CLUBS & SERVICE LEARNING
Payton For Hope

Payton 4 Hope is a service learning club dedicated to raising awareness about all types of cancer and cancer prevention. In addition to raising awareness at Payton and in the community, Payton 4 Hope regularly raises funds for organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Students in the club spend time digesting articles and watching Ted Talks and other informational videos about cancer, cancer research, and staying healthy. They also sponsor individuals participating in events such as Making Strides, which works to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. The club president is Nina Mesfin (JR). Ms. Jill Tani (Math) is the faculty advisor.

Payton 4 Hope's 2012-2013 Fundraising and Volunteer Events/Activities have included:

-Organized a "Pink Out" for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

-Sold bagels during all lunch periods for the annual Relay for Life event and raised over $200.

-Volunteered at the Bank of America's  Shamrock Shuffle where some runners raised funds for cancer-related charities.

-Volunteered at the American Cancer Society's annual Walk n' Roll.

-Hosted two dermatologists from Northwestern, Dr. Amin and Dr. Baker, as well as a skin cancer survivor, Ms. Sharon Markman (also the director of public affairs and communications at Northwestern Hospital's cancer center) who talked to the club about skin cancer and precautions to take now, as young adults, in order to better protect ourselves from this disease.

-Dr. Silvia Bicalho, mother of a Payton graduate, came and spoke to the group about breast cancer and also about how to lead healthy lives as young women.

-A student at Payton who had cancer when he was young shared his experiences with the group.

-Facilitated the Macy's Letter to Santa campaign at Payton, through which Macy's donated $1 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation for every letter written.

Kudos to Payton 4 Hope, where students are doing wonderful work in and for the Payton community.

PAYTON CLUBS & TEAMS
Payton's Sailing Team: Come Aboard!
Reported by Wade Wagner (soph), Captain of the Payton Sailing Team

The Payton Sailing Team was the brainchild of a few dedicated students with a deep passion for a sport Chicago is famous for, but that wasn't readily available to the Grizzlies. Beginning in the fall of 2011, WPCP changed all that by sanctioning a sailing team, coached by professional sailor Bobby Collins. (above center, with the Payton Sailing Team)

Practices are held out of Belmont Harbor 3-4 days a week. The team sails on two-man, 4.2 meter sailboats called 420's. Payton competes on the MISSA circuit with weekend regattas held in the mid-west. The team is co-ed with 50% of its athletes being new to the sport. In the first season Wade Wagner (soph) and Peter Beid (JR) qualified for fall Nationals and represented Payton in New Orleans. In its second year, the Division A team Wagner/Beid won the Illinois State Championship. Division B team, Jeremy Acosta (SR) and Sebina Van Mell (soph), captured second place. Payton also won the 2nd place Overall Team Trophy in the State Championship to become the youngest team ever to do so.

The Payton Sailing Team's primary goal for 2013-14 is to grow the team in number of sailors as well as skill level for each individual.  The nature of high school sailing is to teach and train its sailors, so little or no experience is necessary to join the team. Each practice and regatta is structured to provide opportunity for multiple skill levels to grow and compete. Within the MISSA circuit there are high-level national qualifiers that the best teams in the region show up to compete against. There are also JV events that beginning sailors can be competitive in and have a good time doing. WPCP

sailing is a flexible sport. The team asks that each sailor practice at least twice a week and choose to compete in the fall, spring, or both seasons. As well, sailors can go to as many or as few regattas as they wish.

Sailing is a fantastic sport that one can enjoy for a lifetime. It is also a sport one can enjoy at a varsity level in college. College sailing is a popular sport among some of the top schools in the country such as Harvard, Yale, MIT, Boston College, Stanford, Fordham, College of Charleston, USF, and many more.

To be a quality sailor you have to be smart and tactical, you have to be a quick decision maker and live with those decisions on the racecourse. Grizzlies are those kind of people. Payton has already produced fantastic sailors who started from square one and evolved into extremely competitive racers. There are many more students who have the same potential and we on the Payton Sailing Team hope to see them become the great sailors they can be!

More information on the program is available by clicking here.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
International Night Reflects Payton's Everyday Diversity

Payton celebrated International Night with food, activities, and performances. With help from parent and teacher volunteers, students raised over $3500 for Payton's international travel and Global Connections programs. International Night was a colossal success!

Highlights include:

▪ 500 guests

▪ 100 Student Traveler participants

▪ 20 clubs, seminars, and enrichment participants

▪ 65 student led food and activity tables

▪ 18 student performances

Bridget Veitch (mother of Zach, frosh) made a batch of 30 crêpes, served with Nutella, caramel au beurre salé (de Bretagne) or chocolat, sucre en poudre (powdered sugar), and crème chantilly (whipped cream). Next year she will make 50!

Attendees were entertained by songs including Psycho Killer, La Vie En Rose, and an original song about Rome, Samoan and Tahitian hula and K-Pop dances, and a lively geography quiz, complete with prizes, conducted by the energetic student emcees.

Many thanks to all who made International Night 2013 a success!

Student Travel Reflections

Payton's student travel groups put together reflections on their travels. They wish to share them with Payton parents and guardians to illustrate just how invaluable FOP financial support is, and how FOP's generosity has enriched Payton student learning. Youth Leadership Summit (July 11-13)

An upcoming Sister Cities International Youth Leadership Summit (Summit) open to high school students aged 14-18 years will provide youth with the tools to lead, network, and become informed global citizens! The Summit includes specially guided sessions where youth participants will role-play as a country representative at a convening of the United Nations. Youth will learn, debate, deliberate, and negotiate, as they play the role of an international diplomat. Sessions will culminate with the youth delegates passing a "formal" resolution on a global issue.

More information is available by clicking here. Feel free to contact Ms. Adrienne Tongate from Sister Cities International at 312-201-4530 with questions.

Have a wonderful summer!

Grizzly Teams
Finish Strong!

Soccer (Girls): ended a phenomenal run this season with a spot in the state's "elite eight." After winning a tough Sectional match against Whitney Young, the varsity squad advanced to the IHSA Super Sectionals - the first time in over a decade that a CPS team has advanced to this level of competition. The JV team, last year's city champions, ended a fabulous season with a heartbreaking loss in the 2013 JV City Championship finals where they lost 2-0 to Lane Tech. Look for the Lady Grizzlies to return a strong team next year!

Tennis (Boys): The team took first place at this year's City Championship, completing an undefeated season in its league this year. Nick Goralka (SR) claimed top singles honors at the Sectional tournament and advanced to the IHSA State Championship rounds.

Track (Girls): The Lady Grizzlies captured a respectable ranking of 21 in the state at the IHSA State 3A Championships in Charleston (and first among CPS teams at the event). Cameron Pettigrew (SR) nabbed second in the State with a 54.84 time in the 400m, and sixth place with a 25.16 time in the 200m.

Track (Boys): Payton's strong JV team qualified nine athletes for the Chicago City Championships held on May 3. The JV team placed 4th overall in a highly competitive field, with several top finishers: the 4 x 400m relay team, featuring sophomores Chris Herrera, Wesley Chan, Tyler Holloway, and Sam Lasota, took 2nd place, just three tenths of a second behind Lane Tech's blistering mark of 3:43.83. The 4 x 800m relay team - sophomores Chan, Ryan Harrington, Lasota, and Gabriel Rojas - took third in the city.

The Varsity team made a strong showing in its meet on May 4, placing ninth overall in a tremendously competitive field of 31 teams. Top varsity finishers were Alex Shields (JR), earning second place in the shot put event with a mark of 44'1"; and Evan Lowry (JR), taking fourth place in the 300m hurdles with a time of 42.55. Team members Lester Harris (SR) (triple jump), Lasota (800m) and Lowry (300m hurdles) are school record holders in their events. Both the JV and Varsity Track Teams are led by an amazing team of coaches: Mr. Thaddeus Rego (Head Coach), Mr. Darryl Townsend and Mr. Youssef Azmani.

Volleyball (Boys): Grizzlies netted City Championship titles at both the Varsity and Junior Varsity tiers. The JV team beat Lane Tech High School in two sets, while the Varsity team came back to beat Whitney Young in three sets to complete Payton's sweep of the titles. Earl Schultz (JR) finished with 15 kills and was named Most Outstanding Player in the city, Kheperah Ray (SR) put down a kill that gave the Grizzles a 13-12 lead that they would not relinquish.

Water Polo (Boys): The team completed a very successful season. They were edged out 14-10 in a gutsy performance against tenth ranked St. Ignatius, gaining respect from everyone in our section. The Boys finished the season with a school best record of 11 wins and 5 losses and were ranked fourth in CPS by ILPOLO.

Water Polo (Girls): The team is a joint enterprise with Jones College Prep, and it practices and hosts home games at Clemente's pool. The team started its season with a big win over Latin and finished the season over .500. Two key seniors, Samantha Blumenthal (Jones) and Priscilla Lavagnolli, will be missed next year but the team retains a strong core with goalies Alina Hillery (frosh) and Maisie Anrod (soph), as well as Anna Miller (JR), Bella Yeung (JR), Mara Hoplamazian (soph), Marlee Nork (soph) (All-City and All-Sectional Honorable Mention), Rebecca Sudworth (soph) (All-City Team Selection), Maia Taylor (frosh) returning next season. The team has come a long way since the start of the season and looks forward to "making a splash" in the next year.  Anyone interested in swimming, diving, or water polo should contact a current player or Coach Mac at mackvarilla@gmail.com.

Sailing: Payton finished the Sailing season with second place at this year's Illinois State Championship as Wade Wagner (soph) and Peter Bied (JR) won in the A division, and Jeremy Acosta (SR) and Sabina Van Mell (soph) placed second in the B division. Earlier in May, the Grizzlies claimed first place in the Pewaukee Yacht Club's May Madness Youth Regatta, an event attracting teams from as far away as Minneapolis.

2012-2013 Fundraising Roundup

Thanks to the 2012-2013 Fundraising Team and our supporters,

FOP had a remarkably successful fundraising year. Together we raised over $228,000 to support Payton educational and extracurricular programming. The funds will be used by the administration and faculty to furnish technology, lab equipment, sports related items, international travel scholarships and so much more.

The Payton community is grateful to the 100+ volunteers who worked on fundraising events this year. We began last fall with a letter campaign, followed by a phone campaign and finally the online auction and spring gala. In between, we ran three separate teacher wish list events. Thank you to everyone who supported these efforts. If you didn't have a chance to participate, or simply have forgotten to do so over the course of the year, it isn't too late. FOP's fiscal year ends on Jun. 30. Please click here to donate online, or email us at fopfundraising@gmail.com for further information.

NEXT MEETING ON JUNE 10
Local School Council Report

At the May 13 LSC meeting, Mr. Devine recounted spring athletic events, including the Brooks-Payton baseball game. He noted that Payton teams have played at Brooks nine times over the past two years, in various sporting events. Mr. Devine cited other notable events:
-Payton continues to bask in national press, most recently being ranked #45 in U.S. high schools by the U.S. News and World Report; -Six History Fair student projects have advanced to Nationals;
-Student programming for next year is progressing. The main change is the ability to have drama coursework count for the Arts requirement. A new computer science course will be added as well.

Mr. Devine advised that we now expect next year's budget to arrive from CPS on May 15. Significant progress towards finalizing Payton's CIWP (Continuous Improvement Work Plan) has been made. On receipt of the budget, further revisions will be incorporated and the LSC will complete its work.

Please come to the next LSC meeting on Mon. Jun. 10 at 6PM.
