two more ways to

to stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to: watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.

check grades + attendance online
ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton site.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email parentconnection@wpcp.org.

when your student is sick or absent for another reason

New Procedure: Effective Feb. 4, 2013, parents and guardians may no longer leave messages reporting student absences on the Attendance Hotline. To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Click here for Reason for Absence Note.

Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

share stories and ideas for this newsletter

Please send us current Payton news to share with other Payton families. Here are the submission guidelines:

Less is more -- 200 words or less works best in an e-newsletter. If that's not enough room to tell the whole story, include a phone number, email address, or web link for more details. Send text as a Word attachment or type it into the body of your email.

Include a picture or two if you have them; send pictures as .jpg attachments, not embedded in a Word document.

All submissions are due the 15th of the preceding month. Send them to

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Celebrate and Share Payton's
Spring Spirit

Dear Payton Parents and Guardians,

First thing...I will not belabor the media maelstrom much herein for, while important questions remain, Payton is a multifaceted place and other matters need and deserve highlight and textual conversation.  Two short notes:

-Amidst all of this, I am most proud of our students. They have comported themselves so well, in thoughtful and balanced ways. I am honored to be their Principal.

-The Brooks baseball game has been re-scheduled for Sat. May 11 at 7:00 p.m., under the lights, at Brooks. Our good friend D'Andre Weaver and I did not reschedule for political purposes or media points. Rather, the game was rescheduled because that's what you do when a game is cancelled. Come on out and enjoy a ballgame if you can. If you can't join us, take a look at the Payton calendar and come cheer another Grizzly athletic team.

Aside from the swirl around us, our mission remains clear and with many examples of how our students and faculty are prospering:

Spectacular Scientists: Many congratulations to the Payton Science Olympiad Team for taking 2nd place in the state competition! A few dozen Payton students took 1st-5th place medals in the competition. And thanks to their coaches Bill Lyons, Donna Figenshu, and Jackie Barge for leading the team.

Michael Caines: Three Cheers! Michael was understandably and justifiably named the promising new math teacher by the Illinois Council of the Teachers of Math. We already know of Michael's many talents as an educator, and we are pleased that others recognize his skillfulness as well.

Payton Players: Bravo to the Payton Players and Kevin Wasielewski and Kerry Catlin for performing a wonderful version of A Flea in her Ear.

Washington Post Rankings: Payton remains one of the top schools in the country, #7 in the Midwest, and #1 in Illinois. Congratulations to our students, faculty, and parents!  Such notices are rendered because of the types of spirited learning activities that occur in our classrooms every day

Gratulatum ("congratulations"): To Val Gemskie and her Certamen Team who have had excellent showings in recent competitions.

Cubby Stroll: This Friday! 1:20 first pitch against the Reds at the friendly confines. Particular thanks to the Hoogstraten gents (father-Casey; son-Daniel '13) for spearheading the event.

What a special place we have! Thank you for sharing your child(ren) with us. We are so fortunate to be part of their growth.

Go Grizzlies,

Tim Devine, Principal

PAYTON FACULTY IN THE NEWS

Kudos to Golden Apple Award Winner
Mr. Scott Galson!

The Payton community is extremely proud to announce that Mr. Scott Galson (Math) has won the 2013 Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence. On May 1, he was surprised with the award during his Honors Statistics class by David Vitale (President, Chicago Board of Education), Dom Belmonte (President/CEO of the Golden Apple Foundation), and some very proud statistics students.
Mr. Galson's success gives Payton the distinction of having the largest contingent of Golden Apple teachers in the state.

Mr. Galson is the chair of the Math Department, a math team coach, and an enthusiastic presence at Payton. In 2009, Mr. Galson was the recipient of the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement which recognizes the top AP teacher in each state. He also achieved National Board Certification in 2008.

Thirty two Golden Apple Award finalists were chosen from among 215 applicants who undergo a rigorous process of review and observation. Ten winners are chosen and they each receive a spring quarter sabbatical at Northwestern University, a cash award, and are welcomed into the prestigious community of Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators.

The Payton community congratulates Mr. Galson on the exceptional and well-deserved achievement of being named a Golden Apple winner!

Did You Know? PROTECTING OUR SCHOLAR ATHLETES
Concussion Awareness Presentation

Keeping Payton's scholar-athletes safe is the central message of our first-ever Concussion Awareness information session. Payton athletes participating in any sport are invited to attend and are encouraged to bring their parents or guardians. Speakers will include Dr. Marla Kushner, DO; Dr. David Guelich, MD, Chicago Orthopedics and Sports Medicine; Mr. Ryan Anderson, trainer with ATI Physical Therapy; and Mr. Tony Faltin, Head Coach, Payton Football and Wrestling. Join us on Mon. May 6 at 6:30PM in the Payton Recital Hall. Refreshments will be served after the presentation.

Dr. Kushner will outline what constitutes a thorough sports physical, including the importance of IMPACT testing in diagnosing and gauging the effects of concussions. Mr. Anderson will discuss the trainer's range of responsibilities in keeping Payton athletes healthy. Coach Faltin will identify what athletes can do to prevent injuries. He will also present equipment enhancements that are designed to keep students safe while they participate in sports such as football, baseball, soccer, and wrestling.

All incoming freshmen and current Payton student-athletes, and their families, are encouraged to attend. Payton is committed to taking every measure possible to ensure player safety.

The Concussion Awareness presentation is hosted by the Payton Football Program. For further information, contact Coach Tony Faltin at 312-718-7373 or tfaltin34@gmail.com.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY
Payton & Harper High Students
Share a Day and a Dialogue

After reading There Are No Children Here, Ms. Molly Spooner's (English) freshman literature class heard that the radio program "This American Life" was featuring Harper High School in a two-part story about the effects of poverty and violence on teenagers in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. They decided to listen to the radio broadcast, and compare its report on today's Chicago with Kotlowitz's book about Chicago's west side in the 1990's.

After listening to part one, Ms. Spooner asked her students to write a reflection on what they heard. When reading their work, she realized that the students were impressed by the Harper staff's dedication and the loving compassion they showed the students. Ms. Spooner decided to pull some quotes from their writing and, with their permission, she sent along the compliments about the staff and school culture to the principal of Harper High School. Ms. Spooner notes, "The principal disseminated my student's thoughts to the entire staff. A (Harper) creative writing teacher, who was also listening to the broadcast with her students, shared our writings with her students, who responded in kind. Much of what the Harper students said about the broadcast was that it failed to highlight the successes of students at Harper and the positive experiences they have. This presented a unique opportunity to talk about non-fiction and the construction of 'truth' in relation to author's purpose, which was central to our curriculum in the first place. My student teacher, Bryan Peters, and I met with the creative writing teacher, Tasha Robinson, and designed a meeting between our students."

On Mar. 29, Ms. Robinson brought about 20 students to a panel discussion at Payton and they responded to questions prepared by Ms. Spooner's students. During the presentation, students from Harper demonstrated the reality that what was true for some was not true for all. They drove home the idea that sometimes the stories that are told are simply the most dramatic version of events. An example: one focus of the radio show was that, for Harper High School students, gang affiliation and access to guns was a universal reality. The Harper students Ms. Spooner's class met did not all share that experience, although some certainly had.

The students' dialogue was engaging and positive and they moved into breakout groups moderated by the Executive Board of Payton's African American Club. During the group discussions, many students realized that the differences they initially assumed they had were not so vast. They found that, despite the different challenges they face in their communities, their age and mutual cultural interests make them much more alike. Ms. Spooner notes, "I believe, and heard from Ms. Robinson, that her students enjoyed being able to tell their version of events, rather than being hemmed in by the broadcast. I think our students were compassionate, and also realized that if they want to know the 'truth' about something, they need to keep researching rather than relying on a single source, or even a few."

Help Welcome New Families to Payton

Even though there is still plenty of school left in this school year, we're starting to look forward to next year.

In addition to the Freshman Orientation Pizza Dinner, we are hoping to have current families contact incoming families before school starts. We'll need over 30 volunteers to make calls in August and to participate in the Pizza Dinner. We'll provide talking points for the call, so if you can use a phone, love talking about Payton, and can join us for the Pizza Dinner (for Aug. 16), you are perfect for the job! If you'd like to get involved, please email us at  FriendsofPayton@gmail.com.
CubbyStroll PREPARING FOR GRADUATION EVENTS
Students are Walking for the Prom!

On Fri. May 3, Payton students will be strolling 4 miles to Wrigley Field to enjoy the Cubs 1:20PM baseball game against the Boston Red Sox. This is the annual, all student fund raising event.

We want all our seniors to be able to go to the prom, but the ticket price may be prohibitive for some. All money raised by seniors via the Cubby Stroll will go towards the cost of the prom. If 30 parents could give $100 each, we would be able to underwrite the cost. If you can't give $100, donations of any size are valuable. If you are not a senior parent/guardian but would like to contribute to the prom, please seek out a senior who is participating in the Cubby Stroll or you can email CaseyHoogstraten@gmail.com.

Thanks for helping make the prom a memorable experience for all our kids.

CLUBS AND ENRICHMENTS

Grizzly Debate Coach Brings  Experience to a Young Team

The Payton Debate Team is stronger than ever thanks to the dedicated efforts of teacher sponsor Mr. John O'Brien (Science) and Coach Avery Dale. Mr. O'Brien is new to debate and is impressed by the "well-earned swagger -- and the acumen of the team that sprung up this year." He looks forward to helping grow the team by recruiting, teaching and mentoring new debaters.

Coach Dale is a debate veteran. He began debating in the 7th grade and competed in the National Debate Championship Tournament in each of his last three years of high school, placing second in the country in his junior year and going to the quarterfinals in his senior year. Dale attended Northwestern University on a debate scholarship and debated all four years. He graduated in 2006 with degrees in political science and international studies. Dale continued to be active in debate as a volunteer judge for the Chicago Debate League. In 2010, he volunteered to help the Payton Debate Team and he became the team's coach in Sept. 2011. Dale focuses team practice on three main activities - substantive discussions about the topics and arguments; debate logistics such as terminology, rules, strategies and technique; and public speaking drills. In addition to coaching Payton's debaters, Dale is a full time student and will complete his Master's Degree at the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy in June.

Under the guidance of Mr. Dale and Mr. O'Brien, Payton's young team finished the season impressively at the Chicago Debate League Championships. Sophomores Cathleen Gui and Meg Young made it to the varsity quarterfinals, and freshmen Luis Collado and Matthew McColgan placed second in the JV league. Young took 9th place in the Varsity Speaker of the Year category and Collado placed 10th in that category for JV. Lenny Brahin (frosh) won the JV debater of the year. Coach Dale was awarded Adjudicator of the Year.

sports iconSPORTS UPDATES
Spring Rains Can't
Stop the Grizzlies

Volleyball (Boys):
The team is currently undefeated in its conference and has compiled a winning record in bouts against out-of-conference teams as well. The team will be carrying this stellar record into City Playoffs starting May 17, and then hopefully moving on to Regionals (May 20), Sectionals (May 24) and State Championships (May 31). Four seniors, Alex Bresler, Derrick Elkin, Mitch Laski, and Kheperah Ray will be moving on. Come see your graduating seniors play for the last regular season home game on Wed. May 1. The Grizzlies will take on Von Steuben for senior night.

Track and Field (Girls): The team sprints off to the CPS city championships Sat. May 4, with a number of athletes defending top-level seeds. Standout Sr. (and USC recruit) Cameron Pettigrew has garnered recent press attention - read about her accomplishments in the 200 and 400 meter events by clicking here. The team's busy month ahead includes Sectionals on May 11, and then IHSA State Championships on May 16-18. Go Grizzlies, go!

Tennis (Boys): Finishing up a phenomenal season, its best in recent memory, the Boys Tennis team is undefeated in the top CPS division. Stay tuned for more great things in the action-packed month ahead as the team runs up to the net at the St. Ignatius Invitational on Sat. May 4, the CPS Team Tournament on May 10-11, Sectionals the following week, and on to State May 23-25. Outstanding seniors include Nick Goralka (undefeated at 1st singles in CPS matches this season), Dan Asplin, Shaan Chadha, Matt Cullen andLorenzo Villegas. All graduating seniors will be sorely missed, but the team is developing a strong field of rising underclassmen rallied forward by a trio of coaches, Walt Kinderman, Matt Goralka and Sean King.

Soccer (Girls): The Lady Grizzlies are simply on fire this season, unquenchable by any slush or sleet Mother Nature has thrown. With a record of 8 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties, the Grizzlies head into the City Playoffs this week with excellent prospects for moving forward to win their first ever Super-sectional, coming up at the end of May. These goal-oriented girls are currently ranked #2 in the IHSA Norridge-Ridge Division 2A, and are helmed, in his first year as head coach, by the indefatigable Ante Cop (who played soccer professionally for Croatia, still plays indoor soccer professionally, and is the head assistant coach at Robert Morris College.) Coach Cop cites standout players on the varsity squad, Meredith Leon (soph) and Veronika Nowak (SR), and JV sophomores Clarke Silvers and Lizzie Walsh for tremendous efforts this season. Congratulations ladies, and keep on kicking!

Baseball (Boys): The Varsity team is 4-4 in conference play, led by seniors Sean Dyer, Alex Hurtado, Sam Lowenthal, and Jacob Shapiro. The injury bug took a bite out of the team early, but the players are on the mend. Antonio Nelson (SR) has helped stabilize the pitching rotation along with Dyer, Daniel Friedman (SR), Ivan Chen (JR), and Christopher Huerta (soph). There are three underclassmen in the starting lineup. In addition to Chen and Huerta, Bison Carcelli (frosh) has handled second base duties. Jack Brosnan (soph) has been doing an outstanding job as a reserve catcher called up from the Sophomore team.

Softball (Girls): The team continues to gain experience and tackle the challenges of erratic spring weather and scarce indoor practice space. Second year coach Nicole Saez (a former D-1 Howard University scholarship player) brings passion and toughness to leading the Grizzlies. The team recently won its first game, after some narrow losses to tough conference foes. The team was elevated to the top division this year, but these players are definitely not out of their league with dramatic improvements from pitcher Maya Rodriguez (JR), Abby Hancock (soph) behind the plate, circumnavigated by remarkably athletic and fast freshmen Alyson Fritzman and Dessiree Rivera. Coach Saez credits seniors Hannah AlvaradoHaley Hagopian, Elizabeth Hancock, Naomi Lazar and Yliana Velazquez for a tremendous job leading the team this year!

In other Payton sports news, coach and instructor

Mr. Eric Kuchii (Phys. Ed.) was cited recently in the local press as an "unsung hero" for his year-round, volunteer efforts coaching autistic youth for the Special Olympics. Click here to an article well worth reading that describes Coach Kuchii's wonderful work.

NEXT MEETING ON MAY 13
Local School Council Report

At the Apr. 8 LSC meeting, Mr. Devine reported on a few of the activities adding to our students rich educational experience: taking in a performance of Proof at the Court Theater, engaging in the Payton Humanities Festival, participating in the McCormick/Tribune journalism competition, and traveling abroad to Rome, Prague, or Granada in the Global Connections programs. On a more somber note, Mr. Devine confirmed that CPS has not yet released a budget for the next school year.

Ms. Sarah Diaz, Counseling Dept. Chair, gave a presentation on department activities this year, specifically addressing the college placement season and associated parent events, college fairs, and student town halls. As of Apr. 8, Payton seniors tallied 18 Ivy League acceptances, as well as 36 acceptances from highly selective schools including M.I.T., Stanford, and Northwestern. Ms. Diaz also highlighted department efforts outside of the college placement realm and their work to increase awareness of Payton's social and emotional counseling resources.

Ms. Pat Guizzetti, Chair of the Fine Arts Dept. addressed the department's successes and innovations, including the art show on report card pick up day, which was open to all students and featured 100 original art works. As the first chair of Fine Arts, Ms. Guizzetti is working to increase the visibility of arts and artists at Payton. An upcoming effort is the release of the 2013 PALM (Payton Arts and Literary Magazine) in May.

Please come to the next LSC meeting on Mon. May 13 at 6PM.
