payton community monthly meeting

wed. 1/09

The monthly Payton Community Meeting is a brief and informative opportunity to hear what is going on at school directly from our principal. The meetings start at 6PM and usually end by 7PM. The meetings are generally held on the first Wednesday of every month, but always check the monthly calendar (at right) in case the schedule has changed. All meetings are held in the Library.

The FOP Fundraising Team meeting will be held on Jan.9 at 7PM after the Payton Community Meeting. Everyone is welcome!

lsc meetings are open,       next is 1/14
Parents, guardians, and the public are welcome at Local School Council (LSC) meetings, which are held monthly in the Payton Library at 6PM.

The LSC is an elected body that has three main responsibilities: 1) School improvement planning (CIWP), 2) School budget, and 3) Principal evaluation, retention and selection.

All are welcome to attend and to comment during the "Public Comments" portion of the meeting.

two more ways to

to stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to: watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.

check grades + attendance online
ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton site.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email parentconnection@wpcp.org.

when your student is sick or absent for another reason

You must call the Attendance Hotline early in the morning of your student's absence: 773-534-0042.

Students must also submit a written note upon returning to school. Click here for Reason for Absence Note

share stories and ideas for this newsletter

Please send us current Payton news to share with other Payton families. Here are the submission guidelines:

Less is more -- 200 words or less works best in an e-newsletter. If that's not enough room to tell the whole story, include a phone number, email address, or web link for more details. Send text as a Word attachment or type it into the body of your email.

Include a picture or two if you have them; send pictures as .jpg attachments, not embedded in a Word document.

All submissions are due the 15th of the preceding month. Send them to

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Be A Part of the Annual Payton Gala

Payton Parents and Guardians,

As we turn the calendar to a new year and we begin to look towards the second semester, I first want to thank you for all of the time, talent, and treasure you have thus far selflessly offered to our Payton community. The individual and collective efforts of our parents and guardians have done so much to advance our mission. Our students and faculty are more able to delve into rich experiences because of your support. All that FOP does (reminder: FOP includes 100% of our parents and guardians) is meaningful, important, and very much recognized by everyone on campus.

I ask that you sustain or increase your participation in and support of our people and programs, for the ultimate beneficiaries are our students. An important upcoming event is our 13th annual Gala. We are seeking everyone's involvement in the event as the Gala is the largest FOP event of the year. We raise significant funds at the Gala and it is a terrific event for all of us to share in a wonderful evening together. More information about ways in which you can assist with the Gala can be found below in the newsletter.

On behalf of the students and faculty...thank you for all that you do.

Go Grizzlies,

Tim Devine, Principal

Sweetness Day

SAVE THE DATE: 3/4

Parent Volunteers Critical to Next
Sweetness Day

Plans are underway for Payton's 4th Annual Sweetness Day, 3/4/2013. This day of service honors Walter "Sweetness" Payton's strong community involvement and gives our students, teachers, staff, and administrators a way to work closely together on a shared goal, outside of their day-to-day routines. Whether it is working with young children, elderly adults, or cancer survivors, Sweetness Day connects the incredible people who spend their days at Payton to the incredible people who live, work, and play beyond our school's walls.

Parents and guardians can be a part of Sweetness Day by helping to identify community needs and service sites ahead of time, or by serving as chaperones on the big day: Mon. Mar. 4. To participate in this school tradition of community service, please send an email to FOPCommunications@gmail.com or contact Assistant Principal David Adamji.

Payton Poms & Cheer Teams Show Their Spirit

The Payton Cheer and Poms teams held their first annual Walter Payton College Prep Poms and Cheer Showcase on Nov. 30 in the Recital Hall. The goal of the fundraising event was to raise money to purchase the team uniforms needed for pom and cheer competitions.

The event included a break dancing performance by Jonathan Mayuga, the younger brother of Cheer Coach John Mayuga, and Poms and Cheer team members performed a variety of gymnastic moves and dances, from classical ballet to hip hop. Poms coach Kimberly Graves noted, "It was an awesome night and great community event. All the girls did a fantastic job representing Payton and showing school spirit." A packed house comprised of students, faculty, friends and family members came out to support the girls. The Poms team performed eight new dances and the Cheer team performed four cheers that included flying and gymnastics.

A record number of girls have joined the Poms and Cheer teams this year. They devote hours to preparing for competitions and cheering for the Payton football and basketball teams. "It is really great to see the growth of the program. We ended last year with only six athletes, and are now entering our competition season with 15 athletes. It is definitely a great year for Payton Athletics," Coach Mayuga added.

The girls also devote many hours to the community including a fundraising performance at Cornerstone Learning Center, a preschool program in Payton's neighborhood, and serving as ushers at a Purdue football game.

Taiwan Reflections &  Program News

Tainan group outdoor

Student reflection on Taiwan:

"...[W]hen we got to Tainan [a city in Taiwan], I was so thrilled when I got off the bus. The ambience was so beautiful...The school is very nice...very open. Rosary's (庞艾昕) apartment is really nice too. It's really big, on the tenth floor, and has a nice view. My window faces a small street down below and a pleasant view of part of the city. So when I got home, I settled myself, gave the Chicago souvenirs to my host family, and took a shower that I so desperately needed. They took me out to have some traditional Taiwanese breakfast. I had , 油条 wrapped in an omelet, a noodle/vegetable/tofu empanada thing, and some milk tea (奶茶). Everything was delicious. Then I went with Rosary to her Japanese class, ate lunch at this rice patty-burger place (called "Mos Burger"), and went back for her English class. Then, we went to a coffin-burger(棺材板)place for dinner. It was pretty shabby, in a tiny alley-like street, but the food was pretty good. We had some seafood dishes before we had the coffin burgers. The nightlife was really prominent. We went to go get some drinks, winter melon tea (冬瓜茶)after we ate...It tasted like something I tasted before..."

NEXT MEETING ON JANUARY 14

LSC Report

At the Local School Council meeting on Dec.10 Mr. Devine confirmed that admissions for the 2013-2014 school year will be run under the same system as last year. He noted that efforts will be made to level out the class sizes so that each of Payton's four classes is approximately the same size (200+).

Mr. Devine announced that Ms. Molly Spooner (English) has earned her National Board Certification. With Ms. Spooner's achievement, Payton garners the distinction of being the high school with the highest percentage of National Board certified teachers in CPS.

A presentation about the English Department was given by Ms. Kerry Catlin (English) in which she described achievements and development plans for the department, including efforts towards department integration, expansion of the broadcast journalism program, and the goals for this year's Humanities Festival.

Concerns about high density traffic patterns around Payton, especially during rush hours, has led to efforts to create a traffic safety protocol. Payton representatives, along with those from other neighborhood schools and the community, will work to develop a plan that will ensure the safety of students, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in neighborhood.

Please come to the next LSC meeting on Mon. Jan. 14 at 6PM
