A Note from Jay
An Integral Part of Our Community

Another summer has come and gone and many of the businesses we work with tell us it has been one of the strongest in years. Unlike much of the Lower Cape, autumn marks the beginning of the busy season for the staff at the CDP. The "off-season" is a time when many of our clients are able to take a much needed deep breath and start to focus on growing an existing business or starting a new one. The CDP is a vital resource ready to support new ventures and business expansion with training, technical assistance and access to capital. We have a number of workshop planned for the fall and winter and you can read more about them below and on our website.

Autumn also marks the time when many restaurants begin to shut down for the winter. Devon's Restaurant at 401 ½ Commercial Street in Provincetown will turn their October 18th closing night for the season into a fundraiser for the CDP! Devon is generously donating the evening's entire gross receipts to the CDP and his wait staff will be donating their tips! So join us for a delicious and fun evening. Reservations are available beginning at 5:30pm by calling 508-487-4773.

And don't forget, on December 5th from 9AM to Noon, the Orleans Winter Farmers' Market opens for the season at the Nauset Regional Middle School. Your favorite vendors from last season will return, along with a few new vendors. Check out our website or follow the market on Facebook for more information.

As always thank YOU for your interest and support.

P.S. I'd be remiss not to thank and acknowledge all the folks who made our Summer Evening on the Farm such a success last month, one more time. The funds raised through the event support our work with local growers, food producers and shellfishermen. View pictures.

Safe, Stable & Affordable Housing
Thinking About Buying Your First Home...

If you or someone you know is thinking of buying a first home (or even if you've started the process), our First Time Home Buyer Education is for you! During this 3-part workshop, participants learn about:
  • Credit Health
  • Budgeting
  • Looking for, selecting & purchasing a home
  • Home Inspection
  • Home Energy Audits
  • Insurance Protection
  • Local Resources
Those who successfully complete the class are awarded a certificate of completion that may make them eligible for certain discount mortgage products.

One recent workshop participant commented, "This class was very informative even though we were already in the process of buying a house. I would HIGHLY recommend this class to anyone looking to buy a house. I feel like it could have really helped us if we took it prior to making an offer and signing the P & S agreement, but there was still a lot of informative information regardless."

The workshop begins on Wednesday, October 14th and continues on Monday, October 19th and Wednesday, October 21st.  All classes are from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the CDP Conference Room, 3 Main Street Mercantile, Unit 8 in Eastham.

Sign Me Up!   Contact Andrea at 508-240-7873 x10 or by email for more information.

To Note:  The Town of Provincetown's Community Housing Council recently voted to provide scholarships for Provincetown residents to participate in this workshop. The scholarship is on a reimbursement basis once the class is completed. If you're interested in this scholarship opportunity, please contact Michelle Jarusiewicz at (508) 487-7087.

Strong Local Businesses
Accessing Capital and Building Capacity
Micro Loan Recipient,
Rosie Hatch of Rosie's Landscapes

An article recently published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Bridging Disparities in Small Business Access to Capital, mirrors our lending philosophy so well we wanted to share it. To us, working with a business on financing is so much more than the loan. The comprehensive support services we offer with the loan--one-on-one technical assistance, networking opportunities and business education--help to build capacity and ensure a business is set-up for success. The "Four Critical Elements" outlined on page 2--Process, Products, Passion and Partners--are of particular importance to us. Our process is the cornerstone of our program. The types of loans (products) we offer are a direct response to gaps in the local market. Working with business owners who are passionate about what they do is not only energizing, but adds an element of personal investment that is critical to the process. And our partners, local banks and more established small business owners, are essential to the program's success.

A Sustainable Future
Celebrating Aquaculture

Shellfish beds
Did you know it's the 35th Anniversary of the National Aquaculture Act? Likely many of us were not aware there was such an Act. However, 35 years ago, through this Act, Congress deemed it "in the national interest, and...the national policy, to encourage the development of aquaculture in the United States." And it worked, as you can read in much greater and fascinating detail on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) webpage. Productions rates have grown by leaps and bounds, technologies have improved, scientific research has expanded opportunities...Now let's bring it to the local level. With recent challenges within the traditional fishing industry, more stringent regulations and less fish to catch, aquaculture (particularly shellfish aquaculture) has been a sustainable business alternative or addition. And aside from the economic benefits, with a demand that remains consistently high, there are environmental benefits. Shellfish improve water quality, shellfish reefs can protect against storm surge and provide habitat for other fish. Through our Business & Credit Program, we're pleased to have the opportunity to support a number of shellfishing businesses within what continues to be a growing sector of our local economy.
