A Note from Jay
An Integral Part of Our Community

The busy summer season is at full throttle as I write. Many of the entrepreneurs we support are reporting that business is strong--they are hopeful for a record breaking season. That's the nature of much of our economy on the Lower Cape. The busy summer season is critical to success. While tourists are an important part of the summer season, equally important are our seasonal residents.

This is true for the CDP as well. My experience is that many of our seasonal residents are keenly aware of the challenges faced by far too many of our neighbors--working hard to earn a living in the short summer season and struggling to find a safe, affordable place to live year round. Many of the CDP's donors and volunteers are seasonal residents who are inspired to contribute to the work we do to support local business, provide more affordable housing and create a sustainable future for our region.

Recently, a CDP donor shared with me how hard it is to respond to all the worthy non-profits on the Cape. "I want this special place to remain special for me, my kids and my grandkids," he said. "And I know the CDP is working hard every day to make this community sustainable by helping small businesses thrive and creating more affordable places to live. I know that in supporting the CDP I am investing in this community that has given so much to me and my family."

Seasonal residents are an important part of our community and we are grateful to have them as partners in the work we do to create opportunities for people to live, work and thrive on the Lower Cape.

As always thank YOU for your interest and support.

Safe, Stable & Affordable Housing
Lottery Opens for Affordable Rentals in Provincetown

We are currently accepting applications for an affordable rental housing lottery in Provincetown. The lottery is for three one-bedroom condos at the Grace Gouveia Building at 26 Alden Street in Provincetown.

The historic Grace Gouveia Building is currently undergoing total renovation to create new condominiums. Located in the "heart of Provincetown"--geographically and culturally--these tastefully renovated residences are expected to be ready for occupancy this fall. The building is named in honor of Grace Gouveia, a beloved teacher, poet, and social activist who immigrated from Portugal to Provincetown in 1915, at the age of 6.

Information sessions will be held at the Provincetown Public Library on Saturday, September 12th 2015 from 1:00-2:00 PM and on Wednesday, September 23rd 2015 from 5:00-6:00 PM.  The application deadline is Wednesday, October 14th 2015 at 3:00 PM.

Strong Local Businesses
Comprehensive Business Support
Click the picture to read more about Rashida

Rashida Jamieson, owner of Provincetown Alterations, is one of 73 small business owners we worked with over the past year through our Business & Credit Programs. To grow her fledgling business, Rashida utilized many of the comprehensive services we offer--including one-on-one technical assistance, business workshops and financing. We were able to offer this support to Rashida and other Lower Cape business owners because we are a recipient of Mass Growth Capital Corporation's Small Business Technical Assistance Grant Program. This funding allowed us to help create 31 jobs on the Lower Cape, and preserve 17. We also made loans to 9 businesses totaling $208,000.

We're pleased to announce that we were recently awarded funding for the coming year. The grant program is funded through the State Budget. During Budget process, State Senator Dan Wolf and Representative Sarah Peake advocated to ensure this integral program was once again included the Fiscal Year 2016 budget. Their leadership helped make this happen and we thank them.

You can read more about how the grant program supported Rashida and small business owners around the state here

Down on the Farm

from last year's event

We're winding down summer with a celebration of our work to support local farmers, food producers and shellfishermen at our 2nd Annual Summer Evening on the Farm on Wednesday, August 26th from 5-7 PM. Guests will enjoy tasty local bites and cocktails at the beautiful Halcyon Farm  in Brewster. There will be an opportunity to meet local growers, shellfishermen and food producers, and to network with others interested in the local food movement.

Set on one acre off of Main Street in Brewster, Halcyon Farm offers diversified organic vegetables. The Farm's produce can be found at the Orleans and Wellfleet Farmers' Markets, as well as through their seasonal CSA Program. Farm owner, Lucas Dinwiddie, received a Micro Loan from the CDP in 2013 to grow his business.

CDP Executive Director, Jay Coburn commented, "I can't think of a better way to celebrate the CDP's work with local growers, shellfishermen and food producers than a summer evening at Halcyon Farm. Supporting hardworking and innovative entrepreneurs, like Lucas, with micro loans, technical assistance and the CDP's Orleans Winter Farmers' Market is critical to creating a vibrant and sustainable year round economy on the Lower Cape."
