A Note from Jay
Kudos to Our Local Business Community

One of our top priorities here at the CDP is supporting local businesses. We do this through our training, education and loan programs. We also support local businesses by using them as vendors for our programs. From trash removal services for our affordable rental homes to printers for our fund raising appeals and annual report, we "buy local." And we buy local because so many of our local businesses support the CDP.

This year, a record 36 local businesses sponsored the CDP's participation in the 23rd Annual Bob Murray Housing with Love Walk. Together, they have contributed $13,000 to help the CDP provide safe, affordable, year round places to live for our low- to moderate-income neighbors. Several businesses sponsored the Walk at the $1,000 level and will receive a $500 state tax credit through the CDP's participation in the Community Investment Tax Credit Program.

Local business also provide the CDP with in kind contributions that support our efforts or help us with special fundraising events. Our 3rd Annual July 4th Fireworks Benefit was hosted by Land's End Inn in Provincetown and a host of local businesses donated food and drink for the event, as well as items for the silent auction. This event raised over $4,000 for the CDP.

As always thank YOU for your interest and support.

Strong Local Businesses
Funds Support Fishing Business
Mike Russo
Mike Russo and CDP Executive Director, Jay Coburn

Mike Russo has been fishing for over three decades. He's a groundfisherman--targeting pollock, cod, white hake and haddock. More recently, he's been finding it necessary and more profitable to go further offshore from his port in Provincetown to catch these species--with trips up to five days. To ease these longer trips, Mike needed to make some improvements to his boat, F/V Gulf Venture. While seeking financing he became aware of the Groundfish Revolving Loan Fund we administer through the MA Division of Marine Fisheries. According to Mike, "the program was a good fit." Through the program, groundfishermen are able to make boat repairs and improvements, buy quota, refinance debt and lease quota or days-at-sea. With the loan he received, he has been able to insulate the fish hold in his boat, increase the boat's net carrying capacity to carry more gill  nets and rebuild the main engine and transmission. And so far this season, everything has gone as planned as a result of the changes. Mike commented about the loan, "The biggest thing for me was the ease of working with the CDP Business & Credit program staff. It went very smoothly. They listened to what I had to  say about the business and respected it. We learned a lot from one another and I'm really grateful."

A Sustainable Future
Farmers Markets Boosting Local Economies

Have you visited a Farmers Market this summer? With more and more communities offering Markets--including many on the Lower Cape--their positive effects are being felt on local economies. The Farmers Market Coalition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening farmers markets across the United States, put together this piece highlighting how Farmers Markets are stimulating local economies. During our first season with the Orleans Winter Farmers' Market we too began to see indicators of positive local impact. With an average weekly attendance of 300 consumers and 20 vendors, there was the added revenue but that was not all. The connections that were made, the education that was shared, and the relationships that were nourished are factors that will have a lasting impact in our community and on our economy. So as we indulge in the bounty of locally grown produce this summer and prepare for the second season of the Orleans Winter Farmers' Market it is with the knowledge of how it is strengthening our community.
