A Note from Jay
Join Us!

In October, we began work on a series of short videos to help us better share how the work we do at the CDP creates opportunities for people to live, work, and thrive on the Lower Cape. The videos are now complete and I hope you will join us for the World Premiere at our Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting is on Wednesday, April 1st at 5:30 PM at Ardeo's Captains' Cafe at Captain's Golf Course in Brewster.

Our Annual Meeting is a great celebration of the work we've accomplished during the past year--accomplishments so many of you helped us make possible. As part of the meeting we also have the pleasure of recognizing outstanding members of our Lower Cape community. This year we are honoring longtime affordable housing advocate extraordinaire, Paul Ruchinskas with the Gwen Pelletier Award for Excellence in Community Service. And business owners Tom Boland & Jim Farley of Far Land Provisions in Provincetown are this year's deserved recipients of the Norm Edinberg Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship.

You can learn more and buy tickets by clicking here. I look forward to seeing you then!

As always thank YOU for your interest and support.

With Special Thanks to our Annual Meeting Sponsors

Safe, Stable & Affordable Housing

Rehab - Whelan Tour
We enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with the new State Representative for the 1st Barnstable District, Tim Whelan. Representative Whelan joined Jay and our Director of Housing & Energy Efficiency Programs, Abigail Chapman, to meet some of the homeowners we've worked with in Dennisport through the Housing Rehabilitation Program. During conversations with the homeowners, and one of the program's contractors, Rep. Whelan learned Rehab - Whelan Tour 3more about how this invaluable program is helping to keep families in their homes, and injecting money into the local economy. New roofs, windows and siding; upgraded septic systems; lead abatement; and energy efficiency upgrades are some of the ways this program is helping to preserve affordable homes for the long run. The program is supported through a Community Development  Block Grant from the State of Massachusetts.

And right now we have opportunities for qualified homeowners and landlords in Harwich Center and Dennisport to participate in this program. Don't wait to get involved!

You can find out more at our website or by contacting our Housing Rehab Program Manager, Jean Stanley at (508) 240-7873 x14 or by email.  Please help spread the word!

Strong Local Businesses
Creating a 'New' Life
Lola's Local Food Lab

When Kim Shkapich re-located to the Lower Cape from New York City almost a decade ago, she was prepared to 'reinvent' herself. She had had a thriving career in the city, but it was time for something new. Her background and expertise is in architecture and design. But, she had life-long talents for cooking and preserving-skills she had learned as a pre-teen from her working mother. She knew she wanted to

incorporate these skills into her new

livelihood. So shrubs and rubs, drinking vinegars, spices, and jams and jellies became her focus.

Creating the products came naturally to Kim, but on the business side she needed some support. Early on she participated in the CDP's Smart Start workshop and SCORE Cape Cod's business planning series. From these she learned some business basics to kick start her business, Lola's Local Food Lab. Next, she started meeting monthly with SCORE mentors at the CDP offices. During these sessions she receives individual guidance for her business. "The mentors have been helpful with the business structure and financials. They keep me on track", said Kim about the meetings. "They have also been so enthusiastic and supportive. With thought provoking conversations that provide me with a different perspective on the business, they have been a tremendous resource as my business has grown." Keep reading

A Sustainable Future
Go Green

Don't miss the opportunity to join the 100 Cape Cod businesses who have gone Cape & Islands Green at next month's workshop!

Some Benefits:

- Reduced costs through energy efficiency upgrades

- Increased competitive advantage
- New marketing opportunities
- Protecting the Cape's natural environment

Here's more about how it works:
To start the verification process, the CDP offers a Cape & Islands Green Level 1 Workshop. The workshop introduces participating business owners to sustainable business practices, with topics that include solid waste minimization, water and energy conservation, and how to market a green business. When verification is complete, business owners have new marketing opportunities available to promote their businesses, including promotion of the Cape & Islands Green brand in the broader sense by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and local Chambers, marking Cape Cod as an environmentally conscious business community and a green destination.

What people are saying:

"Thank you for educating me in practices that can reduce my impact on the environment. Your workshop was so informative, and the energy audit you recommended will be saving my business up to $2,200 a year in energy costs. I highly recommend the program for all businesses on Cape Cod. It's a great way to start becoming "green." Gary Palochko - Revere Guest House, Provincetown
