A Note from Jay
Investments in Our Community

We'd like to express our sincere appreciation to a few different funders for their recent support of our programs and services:

  • Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation (MGCC) awarded us $75,000 to support our work to strengthen Lower Cape small business owners through our Lending and Technical Assistance programs, and for our work to support Lower Cape fishermen. Thanks to the efforts of Representative Peake and Senator Wolf to increase state support for MGCC, we received a significant increase in funding this year.
  • A $75,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will support our work with Lower Cape fishermen and the Cape Cod Fisheries Trust.
  • Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Foundation awarded us a $10,000 grant to support our work to strengthen Lower Cape small business owners through our Lending and Technical Assistance programs.
  • A $10,000 grant from Cape Air will support our Cape & Islands Green Program on the Lower Cape.

Both the Cape Cod Five and Cape Air made significant increases in their support over last year thanks to the Community Investment Tax Credit which provides a state tax credit worth 50% of the value of contributions over $1,000. If you would like to support the work of the CDP and receive a tax credit, please contact me or click here for more information on this great program.

As always thank YOU for your interest and support.

Affordable Homes
Affordable Housing Summit Focuses on Regional Cooperation

Fred Bell Way, Wellfleet

A dedicated group of advocates for affordable housing on Cape Cod gathered in Orleans last week to discuss possible ways to approach the need regionally. Spurred by the Massachusetts Housing Partnership's Rural Housing Initiative, the intention of the meeting was to listen to the voices of rural communities regarding their specific needs around affordable housing. The group of 70 in attendance included elected officials from the state, county and towns; representatives from other housing and community-based organizations and faith based groups; and concerned citizens. Group conversations started with a focus on need, particularly highlighting the need for a greater number of affordable rental opportunities. Conversations then shifted to potential regional and inter-municipal approaches to provide more affordable housing within the Lower Cape community. CDP Executive Director Jay Coburn said, "The Summit was a great success and brought together the region's leaders in creating affordable housing on the Lower Cape. We were particularly pleased to have Senator Wolf and Representatives Peake & Turner with us to hear about the challenges we face in creating more affordable housing." With the group planning to meet again, we will continue to provide information as the conversation evolves.

Independent Spirit Fuels Local Small Business

Rosie and her New Dump Trailer
Rosie Hatch has been in the landscaping business for a dozen years, but it wasn't until the last few that she decided to make some changes and focus on growth. With a business based in the beautiful outdoors of Cape Cod, the freedom and flexibility this type of business provides is important to Rosie. In 2012 she strategically renamed the company Rosie's Landscapes so her customers and potential customers could identify her with the company, and with her quality of work. Earlier this year, Rosie started meeting with the CDP's Business & Credit Programs staff to prepare for financing to purchase a dump trailer. After meetings to put together her business plan and analyze her finances, she received a loan from our Micro Loan fund. When asked how the investment helped her business, Rosie said, "It's like night and day. The trailer has helped me run the business like a landscaping company - to look and act more professional, be more efficient and make it easier for crew." She went on to comment about her support from the CDP staff, "They are the most supportive people in the world, and feel like family to me. They have been cheerleaders for my business, which has been super helpful."

Rosie's Landscapes focuses on landscape design, installation, stonework, yard maintenance and lawn maintenance. Find out more.

Taking It to the Next Level
Level 2 Logo
The more than 100 Cape Cod small businesses that have become Cape & Islands Green Level 1 verified over the past three years, including 73 on the Lower Cape, will have an opportunity to 'take it to the next level' later this month. A workshop focused on effective marketing strategies to promote their green businesses, and new practices in energy efficiency and solid waste management will prepare participants for a Level 2 verification. According to the CDP's Director of Business & Credit Programs, Sheila Hoogeboom, "The Cape & Islands Green Program was created with the intention of offering graduated levels of verification, depending on a business owner's interest and commitment. With such a volume of Level 1 graduates and an interest from them to learn more, it became evident that the timing for a Level 2 class was upon us." The workshop features a talented and experienced group of presenters, including:
  • David Quinn, Barnstable County- Regional Waste Reduction Coordinator
  • Nicole Price Voudren, Cape Light Compact- Commercial & Industrial Program Planner
  • Kate Sheehan, Telltale Media
  • Pam Andersen, CDP- Business & Credit Program Manager
