A Note from Jay
A Busy Fall...

We have an incredibly busy fall planned here at the CDP with several new initiatives. We are very excited to be working with our State Senator Dan Wolf and Representative Sarah Peake to convene an Affordable Housing Summit on October 16th at the Nauset Middle School in Orleans and hope to inspire local officials and community leaders to re-double efforts on the Lower Cape to create more affordable homes. Read more below

With a slow but steady improvement in the economy, we are seeing more interest in starting new businesses. In an effort to provide support and build community among entrepreneurs on the Lower Cape, we will be offering a 3-part Smart Start workshop. You can read more and find out how to register below.

Enjoy the best month on Cape Cod and as always thank YOU for your interest and support.

Affordable Housing Summit

The conversation around affordable housing on the Lower Cape is not a new one. However, we are excited about an opportunity to move from conversations to actions. On Thursday, October 16th from 4 to 6 PM at Nauset Regional Middle School, Senator Daniel Wolf and Representative Sarah Peake, with support from the CDP and Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP), will bring together affordable housing stakeholders, town elected and appointed officials and community leaders on the Lower Cape for a "Lower Cape Summit on Affordable Housing Issues" in hopes of generating new thoughts and opportunities in this realm. This forum is part of a series of meetings being held in other rural communities in the Commonwealth as part of MHP's Rural Housing Initiative. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage in conversation about the current affordable housing issues facing the Lower Cape, including exploring a regional planning strategy focused on the Lower Cape's affordable housing needs. A focus of the gathering will also be on the work completed by MHP on their Rural Housing Initiative, including an opportunity to provide feedback. Please consider joining the conversation.

Setting Up Your Start-Up for Success

small business representation Starting a small business is a significant undertaking, and one with which we are quite familiar at the CDP. In the past year alone, our staff has worked with eight individuals as they started their own businesses. One of the most important factors to success in such an endeavor is having a well thought-out and strong plan. The CDP's Director of Business & Credit Program, Sheila Hoogeboom commented, "Much of the support we provide for individuals starting small businesses is around planning." She goes on to highlight the following three items as of critical importance for long-term success, "Having a clear vision that has been tested and refined; creating a good team - a strong network of service providers and mentors you can rely on for support; and keeping good records, that you also know how to analyze."  All of these topics and more will be covered this Fall in our Smart Start workshop. So if you're thinking about starting a business or in the early stages of business development this 3-part workshop is for you. Set up your start-up for success. Workshop details

Sustainability

A Growing and Sustainable Industry

Shellfishing has long been a tradition on the Lower Cape and, for some, a way of life. Recognized as a sustainable industry due to its low impact on the marine environment, shellfishing is an attractive and potentially profitable fishery for shellfishermen. And, in the past two decades the Cape has experienced a surge in shellfish growers. According to a presentation by the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, the number of  bushels harvested from the Lower Cape increased over 600% (4,348-31,798) between 1989 and 2010. Along with this growth comes change - particularly regulation change. New food safety regulations have affected the industry and the operations of these local businesses. These regulations require shellfishermen to make capital expenditures to cool all shellfish upon harvest, invest in higher quality seed, and comply with traceability and record keeping requirements. Through our Business Technical Assistance and Micro Loan programs, we've had the opportunity to assist shellfishermen as they make the transition to comply with new regulations, recently making three loans totaling $42,000 and preserving 5 jobs. You can listen to more about the local shellfishing industry and regulation changes on a recent edition of This Place Matters with guests John Brawley, Shellfish & Aquaculture Specialist with SPAT and Julian Cyr, Director of Policy and Regulatory Affairs with MA Department of Public Health.
