A Note from Jay
Our Natural Resource Based Industries

This Spring, the CDP received a 50% increase in our support from the US Department of Agriculture's Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program, and a $5,000 grant from the Cape Cod Economic Development Council to expand our work with local growers, shellfishermen and food producers. Local food production and aquaculture are growing sectors in the Lower Cape economy and we are pleased to be making strategic investments in these emerging businesses.

In the past 2 years, we've loaned over $90,000 to six farming and food-related businesses. From a one acre organic farm to three shellfishing businesses and a bean-to-bar chocolate producer, we are creating opportunities for new food related businesses to thrive on the Lower Cape. And I'm very excited about two new initiatives: a Winter Farmers' Market in Orleans - beginning this December - and a feasibility study to create a network of existing commercial kitchens available for use by local food producers.

On Wednesday, August 27th from 5 to 7 pm, I hope you will join me to celebrate our work at "A Summer Evening on the Farm." Hosted by Halcyon Farm on Route 6a in Brewster, the event will feature food from area restaurants using local produce, a raw-bar and beer & wine. You'll have a chance to meet local growers and food producers and learn more about the Orleans Winter Farmer's Market. For tickets or more information, click here. Enjoy the remaining days of summer and all of the great locally grown food!

As always, thank YOU for your support and interest.

Affordable Homes
It Takes a Community
    Nancy Govoni
It's not every day you meet someone who has lived in the same location for over 50 years, but we had the opportunity to do just that recently through two programs we work on - the Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program and Home Modification Loan Program. Local seamstress and long-time Cape Codder, Nancy Govoni needed some work done on the home she and her husband built when they moved to the Cape in 1963. Through the Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program she was able to access new siding and windows for the home, in addition to critical electrical upgrades. While on the job, the CDP's Director of Housing & Energy Efficiency Programs, Abigail Chapman, also noted Nancy's walkway and ramp, necessary for her visual impairment, were in need of repairs. She introduced Nancy to the state's Home Modification Loan Program, through which Nancy is working on getting these vital repairs done. And there's more to this story.

During the job, items needed to be  relocated to make room for the contractors to do their work. Some of the Harwich firefighters, who 'watch out' for Nancy, volunteered their time to make this happen. And, it turns out that years earlier Nancy had made the wedding dress for the wife of one of the contractors. Pleased with the work, Nancy commented, "everyone was as helpful as could be and very thorough."
Thanks Nancy for allowing us to share this great story of our community coming together to help a neighbor!

Business Development
New Business in Town

This summer Wellfleet has a new addition to its diverse array of businesses. Focused on contemporary women's clothing, Salt offers a unique and fun shopping experience in a carefully curated space featuring clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Siobhan Doane - a native Cape Codder and first time business owner - had been thinking about going into business on her own for three years. After more than a decade away, it felt like the right time for her to return home and open up shop. Prior to opening her store on May 1st, Siobhan took advantage of the individual business counseling we offer with Cape Cod SCORE. During her meetings with the SCORE counselors, Siobhan worked on her business plan with a particular focus on inventory, buying and financial projections. When talking about her sessions with SCORE, Siobhan said, "It was good to get feedback, bounce ideas around and refine my business plan." You can find Salt and Siobhan at 55 Commercial Street in Wellfleet.

If you're thinking about opening a business or would like some guidance for your current one, click here or see below to find out about upcoming dates for business counseling sessions with SCORE.

Sustainability

Cape & Islands Green

You've read features in this e-newsletter about many of the 73 businesses on the Lower Cape that have become Cape & Islands Green verified. We thought it would be a good opportunity to tell you more about the program itself.

Cape & Islands Green helps participating business owners reduce costs, increase their competitive advantage and open new marketing opportunities, while protecting the Cape's natural environment. To start the verification process, the CDP offers a Cape & Islands Green Level 1 Workshop. The workshop introduces participating business owners to sustainable business practices, with topics that include solid waste minimization, water and energy conservation, and how to market a green business.  Read More.

When verification is complete, business owners have new marketing opportunities available to promote their businesses, including promotion of the Cape & Islands Green brand in the broader sense by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and local Chambers, marking Cape Cod as an environmentally conscious business community and a green destination.

Feedback from Cape & Islands Green verified business owners has been positive, with reports from one business of waste removal and utility cost savings at $3,300 over two years because of changes implemented through the program. Verified business owners have also reported success in leveraging the green verification as part of their marketing efforts. And Judy Tarr from Cape & Islands Green verified business, Ben & Jerry's in North Eastham reported that the team building among her staff has been another great advantage, and that the recycling initiatives are following her staff home as awareness of their fragile environment has increased.
