A Note from Jay
The Growing Need for More Affordable Homes

$24.37 an hour. That is what a family on Cape Cod must earn working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year in order to afford rent of $1,267 a month for a two-bedroom apartment. Someone working for minimum wage would have to work 91 hours a week to afford a one bedroom apartment renting for $945 a month. And we all know rental apartments that are available year-round are a hard thing to come by on the Lower Cape. We have an affordable housing crisis on the Lower Cape and despite the efforts of the CDP and many other individuals and organizations in our community, the need for more affordable housing continues to grow.

It is this urgent need that is motivating CDP Board Members, volunteers and staff to participate in the 22nd Annual Bob Murray Housing with Love Walk, July 14th to the 21st. Thanks to generous sponsorships from local businesses and contributions raised by our sixteen walkers, the CDP has raised over $14,000 towards our goal of $15,000 to support the 70 affordable rental homes that we provide for families on the Lower Cape. This year's Walk is expected to raise over $200,000 to support ten affordable housing agencies serving Cape Cod, bringing the collective total raised over twenty years to more than $4 Million.

Equally important, the Housing with Love Walk raises much needed awareness about the need for safe, stable and year-round homes for our low and moderate income neighbors on the Cape. More affordable homes mean a stronger and more diverse community and more successful small businesses whose employees can live in the town in which they work. I hope you will continue to support our efforts to create opportunities for people to live, work and thrive on the Lower Cape.

As always, thank YOU for your support and interest.

Business Development
Supporting Local Growers and Food Producers

farmer market
Over the past few years there has been an increase in activity in local farming and food production. The current number of local Farmers' Markets is one telltale sign. Another, for our staff at the  CDP, is the number of food and farming businesses coming to us for one-on-one technical assistance, loans and workshops. In addition to business support services, a need we've identified with these typically seasonal businesses is an extended season. With support from the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program, we're working on a way to make this happen. This Winter, in collaboration with a committee of experienced, local farmers and Market Managers, we are launching the Orleans Winter Farmers' Market. The first of its kind in this area, the Market will provide an opportunity for local growers and value added producers to grow their businesses, and for local consumers to access fresh, local produce year-round. The Market will be held in Orleans at Nauset Middle School on the first and third Saturdays beginning on December 6, 2014  through April 18, 2015 from 10:00 AM to Noon. Applications are currently being accepted for Market vendors. They can be accessed on our website.

Community Bank Makes Green Commitment

Seamen's Bank has been a strong community advocate since its incorporation 163 years ago. They recently took their commitment to the community to another level when all four of their branches became Cape & Islands Green verified. Through verification, bank employees have committed to operating  practices that reduce their impact on the environment. Seamen's Bank Vice President, Lori Meads commented, "It is important for our customers and our community to know that Seamen's is conscious of the environmental challenges of the Cape and being responsive to those issues."

The Bank's efforts to preserve the environment and support our community are significant. They are a true community leader.

The CDP's team will walk in relay fashion through the Lower Cape portion of the walk. Starting in  Provincetown and ending in Harwich, the team will walk a total of 44 miles over three days!
