A Note from Jay
Busy and Exciting Summer

Summer is finally hear and we have a number of great ways for you to connect with us and support our vital work in expanding opportunities for people to live, work and thrive on the Lower Cape!

On the Fourth of July, our friends at Provincetown's Land's End Inn will host a Fireworks Viewing Party to Benefit the CDP. With great food and drink, a raw bar and Peter Donnelly & John Thomas singing selections from the Great American song book, the event is a great way to celebrate the 4th and support the CDP. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Dust off your walking shoes for the 22nd Annual Bob Murray Housing with Love Walk, July 14-21st, when affordable housing advocates will walk from Provincetown to Woods Hole to raise awareness and much needed funds to benefit the CDP and ten other non-profit organizations working to create and provide affordable homes on the Cape. A number of CDP Board & Advisory Council Members, Staff, and friends are collecting pledges to benefit the CDP. Click here to make your pledge or contact us if you'd like to walk with us. And we'd like to extend a big thank you to our Walk Business Sponsors!

For the second year, 22 Lower and Mid- Cape restaurants are asking their guests to support the CDP and three other agencies serving our low income neighbors through the Making Ends Meet Campaign. Diners at these community-minded restaurants are asked to leave some money behind to support the work of the CDP, Community Action Council of the Cape and Islands, the Family Pantry of Cape Cod and WE CAN. Click here for a list of participating restaurants. Thank you to the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation Trust and Wicked Local for sponsoring this important fundraising campaign.

So, it looks to be another busy and exciting summer. And I hope to see you at one of our events!

As always, thank YOU for your support and interest.

Affordable Homes

Eastham Increases Affordable Housing Stock

Massasoit Road, Eastham

We've been working with the Town of Eastham's Affordable Housing Trust over recent months as they've acquired new properties to rent at affordable rates. "This is a great example of a partnership between one of our Lower Cape towns and the CDP to make more affordable rental homes available" said CDP Executive Director Jay Coburn.  "We so appreciate the hard work of the volunteer members of the Trust in acquiring these properties, and the CDP greatly benefits by growing our property management department."

The CDP's Director of Housing and Energy Efficiency Programs, Abigail Chapman, has been overseeing the rehab work at some of the properties, including septic upgrades, bathroom renovations and accessibility. Once the work is completed, these homes will be added to the 70 affordable rental homes on the Lower Cape already managed by the CDP.

Business Development
Legislators Champion Small Business Funding
State House

For the past several months, we've been working with Representative Sarah Peake, Senator Dan Wolf, MACDC and CDC's from across the Commonwealth to secure funding in the State Budget for the Small Business Technical Assistance Program at Mass Growth Capital Corporation.  We're pleased to report that Representative Peake was able to secure the full $2 Million in a supplemental funding bill that cleared the House and Senate and was signed into law last month.  This amount represents a 160% increase in this important program that currently provides the CDP with $60,000 annually for our economic development work. An example of services we provide with this funding is one-on-one technical assistance with our Micro Loan recipients.  Recent loan recipient, Raymond Gentles commented, "I've focused my work mostly on painting because as the CDP staff and I reviewed my 2013 finances last winter we realized it is one of the main jobs that makes the most money in the timeliest manner. "

Many thanks to Representative Peake & Senator Wolf for this great victory and for their support of our programs and services to strengthen small businesses on the Lower Cape.

Sustainability

A Business Focused on the Past, Present and Future

For over six decades the Eastham Superette has been a significant fixture of the Eastham landscape. While it offers a variety of grocery items, it's much more than a grocery store; it's a gathering place with a strong history and community ties. So it was no surprise when the new owners, Sarah and Ed Wilcox, made a deeper investment in the community by becoming Cape & Islands Green verified. As part of their verification they've implemented a numbers of green initiatives. They've engaged with one of their suppliers (Associated Grocers of New England), from whom they purchase a multitude of products, to take back all of the cardboard and shrink wrap and other packaging their inventory arrives in, for free. The company, which is a cooperative they happen to be a part of, then sells this packaging on the market and the money goes back to the cooperative, ultimately increasing their buying power. With the amount they've reduced their trash, they are saving $50 per month on garbage removal. And not only are they reducing, but they're re-using. Their coffee grinds are used for compost and their produce scraps for chicken food at a farm in Orleans. As Sarah commented about their business practices since verification, "We're much more mindful." And how fortunate our community is to have a business so committed to its past, present and future.
