Preparing First Time Home Buyers
To complement our efforts to increase the affordability and availability of safe, stable year round housing for local residents, we offer First Time Home Buyer Education. The course provides information that is very important for someone buying a home for the first time, including:
FTHB Spring 2013
Spring 2013 Graduates
  • Credit Health
  • Budgeting
  • Looking for,  Selecting &        Purchasing a Home
  • Home Inspection
  • Home Energy Audits
  • Insurance Protection
  • Local Resources
Class graduates are also eligible to access affordable mortgage products, like the SoftSecond, a low-interest, low down payment mortgage with a fixed rate.

Class graduate and recent first time home buyer, Lindsey Oringer found the First Time Home Buyer program to be very helpful. "I learned a lot from the course that I may not have given thought to prior to purchasing a home", said Oringer. "Learning about the different types of mortgages available and which would be best for my situation made the process easier. It was nice to be able to qualify for such a low interest rate by having the certificate from the course.  I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is starting to consider, or even just thinking about buying their first home soon."

The next class will begin on Tuesday, January 7th at 6:00 PM and continue on Tuesday, January 14th and Thursday, January 16th, also at 6 PM.  Space is limited.  For more information and to register, please click here or contact Andrea at (508) 240-7873 x22.
Green Leaders
A natural fit for them, A3 Architects, Inc. became Cape & Islands Green verified earlier this year.  A3 is a full service architectural firm specializing in net energy zero design, passive house design and environmentally sensitive construction on Cape Cod, the Islands and southeastern Massachusetts.

Commenting about their Cape & Islands Green verification, A3 Owner and Architect, Alison Alessi said, "As an environmentally-responsible architecture firm, we strive to create energy efficient and many near net-energy zero projects on the Cape and beyond. Cape & Islands Green verification helped us to reinforce our commitment to sustainable business practices and hopefully, has helped us reach like-minded clients."

A3 has also worked with the CDP on housing development projects, including the creation of our LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certified Thankful Chases Pathway, a 12 home A3 Architectsaffordable rental neighborhood in Harwich.  And, they're a significant resource and a great friend.  We thank them for their staunch commitment to preserving our environment and strengthening our community.
Meet Scott Kerry
Scott Kerry has been a member of the CDP Board of Directors for eight years. During his tenure on the Board, Scott has chaired the Business & Credit and Asset Management Committees and is a member of the Executive Committee.

Scott is the President of Kerry Insurance Agency in Eastham. He joined the family's insurance business in 1994, and became the President in 2003. He is a 1989 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and received his MBA from Suffolk University in 2000. Scott has served on the Finance Committee for the Town of Eastham. He is currently the Vice President of the Board of the Cape Cod Insurance Agents Association.

When asked about the CDP, Scott said, "As a business owner and a resident of the Lower Cape, I can think of no other agency more committed to providing resources, education and technical assistance to our fellow small business owners. This, coupled with the commitment to home ownership, rental opportunities and housing rehabilitation makes the CDP a significant resource to our community."

A Special Thanks to Our Supporters
We'd like to express our sincere appreciation to a few different folks for supporting our work:

Sailors' Snug Harbor awarded us a $15,000 grant to support our work with the Cape Cod Fisheries Trust.

A grant from The Chapel of Saint James the Fisherman
will support Canal House, our transitional sober residence in Orleans.

We couldn't do the work we do without these investments from our community and we thank them!

Last Spring, I had the opportunity to welcome a room full of young people to the CDP's First Time Home Buyer class.  Like many in our community, I am concerned about the 26% decline of residents ages 25 to 44 in our region as reported in the 2010 census.  It left me hopeful to see that there are young people, working hard to create a future on the Lower Cape.  I'm looking forward to the CDP hosting another First Time Home Buyer class in the New Year.

The First Time Home Buyer class is one of many of our efforts to create opportunities for our low- to moderate-income neighbors.  From our Housing Rehab Program, which has allowed over 175 families to receive funds for much needed renovations on their homes, to our Micro Loan Program, which helps young entrepreneurs start or grow a business, the CDP is working hard to promote a vibrant and diverse Lower Cape Community.

None of this happens without the generous support of our community.  As you think about end of year gifts, I hope the CDP and the people we serve will be the beneficiaries of your generosity.  Have a Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for your continued support and interest in our work.
