Fisherman Starts Anew
Scott Nolan started fishing more than 25 years ago. Setting out from various Cape Cod and MA ports, he focused initially on sea clams, and then scallops. After a decade out of the business, Nolan came to the CDP in the Fall of last year with interest in a Micro Loan to support the retro-fit of a dragger to go sea clamming. According to Nolan, "It was a big project".  Sea clamming involves particular equipment, all of which needed to be outfitted on his newly purchased boat, the Goody Hallet. With business support and financing from the CDP and affordable rate quota from the Cape Cod Fisheries Trust, Nolan is now one of the few local small boats out on the water in this particular fishery. As he said, "We have a little niche."  He also commented, "Things are going quite well right now and we're catching a lot."  When she's not out sea clamming, you can find the 80' Goody Hallet in Provincetown Harbor.  Read more about Scott in this article in the Commercial Fisheries News.
Affordable Rental Opportunities on the Lower Cape
One of the primary reasons the CDP was founded was to ensure the availability of affordable homes for residents on the Lower Cape.
Thankful Chases Pathway, Harwich
Over the years we have developed 28 homes for affordable homeownership, and today manage 67 affordable rental homes at 15 properties across the Lower Cape.  Located within each town on the Lower Cape, these one, two and three bedroom rental opportunities are available for low and moderate income individuals and families. CDP Director of Property Management, Alice Demoracski guides potential residents through the application process and is available as a resource, along with her maintenance team, to individuals and families residing at the various properties.
Fred Bell Way, Wellfleet

According to Alice, "Housing opportunities change on a daily basis, and although there is currently a wait list for all of our apartments,  I encourage all interested parties to apply as the wait lists change daily."

For more information about our affordable rental opportunities, please visit our website or contact Alice at (508) 240-7873 x17.
Collaboration Supports Local Small Business Owners
SCORE We have been collaborating with Cape Cod SCORE for the past year to offer individual business counseling for small business owners right here in Eastham.  SCORE counselors are volunteer, retired and active executives who have been involved in a wide range of successful business activities, serving as business owners, CEO's, managers and business consultants.  They are dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses to start, grow and succeed.

The SCORE counselors complement the services CDP staff provides by extending the one-on-one counseling we can offer a business owner and in many cases providing significant industry specific expertise.

CDP Director of Business and Credit Programs, Sheila Hoogeboom had this to say about the relationship with SCORE, "The CDP has brought together SCORE Mentors who have run successful businesses, such as restaurants and construction companies, to offer targeted assistance to Lower Cape companies trying to overcome the same challenges. This has been invaluable to many local small businesses as they try and grow to the next level."

Upcoming dates for SCORE Sessions: Wednesday, Oct 23rd and Thursday, Nov 21st. Call Pam 508-240-7873 x18 to set up your appointment.

A safe, affordable, year-round place to live doesn't seem like too much to ask. Unfortunately, for too many of our neighbors on the Lower Cape finding a place to live is a daily struggle and too many local business owners can't find employees due to the lack of affordable housing.  For the last 20 years, the CDP has been working to help solve this challenging problem.

Sixty-seven families live in affordable rental homes owned or managed by the CDP, but the demand for year-round rental apartments far exceeds the supply.  The Town of Truro recently opened sixteen new affordable rental homes - over 60 families applied to live in them.  The story is the same in all of our communities and the CDP continues to look for opportunities to build more affordable places to live.  Unfortunately the cost and scarcity of land in our region continue to be major barriers to building more affordable housing.  But we have to do better if we wish to sustain a vibrant Lower Cape region.

Thank you for your continued support and interest in our work,

Jay - short
