Falling for Green
null
We have a lot going on this Fall with our Cape & Islands Green Program on the Lower Cape that we want share with you:

Starting on Tuesday, October 8th at 5:30 PM we'll be offering the Cape & Islands Green Level 1 Verification Workshop. The workshop will introduce participants to sustainable business practices that reduce energy costs, conserve resources and improve a business's bottom line. Representatives from the Cape Light Compact and Cape & Islands Self Reliance will also be on hand to talk about ways to reduce energy consumption, become eligible for generous financial incentives, and explore if renewable energy is right for each business.  Find out more and register today.

And on Friday, October 25th we're excited to partner with the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce to present
Cape & Islands Green
Verified Business Owners
"Green is Good for Business". At this half day event, participants will learn about new trends in sustainable tourism, take home marketing tips  for their green business and meet other Green minded business owners. Two expert guest speakers will lead the session - Robert Billington, President, CEO of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council and Director of the Sustainable Tourism Planning & Development Laboratory; and Kate Sheehan, President of Telltale Media.
Home Modification Loan Program
We're pleased to be adding an important service to our current offerings and that is the Home Modification Loan Program.  Funded through the State's Department of Health and Human Services, the program provides no- and low-interest loans to modify the homes of Wampum adults and children with disabilities, and elders.  Our own Abigail Chapman, Director of Housing and Energy Efficiency programs will  administer the program for the CDP.  According to Abigail, "This program allows for the elderly, those with disabilities, and others with need to stay in their homes, instead of having to enter long-term care facilities; giving them greater mobility, more independence and an improved quality of life." Some Kudos
We'd like to express our sincere appreciation to a few different folks for supporting our work:

Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation awarded us a $65,000 grant to support our Small Business Development Programs.

A $7,500 grant from the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation will support our Cape and Islands Green Program on the Lower Cape.

Cape Air is also supporting our Cape and Islands Green program with a $2,500 grant.

And last, but not least, Cape Associates provided construction support to include a handicap accessible bathroom in our conference room.

We couldn't do the work we do without these investments from our community and we thank them!

Norm Edinberg joined the Board of the CDP shortly after it was founded and has been a strong advocate since.  He represents the CDC on the Cape and Islands License Plate Steering Committee. He is the retired founder and president of several auto industry manufacturing companies in Venezuela where he lived for 27 years. He also designed and directed an Entrepreneurship program for the United Nations, implementing it in several countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Norm is a resident of Truro where he served on the Truro Partnership, the ZBA, the Selectmen's Advisory Committee, the Charter Re-Write Committee, the Open Space Committee and Truro Concert Committee.

When asked about is tenure on the Board, Norm commented, "In my time on the Board, the CDP has grown from a modest provider of affordable housing to a dynamic, multi-faceted force, empowering lower Cape people to contribute to their communities while supporting themselves.  It's been inspiring to be a part of that."

A Note from Jay - On Being Green

Dear Friends:

I don't know about you, but each summer seems like it is hotter and the number and severity of the storms we experience seems greater. I'm convinced that climate change is real and it's hard not to feel overwhelmed about what I, as an individual, can possibly do make a difference. However, every day I'm faced with lots of choices about what I buy, how I travel and what I consume. And which choices will have less of an impact on our planet - what is the more sustainable choice?

Fortunately, there are over  50 businesses on the Lower Cape that help make these choices easier. The CDP's Cape & Islands Green Program has provided training to business owners and verified that they take the extra steps required to maximize recycling and minimize the use of energy and other natural resources. These business owners care about the planet and their business. Money wasted on energy, water, trash disposal and materials negatively affects a business owner's bottom line.

I hope you will join me in supporting our Cape & Islands Green businesses.   And, if you know of a business that could benefit from our program, tell them about the CDP and encourage them to become Cape & Islands Green.

As always, thanks for your support and your interest,

Jay - short
