Karoo Kafe: Green and Growing
Over a decade ago we met chef/owner Sanette Groenewald as she was opening the doors to her new business, the Karoo Kafe. Located in the heart of Provincetown and featuring South African food made from scratch with only the freshest ingredients, the business model was a perfect fit with our Micro Lending Program. With an investment from us, a lot of hard work and a unique cuisine blending recipes derived from many different cultures, the establishment was off and running and quickly met with great success.A number of years later we had the opportunity to work with Sanette again, this time through our Cape and Islands Green Program. Making an investment to preserve our environment, Sanette became green verified in 2012, committing to and implementing sustainable business practice s. Now we couldn't be more pleased to welcome her as our new neighbor as she opens her second location this Spring in the Main Street Mercantile Plaza in Eastham. Simple, down to earth, unpretentious and full of friendly people is the principal on which her business was built and the reason it has thrived.

bathroom and are noticing improvements in the comfort of their home. Built in 1965, the house still had all of the original windows in place which, according to Sam, "were incredibly drafty and very loose." The new windows and doors have decreased the level of exterior noise and caused the furnace to run

less. Shortly after purchasing the house, the couple noticed a severe water leak in the upstairs bathroom which led to a complete gutting, making it unusable. Through the Housing Rehab program, they were able to restore the bathroom. Sam commented, "It is a wonderful program and has definitely put us ahead in the work that needs to be done on the house."

Out and About
We've been on the road a bit participating in some exciting events and letting folks know about the CDP. We wanted to share some of our stops with you. Our own Sheila Hoogeboom, Director of Business & Credit Programs, along with Paul Parker, Director of the Cape Cod Fisheries Trust, were invited to present to a group of State

funders and peers at an event hosted by the
Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation (MGCC). MGCC's mission is to create and support jobs within small businesses and promote economic development in communities across the state. They highlighted the work of the Cape Cod Fisheries Trust as an innovative model of economic development.
In early March, we participated in two different conferences in Maine. Pam Andersen, Business & Credit Programs Manager, shared her knowledge from work with the Cape Cod Fisheries Trust with a group at the Maine Fishermen's Forum. The talk focused on what it takes to survive as a fishing business today, highlighting the importance of versatility, forward thinking, and

technological savvy.
The following week Sheila and Pam presented at a national conference in Portland, Maine. Hosted by the Community Fisheries Network (CFN), of which we are a member, the purpose of the gathering was to share best practices with community-based fishing organizations from across the country. The group's goal is to increase the long-term sustainability of commercial fishing communities by building business-planning acumen, the strength of fishing stocks and marine ecosystems, social networks, economic resilience, and the ability to expand markets through effective storytelling.

A Note from Jay
Being able to walk the dogs in day light when I get home from work at the CDP is a sure sign that the busy summer season will be here in no time at all. One of my favorite parts of Spring is discovering new businesses opening for their first season.
In this issue we feature a true CDP success story, Sanette Groenewald and her new Eastham restaurant Karoo. Sanette is an incredibly talented chef who worked with me fifteen years ago when I opened my restaurant in Provincetown. One of the most rewarding parts of leading the CDP is seeing all of the great businesses thriving in our community thanks to the hard work of their founders and an investment by the CDP.
We are very excited to welcome Sanette and her team as our new neighbor and announce that we will hold the CDP's 22nd Annual Meeting at Karoo Restaurant during the last week in April. Details about the Annual Meeting will be available soon, but count on a great program and the opportunity to support a growing business. At the Annual Meeting we will elect several new Board Members and report on our work over the past year, creating and preserving affordable housing and supporting sustainable economic development on the Lower Cape.
Thanks again for all you do to support our vital work.
