1958 Woman with Brooklyn Skyline - Noel Davis

1958 Girl in Bed - Noel Davis
|
It was just before Noel Davis leaves New York for his first New Orleans visit and name change to Rockmore. It was given to an illustrator, William A. Smith, as a gift from Noel Davis. It turns out Smith was a contemporary of Noel's father, the famous illustrator Floyd Davis. We went through the Rockmore archives and found an image of the girl sick in bed that Joseph Hirshhorn had bought directly from Rockmore. It was certainly the same girl but why would Hirshhorn not buy the magnificent portrait and who was the girl and why is she so sad? We then found an image from a David Lattimore Picture in the photo archive and discovered the same girl standing next to the portrait. David Lattimore was Rockmore's Putney High School close friend and confidant through his marriage & kids and eventual divorce and departure from Brooklyn in 1959.

1959 The subject by the Portrait
|
We called David and found out that it was David's first wife in the portraits and she had posed for Noel while they were neighbors in Brooklyn Heights. She had just had 6 children, including twins, in seven years and was certainly a little overwhelmed and a great accessible subject for Rockmore. She was comfortable with Rockmore who was going to capture her exactly as she was on that day. What a great story to go with this great painting. * Note - There is a very small puncture on the sleeve of the figure and the support and medium are stable and in good condition. Greetings!
Happy Holidays!
We made it to Georgia by car from Cape Cod to pick up some artwork and we are headed to Louisiana to find our new place to live and pick up Shirley Marvin for our out WESTERN Rockmore Adventure. We will drive to Albuquerque this weekend to see the Finley's Rockmores, they are longtime collectors with Rockmores that have not been seen in 35 years. We will also see and interview Andrea Lannin (Rockmore's girlfriend 75-78) an artist in Alburquerque. Then it is on to Tucson to interview F. Peter Rose (Rockmore friend & housemate 67-77). Finally to the Huntington Museum Library in Los Angeles on Friday December 14th to meet with the Head Curator & local collectors about a Potential Rockmore Show. That would really be HUGE in the biggest known Art Mecca that has approached us to date. We will then drive back to Louisiana drop off Shirley, visit our older kids and head back to Cape Cod in time to see our younger kids on winter break. We will move to New Orleans on January 15th to start the Golden Era of the French Quarter Foundation and help with the Louisiana Arts & Science Rockmore Exhibition which will be coming up next summer 2013! Total excitement and nervous anticipation about everything, change is GOOD!
