Gig Harborites are very active, and we are lucky to have several options for places to work out - many people enjoy the beautiful YMCA, which is about to undergo an expansion.
But some people are looking for something a little different in a work out. Yoga studios, Jazzercize, personal trainers and boot camps are also popular around Gig Harbor. But one of Gig Harbor's hidden secrets is Gateway Fitness located near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
Gateway Fitness offers a very different experience than the YMCA. If you are looking for a club with all the equipment and classes, without lots of kids in the locker room or on the equipment, then Gateway Fitness might be for you. For those who live in the south end of Gig Harbor or in Fox Island, Artondale, Point Fosdick, Eastbay or Reid Road, you might find Gateway a perfect fit for you too.
I had a tour of Gateway Fitness this week and was really surprised. Just a beautiful facility and it even
has a view! You can enjoy a first class cardio room with so many machines there is never a line, while gazing at Mt. Rainier and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Greetings!
You may have heard that I have announced my retirement, coming up in late June. This is something I have been looking forward to for several years, and I am excited to embark on something new and exciting for me. I'm calling it "Act II"
I am also really excited to share with you the news that my replacement will be Karen Scott. Karen will assume the duties of City of Gig Harbor Marketing Director during the month of May. She and I will spend a month together training before my departure. Karen is no stranger to the marketing efforts of Gig Harbor, having spent 8 years as my assistant. Karen is a highly capable individual as well as a very dear friend. She will be incredible. Please give her your full support as you have given me all these years.
It's an exciting time. I am very optimistic for our community and its future. Gig Harbor has so much positive energy and amazing things going on. For me there is just too much to look forward to, to not find something to be positive about. Don't believe me? Well just read this month's Gig-a-Byte and you will be a believer!
Sincerely,
Laureen Lund City of Gig Harbor

Everywhere we go in Gig Harbor there seems to be new development of both commercial and residential. It's easy to think we are paving paradise but, look a little closer.
We have awesome parks - not just the ones you see from your car or attend events and festivals at. We have some amazing hidden gems waiting for discovery.
Like the brand new 97 acre dog park - still waiting for a name.
PenMet Park's newest park is located across the street from the 122 acre McCormick Forest Park, next door to Fire District 5 on Bujacich Road. The site is being leased from the Peninsula School District and as is the newest addition to PenMet Parks variety of parks property around the area.
The parcel has had trails on it for a long time (and still does) but now also includes a fenced in off-leash dog park. Parking is available at the Fire District (look for the signs) and a porta-potty was being installed the day I was there.
Rotary has been a big helper in getting this project done. A little more work over the next few weeks to grade and seed the area that will be a meadow for Frisbee and doggie social time and then the park will be complete. Read More... |

GIG HARBOR - IMAGES OF AMERCIA |
Gig Harbor has hit the big time with the production of a new book as part of the Images of America series produced by Arcadia Publishing out of South Carolina.
You will no doubt recognize this style of book. Arcadia publishes historic pictorial books around the country.
I really enjoyed looking through the book which features more than 200 vintage images and memories of Gig Harbor's past.
From Native Americans, the Wilkes Expedition, early settlers, fishing, logging and agriculture to the Narrows Bridge, early commerce and the players who built the community, the book covers it.
Locals will be recognize many iconic locations as well as local characters, many still living and active in the community today.
The book is really fun and should be on every coffee table in Gig Harbor. It's a great conversation piece and also a great gift. I think visitors will enjoy it as a souvenir.
Gig Harbor, $21.99, Arcadia Publishing. Available at local retailers, online bookstores, or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com |
