Newark Public Schools Chris Cerf, State District Superintendent of the State-Operated School District of the City of Newark, provided the State Board with a monthly update regarding district operations. Anti-Bullying Task Force Update
Anti-Bullying Task Force Chairperson Patricia Wright, NJPSA Executive Director, presented an update regarding the Final Report of Anti-Bullying Task Force. The report was released in early February. Future Ready Schools NJ
Education Commissioner David C. Hespe announced a new program designed to help New Jersey school districts identify and meet their needs for digital learning. NJDOE will partner with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) to develop the "Future Ready Schools-New Jersey" recognition program. Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Overview
NJDOE Deputy Commissioner & Deputy Chief Talent and Performance Office Peter Shulman & Jill Hulnick informed the State Board of the basics of ESSA, a history of the federal law and expected timelines for changes. They also discussed the impacts on 2016-17 and NJDOE's next steps. It is anticipated the new state plan will go into effect for the 2017-18 school year. Managing for Equality & Equity in Education - Division of Legal and External Affairs N.J.A.C. 6A:7
The State Board of Education readopted N.J.A.C. 6A:7, Managing for Equality and Equity in Education, with amendments. The chapter provides standards governing equality in educational programs to guarantee each student equal access to all educational programs, services, and benefits of the school district regardless of his or her race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender, religion, disability, or socioeconomic status. The rules also provide an objective basis for evaluating a school district's progress toward equality in educational programs, and provide the basis for district boards of education to identify areas in which technical assistance may be needed. The rules directly impact students by affirming their basic rights to equitable treatment and services and to a quality education. T he State Board readopted without amendments of the School Ethics regulations proposed at N.J.A.C. 6A:28, School Ethics Commission, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:4-15 and 18A:12-34. Adoption Resolution Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission Name Change RequestThe State Board adopted the Commissioner's recommendation pertaining to the request for a name change, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:6-61. Discussion Resolution Religious Holidays Calendar - Division of Field Services The State Board discussed the resolution pertaining to the annual calendar of religious holidays for the 2016-2017 school year as established at N.J.A.C. 6A:32-8.3(j), pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:36-14-16.
