Love cheddar? Join our team!

We're looking for a full-time, seasonal cheesemaking and processing assistant

At the White House

This month, our cheddar was included in a New England Culinary Institute class on Sustainable Food Practices at the White House. NECI Chef Joey Buttendorf presented and led a tasting of a few Vermont cheeses -- ours, Jasper Hill, Vermont Creamery -- to 300 people, including all the White House cooks and the Executive Pastry Chef.

"My vision for farm-based education..."

This July, we've been asking members of the Farm-Based Education Network for their visions for this movement. Here's one: "...to do away with long hours in school desks. To foster nature and food connection amongst our youth. To create a sustainable future."

What We're Reading

I love asking big questions to a buoyant brood of summer campers. What fills you up? What nourishes you? Who needs who? By exploring these questions, our campers are connecting with the big ideas of sustainability.

This August 3-9, you can do the same, when 85 Vermont farms and markets open their doors to the public as part of Vermont Open Farm Week. As Coordinator of the Farm-Based Education Network, I jumped at the chance to help organize this event, and am inspired by the many farmers who will be teaching visitors about agriculture, and strengthening Vermont's agritourism industry.

I hope your August is filled with farm fresh food and time to ponder what nourishes you, starting with the Vermont Fresh Network Forum on August 2, and continuing into Open Farm Week. Check out our events, or DiginVT's complete listing of Vermont events.

Meet a Cheesemonger

Saturday, August 8 | Welcome Center

Join our resident cheesemonger Rory Stamp next Saturday to sample a selection of our raw milk cheddar. He'll craft delicious pairings and plates, and our cheesemakers will stop by throughout the day to chat with you. It's part of Open Farm Week! You can also Read Rory's blog about the Cheese Fest.

We're off to
American Cheese Society

Our cheese team heads to Rhode Island this week for this annual conference and competition. "It's nice that this year's event is on the East Coast." says Rory Stamp, "It will be a real celebration of New England -- and Vermont -- cheesemaking." We sent an almost four-year-old cheddar for the farmstead cheese judging. Fingers crossed!

Educators on the Farm

Our summer of welcoming educators to learn, grow, and be inspired, is still going strong! This week, we're hosting 29 educators at our Summer Institute on Education for Sustainability. How vital are such summer opportunities for teachers? Find out in this ASCD blog by classroom teacher (and our curriculum coordinator), Emily Hoyler.

Words from a Member

About 8 years ago, our granddaughter visited the farm and told us it was a "beautiful castle in the woods." We had to agree.

Since then, we have both become increasingly involved here. We've fed orphan lambs in winter, Sue volunteered in the market garden and has been a regular tour guide for 7 years (so far). John volunteers at Winterfest, and helps wind the clocks. We have benefitted from various courses, and we have always loved the Inn.

As our involvement has increased and evolved, so has our appreciation for the Farm. At first captivated by its beauty and by the "peaceful, easy feeling" that comes with each visit, we have grown more aware of the deep importance and impact of the organization's mission of sustainability. We are true believers. And we look forward enthusiastically to sustaining our support! Read full article
