At DPL We
♥
Our Volunteers
Volunteers enrich our library in many ways. They bring enthusiasm, talent, and fresh perspectives to everything they do. Plus, their hours of volunteer service represent not only a tremendous monetary value to our libraries, but an immeasurable value in service to our local communities. Would you like to join our awesome group of volunteers? If you can spare an hour or two a week, we'd love to have you. You can apply online here
Writers, Readers Come Together at DPL
Did you know that we host dozens of literary programs each year that are ideal for Central Oregon's vigorous writing community
- We're now taking applications for our Local Author Fair, which gives local writers a chance to share their work with the public.
- Monthly writing workshops, such as the upcoming "The Warehouse of Voices within You," explore a variety of genres, including memoir, food writing, travel writing and poetry.
- Author! Author! gives writers a chance to hear about the craft of writing and creation from nationally known and prize-winning authors.
- Second Sunday offers local writers the opportunity to learn from regionally recognized writers from across genres.
- A monthly Teen Writing Group provides young writers the space to explore their creativity and practice the art being a part of a writers group.
DPL Librarian Heather McNeil Named to Caldecott Committee
The annual Caldecott Medal recognizes the preceding year's most distinguished American picture book for children. It's awarded to the illustrator by the Association for Library Service to Children, and we're proud to announce that one of our librarians, Heather McNeil, has been appointed to the 2018 Caldecott Committee. The Caldecott and Newbery Medals are the most prestigious American children's book awards. McNeil also served on the Newbery Medal Selection Committee in 2005.
Enjoy Music from the Oregon Guitar Trio
Catch the Oregon Guitar Trio, a newly formed group consisting of members Matthew Gwinup, David Kelley, and David Rogers. The Trio plays chamber music from ancient times to modern, including original works and arrangements of popular tunes. Catch them at the Sunriver Library at 2:00 on June 4, and at the Downtown Bend Library at 2:00 on June 5.
Great Partners Help Build Great Communities
Deschutes Public Library recently received a great honor as Head Start staff from across Deschutes County voted to name us their "Community Partner of the Year." DPL staff members Jo, Julie, Gaby, Heather, and Roxanne work closely with Head Start, making classroom visits and supporting child and family literacy in a variety of ways. Thank you, Head Start! We're proud to partner with you.
