February Brings Authors to Central Oregon
Best-selling author Lisa See joins us for Author! Author! on February 25. In addition to her award-winning books, such as Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, See has also written for magazines including Vogue and Self, and wrote a libretto for the opera based on her book On Gold Mountain: The 100 Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American FamilyTickets are $25 for general admission seating, and $75 for premium seating and a private reception with See.

Also coming to Central Oregon in February: novelist and essayist Laila LalamiDeschutes Public Library Foundation partners with the Oregon Humanities (OH) to bring Lalami to Bend for OH's Think & Drink Pulitzer Prize series. She'll address topics such as being Muslim in America when she appears in conversation with artist and poet MOsley WOtta on February 17 at Volcanic Theatre Pub; tickets ($9.75) are available here
Building Common Ground: How Stereotypes Affect Us
Where do stereotypes come from and why do we use them? How do they keep us from engaging with each other? Explore the idea of stereotyping through the book Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us over a four-week period in February. We begin this community discussion on February 1 at the Redmond Library; it continues on Feb. 8, 16 and 22. Register here and join the discussion.
Did You Know?...
Did you know that we now house the Deschutes County Law LibraryPreviously accessible to the public for just 25 hours during the week and only at the county's offices in downtown Bend, the Law Library is now available 56 hours each week through Deschutes Public Library. This means that attorneys, amateur legal scholars and the general public can now access print and online databases at more convenient times and at multiple locations. A great way to start using the Law Library is to use our Book-a-Librarian service.
Free Tax Help at the Library
Get a jump-start on your taxes with free help from the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program and the United Way of Deschutes County. They're offering free tax preparation sessions for Central Oregonians at the Downtown Bend Library. Learn more about tax credits and have an IRS-Certified Volunteer prepare your taxes. Walk-in sessions begin Feb. 6; click here for times and additional information.
