Spooky Book Recommendations for October
It's October, our favorite month to curl up with a spooky book or two. We asked DPL staff members to share some of their favorite scary books and we received spooktacular recommendations. Check them out here on our website (if you dare). We also have Slightly Spooky & Silly storytimes for the whole family in October. Look for those storytimes at the Redmond Library (10/13), La Pine Library (10/20) and East Bend Library (10/29).
Music & Words: James McBride &
the Good Lord Bird Band
Join us for a special event with National Book Award-winning author and jazz musician James McBride (Nov. 8, 4:00 p.m. at Bend High School; tickets available online). He'll discuss his books, which include "The Color of Water" and "The Good Lord Bird," and perform with his Good Lord Bird Band. Get to know James McBride with this short video, then buy your ticket for this evening of music and words. Tickets sales benefit library programs and services.
A Different Storytime: Get on the Bus with Us!
Enjoy stories, songs and fun with buses, and explore a real CET bus! Join us for a bus-themed storytime, followed by an opportunity to get on and explore a real (parked) CET bus. Join in the fun on Monday, October 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the Downtown Bend Library, and Thursday, October 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the La Pine Library. These events are ideal for kids of all ages and their caregivers.
An Afternoon with Edgar Allan Poe
This event guarantees a chilling, informative, and fun-filled glimpse into the strange and intriguing realm of the life and works of America's premier master of the macabre and literary bad boy, Edgar Allan Poe. This award-winning one-person show will showcase dramatic recitations of some of Poe's best-loved works along with informative sidelights into Poe's life and times. Free and open to the public; 10/25 (D. Bend).
College Planning for ALL Ages
Deschutes Public Library presents You U, a free series of monthly programs for college-bound students or those who are simply "college curious," regardless of age. You U covers topics such as figuring out your major, making college work for your schedule, test taking and interviewing skills, financing your education, and student life. You'll find the full schedule of programs here.
"Know Out West" Throughout October
The idea of The West has held sway over our collective imagination since American author Horace Greely first uttered "Go West young man." But how does that idea, ripe with stereotypes, larger-than-life-characters and mythic adventures, square with reality? This month we take a closer look at the West. Join us for programs about the early peoples of the High Desert, how art can romanticize the West, and what the work of photographer Edward Curtis means to Native Americans today. You'll find times, dates & locations here.
A Visit from Author Timothy Egan
Award-winning author and journalist Timothy Egan is a DPL fan! Egan spoke in Bend on October 1 as part of the Author! Author! literary series. Up next in the series: Elizabeth Gilbert ("Eat Pray Love") on November 13. Get tickets here.
