What's All the Hoopla About? Free Movies!
You've heard of Netflix, but have you heard of hoopla? It's your library's FREE digital streaming service that gives you access to thousands of movies and television shows, all available for mobile and online access. Download the free hoopla digital mobile app on your Android or IOS device or visit our website to begin enjoying thousands of titles--from major Hollywood studios--available to borrow for instant streaming or temporary downloading to your smartphone, tablet or computer. You can browse films by genre, such as family, or by era, such as '80s classics. You'll also find documentaries, award winners and more. All you need to begin using hoopla is your library card number and your PIN (typically the last four digits of your phone number). You can then stream or download up to 12 movies or television shows every month. And if you need help, just ask!
Thank You, Friends!
The Friends of the Bend Libraries recently presented the Deschutes Public Library Board of Directors with a generous $30,000 contribution--$22,000 is designated to go toward books, movies and music, and $8,000 will be used to enhance youth initiatives, such as early literacy. The Friends of the Sisters Library also gave a much-appreciated $14,000 contribution to the Library district. The Sisters donation sends $9,000 toward books, movies and music; $2,500 to the summer reading program; and $2,500 to the A Novel Idea community read program. Thanks to our Friends for all you do!
Art Now on Display at Your Libraries
At Deschutes Public Library, wall space is turned into public galleries where people can view the work of amateur and professional artists who work in a variety of mediums. Visit the Downtown Bend, Redmond, Sisters and Sunriver Libraries this summer to view the work of talented local artists. You'll find more information here about the art on display. Art displays rotate throughout the year, so visit often!
Call for Local Authors
Are you a Deschutes County writer? Would you like the opportunity to share your work with the community? On August 16 the Downtown Bend Library hosts the Local Author Fair. We have space for up to a dozen local authors to bring in their books and share their work in a book fair-type environment. Applications are due by July 31. You must live in Deschutes County and have books for sale (either self-published or from a publisher). Preference will be given to authors who did not participate in last year's Local Author event, but those individuals will be considered as space allows. If interested, send an email to tinad@deschuteslibrary.org for an application.
