Deschutes Public Library "In the Know" Newsletter
Happy New Year! ~ January 7, 2015
Join Us for Appy Hour!
No, that's not a typo. It's Appy Hour, where you can learn how to put your smart phone or tablet to better use by exploring free apps and digital services. Whether you received a new digital device as a gift, or want to make the most of one you've had, this is the place to be. This month's Appy Hour is on January 21 from 4:30-5:30 at McMenamin's Old St. Francis School, and we'll feature Hoopla, the library's free movie streaming service. But you can bring your questions about any of your library apps. Light snacks will be provided and beverages will be available for sale. We hope to see you there!
DPL's Mock Caldecott 2015
Every year the American Library Association awards the Caldecott Medal to the children's book with the most distinguished illustrations. We have seven books that we think should be considered. Want to vote for your favorite? Join us as for the Mock Caldecott! Take part in the discussion and vote for your favorite here. We'll announce the winner in an upcoming newsletter.
Know More About 3D Printing
How do 3D printers work? What can you make with them? Explore this cool tech tool and learn more about the High Desert Maker Mill at two 3D Printing & Scanning Showcases in January:
Author! Author!: Garth Stein
Enjoy an evening with author Garth Stein while supporting Deschutes Public Library programs and services. The author of The Art of Racing in the Rain will present on February 11 at Bend High School, and tickets are still available. General admission is only $20. Preferred admission gets you a seat near the front as well as entrance to an exclusive meet-and-greet with Stein before the event.
Making Sense of American Constitutionalism: A Four-Part Series
Author, constitutional scholar and OSU-Cascades Professor James Foster leads a four-part series of readings and discussions designed to encourage civic engagement while giving participants the opportunity to discuss difficult or sensitive topics. This series was a great success in Bend, and is now offered at the Redmond Library over four sessions between January 31 and March 14. Registration is required and space is limited; visit this page to register or to find more information.
