From the President
Dear Friends and Families of Northwoods,
Can you believe it's already December 9th! Today the Church is celebrating the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, as yesterday was the 2nd Sunday of Advent. Mary is a beautiful example of someone who says "yes" to God. How much he will do in us, if we are open to his graces. This is my prayer for you throughout the next few weeks: That God will shower His blessings upon each of us. More Event Photos HERE We've accomplished the first stage of our playground renovation. Fr. Michael Vanderbeek, LC led the charge of the installation of specialized stainless steel grates which were set over the drains. Previously, the drains were covered with a mat that prevents weeds from growing in the wood chips, but unfortunately, wouldn't allow water to drain quickly. Soon, we will install fresh playground wood chips. We have reached $70,000 in our Annual Fund! This is fantastic news all made possible because of YOUR GENEROSITY! Thank you! Thank you!! Finally, the Gala isn't far way. Spread the word and buy a table! Your support makes all the difference!! |
God Bless,
Fr. Scott Reilly, LC Northwoods Catholic School |
 A Letter from the Principal
Dear Friends and Families of Northwoods,
As I have mentioned in previous communications, excellence in academics is paramount to the entire staff at Northwoods. Our students are continuously challenged to work to their full potential and to stretch their thought processes and imaginations. We are fortunate to be able to offer innovative learning opportunities in all subject areas. Last week, for example, our seventh grade students had the opportunity to participate in a national program sponsored by the American Physiological Association, Physiology PhUn Week. Students joined in interactive, hands-on activities to increase interest and understanding of physiology in their lives. Through this real-life, face-to-face encounter with practicing bio-medical researchers, students learned about how their bodies function and how scientific discoveries are made. For details on the program, click here.

This Month's Mass Celebrations
Every Tues, Wed, & Thurs / Mass at 7:25 am - Chapel
Every Friday / All Schools Mass at 8 :30 am - Commons
Month of December ~ Class Mass Celebrations
Dec. 16, 2013 / Kindergarten Girls Class Mass at 8:30 am - Chapel
Dear NCS Families,
It is no secret we have many generous parents at our school who volunteer countless hours and bring to our school such a beautiful family spirit. Without you our school could never function. But what is less commonly known is the fact that we have students who volunteer their time every day to make sure our daily Mass is prepared in the way our Lord deserves. I want to take this opportunity to thank these students by name. A special thank you to Dominic Engbarth for arriving early with his mom and having the chapel set up perfectly even before I arrive at 7:10am! Thank you to Cyprus Kananen for assisting Dominic and to the both of them for being model altar servers.
And a big thank you to Vienna Kananen, Brooklynn Torres, Juanita Boada, and Siena Nicholson for glorifying God with their beautiful voices. It impresses me so much that they have stepped out of their comfort zones to put their talents to use in our Lord's service.
A spiritual "high five" to all of these students for giving our Lord the best of their time and talents! Thank you very much!
In Christ Jesus,
Fr. Michael Vanderbeek, LC

Q & A with Mr. Q
Fellow parents,
Below is a link to a valuable parent resource that many parents at the school have found helpful. It allows you to see why movies are rated the way they are so you can make informed decisions about what enters the eye and ear gates of your child. Media choices kids watch like movies, books, games, or other activities that might be on your Christmas activities list. Just type the name of a book movie or game into the search bar and get wonderful brief parent notes on the stuff out kids are exposed. Ya, there's an app for that too...search the appstore for "kids media."

Seventh Grade Welcomes A New Member To The Class
All NCS students are thrilled to welcome a life-size skeleton to the Science Lab. The entire school worked towards raising the money needed by participating in a Penny Bomb and purchasing Arbonne's health and wellness products. The first priority is deciding on his name! Mrs. Bonetati is allowing her current seventh graders to choose a name as the curriculum for that grade level is Life Science. Students at all grade levels will be able to use the skeleton in their science classes. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible!

ADVENT BY CANDLELIGHT 2013
A big thank you to all our moms and friends who prepared the Advent by Candlelight! We had a beautiful evening of friendship, potluck and enjoyed encouraging words of speaker, Katie Hartfiel, who spoke to all about the gift of Motherhood and live this Advent close to our Mother Mary.
Special thanks to our Advent by Candlelight Committee:
Sisi Ibrahim, Ana Lamuņo, Kelly Harrison, Susan Killman, Mirlene Abdallah, Mayte Herranz, Nelli Prado, Karen Anzziani
as well as all those moms who showed up to decorate and transform our Commons into a candlelit Bethlehem!
Our night was complete with caroling with Mrs. Vicky Ireland & Ms. Julia Clancy, and the performance of our Christmas choir!
Some of our current and alumni moms who joined us!
