Finalists selected in EoY competition

AROOSTOOK COUNTY - From a field of 16 nominees, five finalists have been selected for the 2014 Aroostook Entrepreneur of the Year award sponsored by LEADers Encouraging Aroostook Development, Momentum Aroostook, University of Maine Fort Kent, Northern Maine Community College, University of Maine Presque Isle and Husson University.

The finalists will be honored and a winner announced at an awards dinner Thursday, May 22, at Northern Maine Community College.

"We had several outstanding nominations and the selection committee did a good job getting it down to the five finalists," said LEAD Executive Director Ryan Pelletier. "The theme for this year's competition was 'Resources - The Idea Starts Here' and the finalists showed if you have a good idea and run with it, good things can happen."

"This year's recognition, representing the largest number of nominees since the inception of the award in 2009 makes the statement that entrepreneurship is alive in Aroostook County," said LEAD President Jim Davis. "The County provides the type of environment and support (as evidenced by programs at NMCC and elsewhere) needed by people of all ages who have an idea for bringing a product or service to the marketplace. LEAD is proud to be a co-sponsor of this annual competition and awards for those who truly are making economic development happen."

The finalists are, in alphabetical order of business, Cam Manufacturing in Presque Isle, owners Marc Brown and Mark Jones; Mike's Family Market (Limestone) and Mike's Quick Stop (Caribou), owner Michael Cyr; Northern Prosthetics in Presque Isle, owner Cory LaPlante; Northern Turf  Management in Van Buren; owner Patrick Vaillancourt; and Valley Motors/Pelletier Ford in Fort Kent, owner Steven Pelletier.

"We are very pleased to participate and host this important event which celebrates Aroostook's entrepreneurial spirit," said NMCC President Tim Crowley. "It's fitting that this occasion takes place on our campus where entrepreneurship is taught in our business program and students have the opportunity to explore the trades which lead to very successful professional lives."

The nominees, finalists and winner will be celebrated May 22 at the Edmunds Conference Center at Northern Maine Community College. The Aroostook Entrepreneur of the Year dinner will feature local produce, products and highlight the cultural diversity of the region. There will also be a vegetarian option. The price per person is $35. Pre-registration is required by 4 p.m. May 16. To register, contact Judy Dinsmore at Northern Maine Development Commission, 498-8736 or by email, jdinsmore@nmdc.org.

Busy month of May for APP working groups

AROOSTOOK COUNTY - May is shaping up to be a busy month for Aroostook Partnership for Progress (APP) working groups.

The different working groups, comprised of subject matter experts, were formed to help achieve the goals outlined in the Mobilize Northern Maine initiative.

"We have built super networks in our five working groups," said APP President Bob Dorsey.

Mobilize Northern Maine is an asset based strategic planning effort being utilized by APP to help focus economic development efforts.

The renewable energy working group will meet May 15. On the agenda is an energy trends review as well as wind, solar and biomass updates and next steps.

The "Education to Industry" working group, made up of educators, human resources and workforce development officials and others, meets May 28. Dorsey said the purpose of the meeting is to discuss approaches to expand school participation in Job Shadow programs, solicit input on the implementation of "Opportunities Aroostook" that looks to grow the 18- to 44-year-old workforce of the region, an update on the Aroostook Aspirations Initiative, and to address the potential for a follow on to last year's Education to Industry Summit.

Dorsey said the forestry working group will meet this month to continue to define actions needed to achieve the objectives outlined in the group's "Guiding Document," but a date and time has yet to be set. He added previous work done by the forestry working group was instrumental in developing an application to the federal government to be designated a "manufacturing community," which may lead to grants and other funds to grow the forest products industry in Aroostook.

Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP) is a federal program designed to accelerate the resurgence of manufacturing and create jobs across the country.

Northern Maine Development Commission (NMDC) was awarded funding in the initial phase of the IMCP process last year to explore attracting a biomass boiler manufacturer to the region and now phase two efforts are underway with the filing of the designation application last month.

According to Dorsey, "these working groups are the essence of the Mobilize Northern Maine effort - these groups with an abundance of expertise from both the private and public sectors, the networking that occurs, and the ideas, objectives and strategies that emerge from them form the basis and logic essential for accessing federal dollars needed to enhance Aroostook's growing economy."
