"Courtesy Room" Activity in
St. Mary's Emergency Department

Recently, there have been a few instances where a non-Emergency Department physician has met a private patient at the Emergency Department at St. Mary's Medical Center (SMMC) to provide care without the patient receiving an appropriate medical screening examination or being properly registered within the Emergency Department. In these instances, the physician has utilized a room within the Emergency Department in a capacity, which in the past, has been referred to as a "courtesy room." Dr. Vernon Maas, St. Mary's Medical Center's Vice President of Medical Affairs, discusses Medical Center policy regarding this activity.
