GM REPORT

Dear TPC Members,

We had great fun at the TPC last Friday! Tennis Director, Brendan Curry ran a fun round robin, Kirsten Frazer operated the Wibits and Jameson Miller was on the BBQ! We had a very good turnout for both events and have another one being planned for August!

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS

  1. Starting today, we plan on replacing the wood retaining walls and stairs on courts #2 and #5 with concrete. This work will take most of the week and courts will be limited at times and will have noise during the day.
  2. The following week, we will resurface Courts #1-2-4-5-6. Court #3 and the upper walkway will be addressed at the conclusion of the Challenger. All six courts will be down during the week. During the day 2 courts will be available for member play down below and 4 courts will be available after 5 PM. We should be back to 12 courts by the weekend of August 6-7.
  3. New water coolers are planned for the upper six tennis courts, you can see our new water coolers in the Fitness room and by the entrance to the Locker room. When site utilities are added to the lower court, the new water coolers will be installed there as well.
  4. We have added a new restroom facility for the lower courts and cleaning service has been increased.
  5. Member's comments are encouraged and welcomed! Please email your ideas to us at TPCMaintenance@tiburonpc.org.

TRANS-TAHOE RELAY

The TPC had two teams

affiliated with our Master's Swimming Program in the Trans-Tahoe Relay on Saturday, July 16, 2016. It was the third year participating for Los Tiburones Locos and the Sharks with Laser Beams swam for their second year in a row.

This year's moto...GO BIG OR GO HOME!!! Los Tiburones Locos took the plunge into the chilly waters, colder this year (great ski season means colder waters for the swim), battling numb fingers and toes in the beginning of the race. Leading off for the Locos, Colin Murray fought hard through the chaos of the start setting the Locos up with a solid start to the 11 mile race across Lake Tahoe.

Second to enter the water for the Locos was Greg Dorn. Straight as an arrow Greg set his line and propelled through the water, seemingly effortlessly picking off swimmers ahead of the Locos. Tom Pier, an open water swimmer, would hit the water third. Unfazed by cold water he powered through his 30 minutes. Fourth in the water for the Locos was Jeff Harband, working hard and maintaining a steady forward progression. Rick Sichel hit the waters in the fifth position. Determined to take down the swimmers just ahead of us, he set his sights and started chipping away.

Four hours into the race, what was perfect race weather turned. The winds picked up and the water became a choppy mess on waves, boats and swimmers battling to get to the finish. The final stretch to the finish line should have taken about 20-30 minutes, but in the swimming treadmill that the water had become it took about an hour to finish the race. Los Tiburones Locos finished the race in 5:03:54, 12th in their age group and 126th overall.

The Sharks with Laser Beams battled the rough waters in the end to finish when many teams were giving up and pulling out. An extraordinary effort by the Sharks with Laser Beams, Ben & Elizabeth Kilgore, David & Camille Jampolsky, and Peter Winkler to finish in 6:16:26, 8th in their age group and 198th overall.

$100,000 WELLS FARGO TIBURON CHALLENGER

The Tiburon Challenger, remains one of only six $100,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challengers in the country and it's right around the corner. There are no easy victories on the professional tour and these guys sure do put on a show for us during what we call the highlight of tennis in the Bay Area.

Once again we are fortunate to be able to host this wonderful event at our club. Tournament dates are September 24th - October 2nd.

Box seat sponsorships still available! Please visit http://tiburonchallenger.com/ or contact Brendan at brendanc@tiburonpc.org for more information

Let's take a look at previous Tiburon Challenger Champions and what they have been up to....

2015 SINGLES CHAMPION - TIM SMYCZEK

Tim is now ranked 120 in the world. With a career high singles ranking of No.68 he will be looking to have a strong second half of 2016.

2014 SINGLES CHAMPION - SAM QUERREY

Sam beat Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon 2016 en route to the quarter finals, his best Grand Slam performance to date. Sam's ATP singles ranking is now No.29, twelve spots shy of his career high of No.17 in 2011.

2013 SINGLES CHAMPION - PETER POLANSKY

Peter is once again climbing the rankings after overcoming injuries in the past two years. This year he has won three Futures events, two in Canada and one in Florida and made another final also in Canada. The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells this year saw him win three matches to qualify and lose a close first round to Fernando Verdasco in the first round. It's great to see Peter healthy again and making a run at the top 100 players in the world.

2012 SINGLES CHAMPION - JACK SOCK

Jack is the 2014 Wimbledon Doubles Champion with partner Vasek Pospisil and is now ranked No.26 in the ATP World Tour Singles Rankings. With a career high of No.22 in January of this year he will be looking to step things up in the second half of 2016. Jack just had a great singles win against Marin Cilic in the Davis Cup tie vs Croatia in Portland, Oregon. Sock and Pospisil also racked up a great title winning the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells in 2015.

2011 SINGLES CHAMPION - IVO KARLOVIC

6'11" Ivo is fresh off another singles title in Newport, an ATP 250 event, and one of his seven career singles titles. At 37 years of age he is now ranked No.35 in the ATP Tour World Rankings and is looking to close in on his career high of No.14 in 2008.

TIBURON CHALLENGER DOUBLES

We have seen many amazing doubles teams come through and play our tournament over the past nine years that we've had the Challenger. With the doubles format as it is now, playing no-ad scoring and a super tie break for the third set, the matches are quick and exciting and anyone team can win on a good day.

GROSSMAN CLOSING IN ON WORLD #1 RANKING

Dan and Polo won the ITF Grade A Barcelona Senior Championships Men's 50+ Doubles title held at Real Club de Polo de Barcelona winning the championship match 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in the tie breaker. The win in Barcelona places Dan at No.2 in the World Ranking in the Men's Doubles 60+ with the potential of becoming No.1 if they win this week's tournament (6th ITF Seniors Primrose Bordeaux) in which they will be participating in the Men's 35+ and 45+. Unfortunately, they will not be offering Men's 50+ Doubles. It'll be a real test given both the younger age groups will include a few recent former touring pros.

The ITF awards points to the players respective age group, no matter what age group they play. Polo is currently ranked World No.1 in the Men's 50 Doubles.

Congratulations to Dan and Polo!

PERALTA and ZEBALLOS PERFECT RECORD IN FINALS

Julio Peralta, coached by TPC's Dan Grossman, continued his winning streak with partner Zeballos in Gstaad, Switzerland last week. The pair took home the title at the $250,000 ATP Tour event, their second on the Tour this year, keeping their unbeaten record alive beating top seeds Mate Pavic of Croatia and New Zealand's Michael Venus 7/6(2) 6/2. Pavic and Venus have won four ATP Tour doubles titles so far in 2016 which just adds to the impressiveness of this victory.

Congratulations Julio and Horacio!
